screenrant.com/y-last-man-gender-identity-spectrum-details/

I was quite looking forward to this show, but looks like they'll be tying themselves up in knots to affirm TWAW... and doesn't that kind of make the whole premise of the show redundant?

Basic premise for those not familiar - overnight every mammal with a Y chromosome mysteriously dies.

Two comments stick out from this article that contradict eachother:

  1. [There are some] men with two X chromosomes
  2. the cast and the crew — are making a show that affirms that trans women are women, trans men are men, nonbinary people are nonbinary

But surely if TWAW then there wouldn't be any immediate crisis following the death of all those with a Y chromosome. If TW were women then humanity could continue procreating and it would be business as usual?

I was genuinely looking forward to this show, but now it just seems like it's going to be an absolute mind melt in the pursuit of woke point scoring. Is anyone else struggling to get their head around this?

@SpindleWhorl

"every living mammal with a Y chromosome dies. Tragically, that includes many women. It includes nonbinary people and includes intersex people. But that’s also true of the survivors"

said a complete melt involved with the production.

Where to even start?

It needn't be this complicated. It's simple biology, if you've got a Y Chromosome you're dead. Or even more simple, all males died.

The mental and linguistic gymnastics they're performing just to skirt around biology is staggering.

I really look forward to seeing how they'll address the whole issue of reproduction and the survival of humanity if, as they claim, TMAM Hmm

What a completely unnecessary mess they've got themselves into.

Oh well, it's not like there's a shortage of good telly and classic films available these days.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/08/2021 10:11

How ridiculous. It's vanishingly unlikely that "women with a Y chromosome" would be unaware of that past their teens, given that they wouldn't have periods and would have medical investigations for this reason.

AssassinatedBeauty · 16/08/2021 10:32

I don't know how they can realistically affirm their mantra that TWAW when the possession of a Y chromosome will mean they are all deceased.

John Landgraf, the chief exec of FX said in the linked article -

"A lot has changed since the graphic novel. One of the things the show will make clear is that there are women with two X chromosomes and men with an X and Y chromosome — but there are also women with two Y chromosomes and men with two X chromosomes. So what happened was all the mammals with a Y chromosome — with the exception of this one man and this one monkey — died in one event. But there are numerous men in the show that had two X chromosomes, and they’re important characters. It’s also made clear that a number of women died that day who had a Y chromosome and probably didn’t even know it.”

There seems to be some deep misunderstanding about sex chromosomes if they think that there are women with two Y chromosomes. Men can have XYY chromosomes but that is a DSD condition.

It sounds like the whole premise of the show will now be about how trans identities are the focus of the story after the apocalyptic deaths of all male creatures. Rather than about the survival of the human race or the nature of a suddenly all female society. And I suspect that whatever they do in terms of trans identities as a storyline will not be sufficient or correct enough for the wrong-think monitors.

ValancyRedfern · 16/08/2021 11:27

What a hot mess. I'm hopeful this may actually be a wake up call for a lot of fans.

NecessaryScene · 16/08/2021 11:46

A lot has changed since the graphic novel.

To wit, the lunatics are now running the asylum.

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 16/08/2021 11:51

They're going to imply that the world is chock full of women who unknowingly have a Y chromosome. Blurring the lines between men and women by lying about DSDs.

AssassinatedBeauty · 16/08/2021 12:11

Given the current world population, there might be somewhere in the order of 70 to 80 000 women with Swyer syndrome which I'm guessing is what they are referring to by women who have a Y chromosome but are unaware of it. But, any of those possible women with Swyer syndrome who live in a country with adequate healthcare would have had their condition picked up as a teenager due to lack of puberty/menstruation. Very few would be adult women with absolutely no idea about their condition. It's taking a rare intersex condition and using it to make some kind of point about transgender ideology and gender identity.

SpindleWhorl · 16/08/2021 12:19

"It’s also made clear that a number of women died that day who had a Y chromosome and probably didn’t even know it.”

But when they die, how is anyone going to know who had what chromosomes? Over 150,000 or so people drop dead world wide every day (and that's pre-covid). So will they all be assumed to have had the 'wrong chromosomes'?

And in the midst of the chaos of half the planet dying and presumably needing rapid disposal, the dead bodies are all going to be chromosome tested, are they?

