Brief discussion on 5 Live just now between Clive Myrie and Colin Patterson about the effect of the Brits having a gender neutral Artist of the Year award to be inclusive to NB. Although they obviously stayed on the fence ('hot potato' 'complex') the point was raised that it could be seen as a step backwards for representation for women. Myrie also highlighted the reason why there is a female category in this and many other awards shortlists. Patterson thought that the issue would be raised a lot in red carpet interviews so could be worth looking out for later.

Look at the winners of the mercury prize: 19 male, 8 female/mixed (includes PJ Harvey twice), 1 transgender

Do you suppose Jacob would have complained if a TW had said those allegedly Terfy words?
FannyCann · 09/02/2022 17:10

And his bio says he's a "staunch feminist " Errol Hmm

He's locked his account now. Quite the ratio on that tweet.

Musomama1 · 09/02/2022 17:18

@FannyCann

Recording studio owner interviewed by GB News saying we need to keep "gender" separation in the Brit awards because, "the women will clean up and men won't win any awards". Reporter responds with, "that's exactly what we were seeing last night".

Ha. There was a tweet I can't find now saying something along the lines of how the men were all pleased at gender neutral awards until they discovered they were up against Adele.

Hmmm, and arguing about losing out on the male side, do you think they'll be called terfs the same way we are?
SheldonesqueTheBstard · 09/02/2022 17:43

I’m not the biggest fan but I do applaud her for that last night.

She is woman. She roared. Just keep roaring.

icannotbebothered · 09/02/2022 17:55

I looove that Adele said this and I think it's such a statement from her, I think it does show that she doesn't agree with the decision to scrap awards based on sex. Also love that she connected female with woman. Saying that, I have seen some articles saying that Adele is being called a terf.. I've only seen one person on Twitter say it, so I actually think the papers are stirring it abit there

@Soul11Soul

It seems a bit redundant to change the name of the award to be inclusive to Sam Smith. Sam Smith's lack of decent music in the past few years surely excludes Sam Smith from any category.
😂

Julie in her opinion piece says:

"For what it’s worth, I approve of doing away with the traditional male and female categories, and having prizes for whoever is the best, whatever their sex. It is precisely why I do not use terms such as ‘waitress’ or ‘actress’, preferring not to differentiate women from the default position. It is the same logic that stops me using the prefix of Miss when there is no such prefix for unmarried men."

I agree with her on this on principle but I fear that, in practice, men would dominate nominations and prizes overall.

autienotnaughty · 09/02/2022 20:47

@JakeyRolling
I fear it will look more like this-
2023 A man
2024 A man
2025 A man
2026 etc etc etc

WarriorN · 10/02/2022 07:18

Did anyone see this? (Satire)

The Brits
Gumbomambo · 10/02/2022 08:33

WarriorN I have a feeling that article my be a mock up by Moley. I could be wrong though as it looks like something them/they would say but with more feathers and glitter.

WarriorN · 10/02/2022 09:15

Yes it's a mock up / satire

Gumbomambo · 10/02/2022 09:22

FFS I didn’t have my glasses on and missed you had actually typed satire. Good Grief!! What an idiot 😳

WarriorN · 10/02/2022 09:51

Don't worry; I thought the green party were accusing Emma Bateman of belonging to an eastern religion last week^ due to wonky contacts. Grin (eastern region.)^

BootsAndRoots · 10/02/2022 10:29

Adele has been called transphobic for stating the fact that she is a woman.

Why are we now in a position that the only people who can call themselves women are transwomen?

Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 10/02/2022 10:45

I do wish people would stop blaming Sam Smith, he wanted a gender neutral category yes, but pop stars bleat about things all the time and are just ignored.
The organisers of the Brits are the BPI with sponsors Mastercard, ITV and You Tube music.

  • They obviously thought that it would make them seem in touch with young people and just publicised Sam Smith as an example. (the only one they can think of probably).
ErrolTheDragon · 10/02/2022 14:40

Mastercard?ShockGrin

WorriedMumsDontSleep · 10/02/2022 17:03

Yes the Brits organisers make the ultimate decision.
But just as Lia and Laurel don't get a free pass for exploiting bad policy, why should Sam Smith get a free pass for pushing for it.
