Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I don't much care for the 'gender critical' handle. Is there anything better.

I am relatively new to the Women's versus trans rights debate. Despite my very lefty leanings, I have ended up on the gender critical side for a few reasons. My training as a scientist, my sense of fairness, my personal reaction to the attempted erasure of language like 'women' and 'mother' and the hideous places that he total enforce t of TWAW takes us.

However, I really don't like the terminology of gender critical feminist. I would much rather be defined by what I do believe in rather that what I am critical of. And I am not critical of gender per se, it is the pseudo religion of gender ideology that I have a beef with.

I know sex is real, and immutable
Sport needs to be fair for it to work
Women on jail need to be free of worry about rape
Women need single sex spaces

Is there a terminology that frames this position in a less negative way than 'gender critical'?

Pro-women?

JustcameoutGC · 04/06/2021 21:25

But that then opens the 'what are women?' question.

Others will know better than me but could you perhaps describe yourself as a “second wave” feminist?

xxyzz · 04/06/2021 21:27

I sympathise. I agree that by being forced to define ourselves as gender critical, that focuses attention on what we don't believe in, not what we do.

I prefer to call myself 'feminist'. That's what defines me. I fight for women's rights. Not against anyone.

I would also call myself a radfem. But just plain feminist would do probably better - people assume radical feminism must = equal extremist feminist because that's what they see radical as meaning, although it doesn't here.

I know liberal feminists have tried to claim the word feminist for themselves. But I prefer to reclaim it to its original meaning.

Wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 04/06/2021 21:27

Pro-reality?

NoIdontwanttoseeyourknob · 04/06/2021 21:29

I tend to describe myself as a “women’s liberationist” rather than a feminist as I am fed up of being told that feminism should include men.

Faranth · 04/06/2021 21:29

Pro-sex? Grin

I'd like an alternative term too. I think the way i feel is that if gender is religion, then I'm atheist.

Thelnebriati · 04/06/2021 21:37

Women's libber.

Sex-based women's rights supporter.

Accepter of Biology.

zanahoria · 04/06/2021 21:41

common sense

dolorsit · 04/06/2021 21:42

I don't define myself as a gender critical feminist. I always wonder when feminists stopped being critical of the concept of gender or more accurately gender roles.

Over the years I've increasingly become bored with the list of things you can't do/be/say if you are a feminist. So I've gone back to my roots and where I started.

I'm a women's libber 💪

InvisibleDragon · 04/06/2021 21:43

Biological realist?

zanahoria · 04/06/2021 21:44

the bleedin' obvious

MarshaBradyo · 04/06/2021 21:45

I agree op, it’s not very clear either

ScreamingMeMe · 04/06/2021 21:46

@InvisibleDragon

Biological realist?
Bit close to "race realist".

You're referencing Jessica?

Science bitch Grin

DoingItMyself · 04/06/2021 21:48

My suggestion for a name to replace 'gender critical' is 'sex supportive'. Grin

RedDeerRunning · 04/06/2021 21:48

'sex reality'

JustcameoutGC · 04/06/2021 21:49

Maybe back to women's lib? I like a 70s revival. But once again back to what is a woman? XX lib?

Pro-Sci?

eurochick · 04/06/2021 21:50

I agree. It's very negative sounding. I'd prefer a more positive description.

JustcameoutGC · 04/06/2021 21:50

But then again science bitch is tempting. Maybe biology babe?

Interesting way of framing it....
