Brief discussion on 5 Live just now between Clive Myrie and Colin Patterson about the effect of the Brits having a gender neutral Artist of the Year award to be inclusive to NB. Although they obviously stayed on the fence ('hot potato' 'complex') the point was raised that it could be seen as a step backwards for representation for women. Myrie also highlighted the reason why there is a female category in this and many other awards shortlists. Patterson thought that the issue would be raised a lot in red carpet interviews so could be worth looking out for later.

That's just what I was saying @DevonTF

IcakethereforeIam · 08/02/2022 21:47

Maybe they id as hexadecimal, I vaguely remember that, was that the one with base 8 or 16.

TRANSLENDER · 08/02/2022 21:47

Sam fucking Smith. 😡

I heard Ed Sheeran refer to him as ‘they’ in an interview a while ago. I love Ed and it makes me sad to hear people having to change their language like this. He knows Sam is a man. As someone else said, people can not speak up. The category change is just 💩.

I’m so fed up of attention seekers ruining things for women.

Ha ha, Adele accepting her award for Artist of the Year just said, I love being a female artist! Is she a TERF??

TRANSLENDER · 08/02/2022 21:57

Ha ha, Adele accepting her award for Artist of the Year just said, I love being a female artist!

Oh, I so hope she’s aware of the importance of that comment.

TRANSLENDER · 08/02/2022 21:57

That it was purposefully done I mean.

OverByYer · 08/02/2022 21:58

I cheered when she said that! fantastic.

Definitely making a statement. She's pretty untouchable so it will be interesting to see the response. My guess is no big deal will be made of it.
autienotnaughty · 08/02/2022 22:04

I am all for inclusivity but can't help but feel taking away the female awards will just mean less women win awards/recognition. Surely if it's been recognised the need for gender neutral categories these could have been in addition to the male/female awards .

WinterTrees · 08/02/2022 22:09

Very interesting move by Adele. I'd say she's pretty much the JKR of the music industry, and uncancellable. We'll see how this plays out, but brava to her for going there.

MissLucyEyelesbarrow · 08/02/2022 22:14

Well done, Adele. Not a fan of her music, but I’ve always admired her strength as an artist and business woman.

WeeTorag · 08/02/2022 22:16

Love Adele. Good on her, these words are so important and must never be lost.

Here's the clip...

Thanks for putting the clip on, I hadn’t seen it. Well done Adele. 👏

TRANSLENDER · 08/02/2022 22:45

And hear those cheers when she said it. I don’t think Mr Smith will be too happy with that will he.

JazzyBBG · 08/02/2022 22:46

Twitter being quite positive so far. The TRA's must be asleep.

Linguini · 08/02/2022 22:51

Yay Adele. Proud to be a woman!

KitchenDancefloor · 08/02/2022 23:28

Meanwhile, the BBC is celebrating the gender neutral awards and hasn't reported Adele's words

We see you BBC. We see you.

Ha there's some really funny comments on GC Twitter right now, love it!

SinisterBumFacedCat · 09/02/2022 00:22

When airplay is so skewed towards male artists how in earth will this ever be fair?

Puffalicious · 09/02/2022 00:34

Loved seeing Adele speaking out tonight. Makes my day better since it started with an interviewee on Radio Scotland discussing traumatic birth with the repeated phrase 'Birthing people'. Jesus I wanted to stop.the car and cry to fellow commuters on the motorway, 'What is this linguistic fuckery?'.Angry

TBF Interviewer and other contributor continued to say women and mothers.

DangerQuakeRhinoSnake · 09/02/2022 00:48

Adele hopefully paving the way for other female artists to speak up.

She knows.

(I'm her newest fan!)

AffIt · 09/02/2022 00:58

I'm not a fan of Adele's music, but interesting if she is #NoThankYou - as PPs have said, she is powerful and influential, so that's a very telling statement on her part.

DdraigGoch · 09/02/2022 01:31

@IsabelleSE19

Popstar Sam Smith, who won the critics’ choice prize in 2014 and identifies as non-binary, using the pronouns they/them, had called for the move, saying they looked forward to a time when awards shows are “reflective of the society we live in.”

I don't personally know anyone NB, so it's not really reflective of the society I live in. I do know lots of males and females though.

I don't know anyone with a private jet either so all of these singers are pretty unrepresentative of society. Whatever happened to Susan Boyle? Much more reflective of people I see every day.
