I was quite looking forward to this show, but looks like they'll be tying themselves up in knots to affirm TWAW... and doesn't that kind of make the whole premise of the show redundant?

Basic premise for those not familiar - overnight every mammal with a Y chromosome mysteriously dies.

Two comments stick out from this article that contradict eachother:

  1. [There are some] men with two X chromosomes
  2. the cast and the crew — are making a show that affirms that trans women are women, trans men are men, nonbinary people are nonbinary

But surely if TWAW then there wouldn't be any immediate crisis following the death of all those with a Y chromosome. If TW were women then humanity could continue procreating and it would be business as usual?

I was genuinely looking forward to this show, but now it just seems like it's going to be an absolute mind melt in the pursuit of woke point scoring. Is anyone else struggling to get their head around this?

Haven't watched and probably won't have time to, but read Lucy Mangan's review in the Graun and wondered if it had been spotted yet. She describes it thus. To take account of... what now?:

"the convulsions the makers must have had trying to decide what to do when updating 2002 source material about a chromosome-based pandemic to take account of a gender-fluid world that is trying to abandon the binary system upon which the entire inciting event depends"

I've just started watching this show. Really struggling to feel sympathy for the transman character who, despite half the population being actually dead and the other half being in mortal peril, is primarily concerned that his personal supply of testosterone is running out. Reminds me of that American woman they showed on TV during the lockdown protests last year who was moaning that she couldn't get her roots redone.

sashagabadon · 02/10/2021 20:09

I think it would be interesting to see a show where all the women die and how quickly the world turns feral and lord of the flies.

Yep, I don't think producers would want ro go there though. I think we can all have a pretty good idea of what fate would await the last remaining woman in a world of men Sad
BettyFilous · 24/10/2021 13:21

I watched the first 4 episodes yesterday. There was a group of anxious transmen earlier on who were headed for the mountains to stay with a “transphobic grandma” who had rounded up a supply of testosterone. There’s another main transman character who is fretting about only having 1 phial of testosterone. When someone commented there were no men, the president snaps “we have lots of men, ones without Y chromosomes.” I am yet to see any coverage of the impact on pregnant women or those who have given birth since the global event. It was mentioned that they are protecting sperm bank power supplies and have fertilised embryos on ice, but are unsure if the samples are viable. So have there been still births in women near term? Have male foetuses died in utero so other women needed terminations/inductions? What has the impact been for those women of a complete collapse in medical infrastructure and power grids? Not a peep, as far as I can see. 🤷‍♀️

@ludothedog

It's a ridiculous concept anyway, like women couldn't survive without men and society would decend into chaos. I'm assuming the writer has never met a woman? We'd have our shit organised within days, supply chains up and running with farming communes and folks growing in their back gardens. And no men to.commit DV and sexual assaults. Could be interesting 🤔
For a speculative fiction novel about this, try Virginia Bergin Who Runs the World?
MarshmallowSwede · 24/10/2021 13:38

Does anyone know want to make a bet until how long before this is cancelled?

Will it make it one season? Be given a pity second season because?

OldTurtleNewShell · 24/10/2021 13:38

I can't be bothered to be annoyed at this, it's so ridiculous. It's a shame because it could be such an interesting premise. There's so much they could have done with it, but nope, they've just gone for a superficial view of what it would look like and tied themselves into knots to build in a pile of pseudoscience. What a waste.

MarshmallowSwede · 24/10/2021 13:41

If all women died .. that show would be one episode. All men would either commit suicide or kill one another. No second season possible.

A world without men means we could be outside after 6pm without being afraid. It’s a big reach to say the world would be in chaos.

Women are doctors, engineers, architects, carpenters. We would be just fine. I would miss my husband, but would not miss him farting in bed.

MarshmallowSwede · 24/10/2021 13:43

Serious question.. do “Butch” lesbians no longer exist?

I think it’s terrible we just assume a masculine lesbian must be someone identifying as a man. They have been totally erased haven’t they?

Highwind · 24/10/2021 13:44

I thought this already got cancelled a few days ago?

BettyFilous · 24/10/2021 14:09

I thought this already got cancelled a few days ago?

God forbid we have series (almost) entirely led by and featuring capable women putting a broken world back together.

Lovelyricepudding · 24/10/2021 14:10

So all the men die and the show writers are still incapable of not focusing on 'men' so they focus on a trivial percentage of women desperate to do what? Continue to present as men? Why? And if medical supplies collapse then why focus on testosterone not antibiotics?

BettyFilous · 24/10/2021 14:11

Finally! A miscarriage.

Noapplejustcrumble · 24/10/2021 14:22

I actually think that this series is actually quite good at making young people realise that TW aren’t women and TM aren’t men. Shows that sex, ie chromosomes, are what makes you a woman, not clothes/make up.

BettyFilous · 24/10/2021 14:32

And now for the science stuff. The mad scientist is explaining DSDs. “Infinite variations… Not everyone with a Y chromosome is a man… So many brilliant women.” Over-optimism on Noapple’s part.

DuckDuckNo · 24/10/2021 14:53

This is why many want it cancelled, even though it has tRanS rePreSentation: it is still an uncomfortable reminder about those pesky chromosomes.
Kendodd · 24/10/2021 14:58

Well I'm really looking forward to a transwoman turning up on Naked Attraction.
That'll be an interesting watch.

NonnyMouse1337 · 24/10/2021 15:24

Does anyone here remember a spoof documentary style film made in the 70s or 80s I think - I'm sure I watched it on Netflix or Amazon Prime....

The general storyline was that women were getting pregnant without having sex - sort of like an immaculate conception. And they were giving birth only to daughters. No boys were being born. And no one knew why. Men were slowly becoming a rarity as they died out and the film was following the life of the last man who was born.

It was an interesting storyline and very funny as it made fun of women and men. I can't for the life of me remember the name of the film, but I'd highly recommend watching it.
It sounds like this new TV show / comic is sort of based on that original premise.

Babdoc · 24/10/2021 15:34

Is it a comedy? Because it sounds incredibly silly. Three and a half billion rotting corpses would cause absolute havoc in terms of disease - how the hell would the survivors dispose of them all? Let alone run all the infrastructure with over half the workforce missing.
And even if the one surviving man was locked up in a sperm bank and forced to spend the rest of his life wanking, the human race would still die out as every other species wouldn’t have that option, so we would be stuck on a sterile planet. Or are they postulating that male bees etc would be unaffected?

GoodieMoomin · 24/10/2021 15:42

@Highwind it did indeed

BettyFilous · 24/10/2021 15:46

It doesn’t look rosy Babdoc. Food is already an issue, plus qualified staff to run eg power stations. There are corpses everywhere. In large, occupied buildings they’ve just annexed areas where they haven’t cleared the bodies. A bit like The Road, I don’t think it would hurt to die in the first wave or initial event. Dystopia sucks, even if it means a more diverse range of women’s naked, soapy breasts and bodies make it on to screen. Hmm

Babdoc · 24/10/2021 15:55

“cleared the bodies” BettyFilous? Cleared them to where? How? You’re talking 35 million corpses in the UK alone! There’s no graveyard or crem facility big enough. The whole premise is beyond daft.

BettyFilous · 24/10/2021 15:58

I dunno. 🤷‍♀️ Somewhere else downwind. Yeah, the plot has more holes than Jarlberg.
