Peter Tatchell says bisexuality will be the new normal for many

^In the future, as homophobia declines, most people will no longer define their sexuality so rigidly and exclusively. The boundaries between gay & straight are already blurring. Bisexuality will be the new normal for many.'

Really, Peter? I see this has attracted outrage from a number of gay men and lesbians already, and quite right too.

Denis Kavanagh on Twitter is on fiery form. twitter.com/Jebadoo2/status/1482103455460339713?s=20

As a straight woman, I look on at his weird shenanigans with incredulity. Does he have no judgement, no insight, no common sense? He was the best known gay rights campaigner in the country a few decades ago. What happened?

How are the boundaries between gay and straight blurring? Hmm

owlinnahat · 14/01/2022 23:26

Bur this isn't new. He's been saying a world without homophobia would have fewer people identifying as straight or gay, but more people experiencing both same sex and opposite sex relations for over twenty years. It's always been his stance. You might not agree with him, but I am confused as to why people are suddenly being outraged now.

BootsAndRoots · 14/01/2022 23:28

That's his opinion, many disagree and to be fair I've read some of his essays years ago, before the trans rights and gender movement started, and he said the same then.

One of his beliefs is this symbiotic relationship between gay identity and homophobia. It's an interesting theory, but probably one best reserved for academia. Probably nonsense, but it at least gets people thinking.

I suppose now his theory reads (or he has changed it) as everyone should become bisexual to fit trans people into their dating pools.

Wtf is ge on about. Being open about your sexuality may have changed a bit but sexuality itself hasn't. You don't go from straight to bi or gay to bi because someone says it's OK Confused you either are or you aren't.

I'd find lesbians and gay men suddenly declaring bi sexuality a sign that maybe they are being coerced. We know.lesbians are fir sure. That should ve something that bothers him as opposed to a cause fir celebration

Omicrone · 14/01/2022 23:30

He's obsessed with other people's, especially young people's, sexuality and sexual experiences. He is such a creep.

CamomileTeabag · 14/01/2022 23:38

I think what he means is without the social pressure to conform to being straight, which admit it, most of us age 40+ definitely grew up with, many more people will experiment and maybe find that they could go either way.

I'm straight, as far as I know - but I've never been with a woman. Perhaps if I'd had positive sexual connections with women before I got married as freely as my daughters' friends seem to, I might have found that I liked it more than being with a man.

Back in the 80s when I was growing up, the pressure was to find a boyfriend. If never crossed my mind, or any of my friends' minds, to look for a girlfriend. No one was gay, or at least no one would admit to it. Teenagers of today aren't hemmed in by 1980s homophobia like we were.

Get with the times Grandpa Peter, all the cool kids are pansexual these days.

Except now there's social pressure for lesbians and gay men to include the opposite sex in their sexuality. That's the homphobia amd that doesn't appear to be going away any time soon so not sure what he's really on about

Triphazards · 14/01/2022 23:48

Tatchell is lower than the dirt under my feet.

His opinions are worth less than nothing.

Really? Do you think lesbians and gay men also just need to open themselves to a positive sexual connection with the opposite sex?

Because I think you'll find we've got a lot of the history of human misery that says thats not the case.

Some people are bi which is great, but equally some people have other perfectly valid orientations and saying that these are just the result of an oppressive society that should just loosen up sounds....off.

”The boundaries…..are already blurring.”

Yes, Tatchell is all about blurring boundaries Hmm 🚩 🚩🚩

Plus ca change, plus le meme chose.

Back in the 80s we could be ostracised, kicked out of the family home, denied access to housing or employment, insulted, beaten and correctively raped for being too queer (before the word got its facelift). Now, apparently, we'll get all of the above for not being queer enough.

Poor bloody lesbians, always at the bottom of Tatchell's Brave New World Order. Funny that.

I guess he means vulnerable people will be coerced into crossing their boundaries and having even more sex with people they aren't attracted to than they do already. Progress!

And somehow for men crossing those boundaries seems to be a matter of choice, a liberation; whilst for women either straight (if you're married to a transwoman) or lesbian (genital preference is just like racism, don't you know)...somehow not much choice or liberation involved there, is there..?
Whatshernamevirginiaplain · 15/01/2022 01:48

He was always a creep. Dodgy. Why anyone takes him seriously after the things he has came out with , I dunno.

SantaClawsServiette · 15/01/2022 01:49

Sexual behaviour has a significant culture element and always has. If culture changes, people's behaviours can change too - mainly it's not older people doing things differently, it's subsequent generations.

I'm not sure he's right in this case but it;s not a crazy idea.

Sort0f · 15/01/2022 04:21

There’s that study that showed that the straight men with the most homophobic opinions were likely to be the ones with the strongest sexual response to gay porn.
