Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

The Brits

Brief discussion on 5 Live just now between Clive Myrie and Colin Patterson about the effect of the Brits having a gender neutral Artist of the Year award to be inclusive to NB. Although they obviously stayed on the fence ('hot potato' 'complex') the point was raised that it could be seen as a step backwards for representation for women. Myrie also highlighted the reason why there is a female category in this and many other awards shortlists. Patterson thought that the issue would be raised a lot in red carpet interviews so could be worth looking out for later.

Only men are allowed to say they love being women.

JakeyRolling · 09/02/2022 06:25

@autienotnaughty

I am all for inclusivity but can't help but feel taking away the female awards will just mean less women win awards/recognition. Surely if it's been recognised the need for gender neutral categories these could have been in addition to the male/female awards .
2022 - Sam Smith 2023 - Sam Smith 2024 - Sam Smith 2025 - Sam Smith 2026 - Sam Smith 2027 - Sam Smith 2028 - Sam Smith 2029 - Sam Smith 2030 - Sam Smith . . . .

It one way to remain relevant and an "award winning" artist, I suppose.

WarriorN · 09/02/2022 06:56

I hope she doesn't make a statement to say "my words were taken out of context is support letter salad..."

ButtOutBobsMum · 09/02/2022 07:08

I've always thought Adele was a bit of a prat, particularly over the recent Las Vegas residency cancellation but she's redeemed herself just for that comment!

Agree. I just hope she stands by her statement. About time someone said it.
FannyCann · 09/02/2022 07:14

Ha ha. Some nice tweets going on.

MrsJamin - sorry, I hadn't really read the whole thread. Was reading the PACE report detailing how awful we are against the LGBTQ+. Turns out we are 5th on the list of being a great country - the issue is nasty women making up stuff about poor men in dresses.....and how silly women are that this is actually a great thing for women.

But I honestly think this has been done on purpose. Let the women have the first one, they are all so stupid they will forget about this by next year. They have other things to do - will be looking at pretty things and getting the kids ready for school.

They are probably really pissed off at Adele for her speech. Really really hope she stands by it - and doesn't back track.

WarriorN · 09/02/2022 07:58

The telegraph says Adele appeared to Wade into the culture war / debate over gender id.

The thing is there's no really evidence. She simply said I'm a woman.

That being controversial in this day and age is ridiculous. The culture war/ debate is being forced onto us by males.

AntsInPenzance · 09/02/2022 07:58

Sam Smith is male regardless of how he identifies, so could still be nominated for best male singer.

DevonTF · 09/02/2022 08:03

WarriorN - Women cannot say they are women anymore. The real issue is she said the 'F'word. (Female)

She connected Women and Female - we should know that simply is not allowed.

  1. What a time to be alive for women.
WarriorN · 09/02/2022 08:05

Crowd loved it though!

PineappleCakes · 09/02/2022 08:07

R4 Today played a clip of Adele's acceptance speech "I love being a woman, female" (something like that). I can't believe she would say that without knowing the impact she would make, I'd like to believe she is pro-women.

Soul11Soul · 09/02/2022 08:11

It seems a bit redundant to change the name of the award to be inclusive to Sam Smith. Sam Smith's lack of decent music in the past few years surely excludes Sam Smith from any category.

I heard that too and was really pleased.

Recording studio owner interviewed by GB News saying we need to keep "gender" separation in the Brit awards because, "the women will clean up and men won't win any awards". Reporter responds with, "that's exactly what we were seeing last night".

Relevant bit about 40 seconds in.

showmethegin · 09/02/2022 08:51

All of this and Sam Smith makes me so so angry. How dare a white bloke co-opt discrimination and use that as a tool to remove opportunities from women. Call yourself non binary if you like, wear what you want, love who you want but the only way this removal of sex categories is fair is if you don't believe in sexism.

I can't imagine him coming out and saying that; but that is what this is ALL about.

Musomama1 · 09/02/2022 08:56

Actually in solo act pop, women were at least a few years ago, dominating, thinking of Adele, Katy Perry, Dua Lipa, loads loads more etc.

It's in instrumental bands that women are badly represented but that's just always been lumped as best group as bands can often be mixed.

GlomOfNit · 09/02/2022 09:00

I wasn't watching last night as it really isn't my thing, but I do sort of like her and did a big whoop this morning when I heard it on Today prog! Grin Good for her, it was SO deliberate. Good for her.

Musomama1 · 09/02/2022 10:04

@EmbarrassingHadrosaurus

So what, exactly, is 'non-binary' reflective of?

Somebody who does not embrace the opportunity to reject the stifling constrictions of gender and be wholly themselves and expand the bandwidth of what it means to be their sex?

Somebody who accepts gender stereotypes and confuses that with sex classes and refuses the latter rather than the former (see above)?

Definitely, have been thinking of this and how NB is such a useless term. I probably would've been tempted to use it as a teenager.

It's just a declaration of buying into gender stereotypes, I'm a bit masculine and a bit feminine.

Congratulations, you are human, we are all like this.

Go Adele!

showmethegin · 09/02/2022 10:55

It's a pointless term especially when you consider the amount of TRAs that swear blind sex isn't binary. If that's the case we're all non binary.

IsabelleSE19 · 09/02/2022 11:58

I didn't watch in the end, but to be fair to the BBC the first I heard of what Adele said was in their news headlines, and that was the only part of anyone's speeches from the Brits that they made a point of highlighting with context.

I would be fairly surprised if Adele wasn't TWAW but maybe not? I do think she is possibly the musical equivalent of JKR and could make a (small) stand without too much damage.

And as others have said, if what she said is in any way controversial then it shows how ridiculous the whole thing is.

crazyjinglist · 09/02/2022 12:43

I've never been a fan, but might have to change my mind now! Having now watched the clip, I think she very much knew what she was saying and meant it.

WarriorN · 09/02/2022 13:04

Julie writes about Adele (and never thought she would!)

Ha. There was a tweet I can't find now saying something along the lines of how the men were all pleased at gender neutral awards until they discovered they were up against Adele.