I'm really confused 😕

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 16/08/2021 14:26

SpindleWhorl I'm sure there'll be an entirely logical way that the film can explain all of these things.

aloris · 16/08/2021 16:07

Having one human male left on earth would be difficult, that's for sure, but it would be recoverable because one man is capable of fathering many children. On the other hand, having one human female left on the earth would be much more difficult to recover from, as women can only have a limited number of children. Her life would be in constant danger from the competition over access to her body. It would probably be a living hell for her.

I wonder if that issue will be addressed in the show.

somethinginoffensive · 18/09/2021 09:18

@manatsu

Oh, I've read the article now - it wouldn't load before. So trans women will die on account of having a Y chromosome, but the show will make it clear that many men are still alive because they're XX (or DSD with other chromosome combinations). But the titular last man is the last man. But he's not, he's just the last Guy with a Y. But we're calling him the last man. But that doesn't mean everyone who died was a man. And men are still here. But he's the last man. But TMAM.

Isn't the solution just to call it 'The last Ejaculator'
After all, such terms always help with inclusion, never cause offense and are not in any way dehumanizing

Also, his pet monkey should be called Spank, not Ampersand

JojobaFromOctober · 18/09/2021 10:22

"Isn't the solution just to call it 'The last Ejaculator'

Yes, perfect. Nobody could possibly have a problem with this unless they are a hateful, petty minded bigot. It gets right to the heart of the biological issue.

Dougalskeeper · 18/09/2021 21:06

If I remember correctly YY is a lethal combination so would die in utero irrespective of any virus or whatever. Sounds like a shit programme.

'Please don't cancel us. Please? PLEASE?'
ludothedog · 19/09/2021 00:25

It's a ridiculous concept anyway, like women couldn't survive without men and society would decend into chaos. I'm assuming the writer has never met a woman? We'd have our shit organised within days, supply chains up and running with farming communes and folks growing in their back gardens. And no men to.commit DV and sexual assaults. Could be interesting 🤔

ItsLateHumpty · 19/09/2021 00:45

And we’d still have frozen (human and animal) sperm should we fancy reproducing again….. unless all the frozen sperm / male embryos die too? 🤔

FrippEnos · 19/09/2021 00:46

From memory the original blurb/description for the contained the descriptor "cisgender" which should give away how poorly written it was going to be.

Driftingblue · 19/09/2021 01:21

DH wanted us to watch this. I warned him that if they started playing into gender stereotypes I would start screaming at the tv and go on an epic rant. We took the chance. So far it is fine. Nothing about the trans men being the providers or protectors. Just an acknowledgment that some people claim a gender identity and that during an apocalypse, getting testosterone is going to be a problem. It’s a bit pandering, but on the level of I really don’t care how adults choose to live their lives.

Driftingblue · 19/09/2021 02:10

The virus kills almost instantly with massive hemorrhaging. It’s ridiculously obvious who the victims are.

I did wonder what trouble it would really be to have the men disappear, but the problems in the beginning are distinctly practical. There are dead bodies everywhere. Billions of dead bodies. There were countless accidents as vehicle and machine operators dropped dead within a matter of moments. So the women aren’t simply facing needing to get organized and redistribute the work, they are facing a world of twisted metal and rotting corpses. I’m still finding it a bit difficult to believe how hard it has been to get things up and running, but Covid has shown just how fragile our infrastructure actual is. I’m frustrated by the lack of mass organizing that really should be happening. They have people sitting around languishing and getting scared when they should be organizing workers .

Sonarl · 19/09/2021 05:11

Dearie me, did none of the idiots involved in this show pay attention during biology? YY is impossible.

And anyome with a DSD involving a Y chromosome would know they weren't female at puberty.

SpinTheTeacups · 19/09/2021 07:51

I wonder how they will collectively refer to the group of people who died, and to those who survived.

YY to "The Last Ejaculator".

(No pun intended on the YY Grin)

ErrolTheDragon · 19/09/2021 08:09

So this show is going to affirm that TWAW but they died anyway because....
ah. Biology.

If they'd tried to rejig the story so that somehow all the people they want to call 'women' survived they'd have strained credulity too far.

WhatsAppening · 22/09/2021 14:15

I’m watching the show and it is legit hilarious how much they have bent themselves in knots to be inclusive. There’s a trans man character who is sad because they will now have to be out as trans. A shrine to their fallen sisters.

The President says ‘no of course not ALL the men, just the ones with a Y chromosome’.

Reddit didn’t disappoint though because guess what, it’s still TWANZPHOBIC according to them because biology is a meany pants.
