I think the putting a candle outside your door at 9.30 was a better idea, although you needed more of a tea light with a partial cover. Really sad at the way this has ended up.

Potatgo · 13/03/2021 23:15

I think the saddest part is, we all knew this was going to happen.

That some people would politicise it and attend for reasons other than the intention? Yes of course we knew that, same old.

TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 13/03/2021 23:15

The police have to follow the law, at the moment there are (ridiculous) covid laws in place re: gatherings, they can't go against that and say well actually go for it, no matter what they might have wanted to do. Impossible to tell from photos on twitter whether those who have been restrained were 'peaceful' or not imo.

People have a legal right to protest during lockdown

In fact, if you search for Spiked and Rwanda, they're still at it.

MmeLaraque · 13/03/2021 23:16

Whoever was on MN earlier trying to defend the police, because they are an officer. Oops. Shot yoursleves in the foot now, didnt you? Shitty images. Shitty. Shame on all of you, defending *that.

Was it a protest or a vigil?
TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 13/03/2021 23:18

The point here is - if you knew people were likely to turn up, if you knew there was potential for it to hijacked, as a police force wouldn't you want to do everything you could to help it pass peacefully so that the pictures on the front of the Sunday news papers are of flowers and candles (as the first editions were), rather than go in and man handle and arrest women over what? What did those women do?

Bullshit.

What does it show? That in a crowd of maybe a thousand, four men weren't wearing masks and got into a scuffle with violent police who were manhandling girls.

Not a jot of proof they have any links with Antifa or BLM, but sure believe everything a far right wing account whose profile proudly proclaims "Patriot. Love Liberal Tears" and does nothing but RT racist twaddle, including RTing from a Katie Hopkins fansite, because apparently in the hellhole that is 2021 Katie Hopkins fansites are a thing.

Antifa = anti fascist. That's the default, surely?

BLM... why is that a problem? WOmen are a minority grou according to police. We don't matter. Thei behaviour tonight has demonstrated that we don't matter.

I went to a very peaceful, respectful vigil in Walthamstow today. No police, and no hijackers. On Twitter I saw a beautiful remembrance on Iona. Maybe there’s a story about all the small, honouring gatherings.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 13/03/2021 23:32

RIP Sarah

Her family who have asked for her name and image not to be used must be even more distraught than they were already as their daughter just becomes a prop in the usual photo op politics of the SWP and Sisters Uncut.

I agree. Shame on them.

Yes I agree, it's heartbreaking, and people should be ashamed.
RosesAndHellebores · 13/03/2021 23:43

The Everard family have acted with utter dignity.
What a shame others, including the Met, have not.

Agree. It's awful. What a bloody mess.

I'm beyond livid at the footage on the news. The Met have totally misjudged the national mood.
Society can't handle women's anger.

" A lot of those women were white, so where's their apparent privilege?? We all know the answer to that."

I don't know this. Can you tell me?

whittingtonmum · 13/03/2021 23:59

Can't believe they arrested the women at the vigil in the way they did & the general inapropriate policing of this peaceful gathering. The Met need to urgently stop digging given the massive hole they were already in before these terrible goings-on.

They are supposedly policing by public consent. Good luck with rebuilding that trust with the women of London. Dear oh dear. What a disgrace.

I personally lit a candle on my doorstep at 9.30 pm. But I think those who felt they needed to be in Clapham Common today should have been given a safe option to do so.

DandyMandy · 14/03/2021 00:06

I always think about the fact that women have been through so much for millennia, but we're still here standing strong and will continue to thrive. I genuinely think this is the beginning of a new dawn and many are waking up. I'm sickened by the police. RIP Sarah.

DdraigGoch · 14/03/2021 00:07

@lynsey91

They should not be having any vigil. What happened to covid rules? Also how many are wearing masks. I see that Kate wasn't
Didn't you notice police officers kneeling in the summer? Were those protests ok?
Originalyellowbelly · 14/03/2021 00:08

I just feel heartbroken for Sarah's family, especially her mum, it's mothers day and her beautiful daughter is no longer here, some people should be ashamed of their behaviour tonight.

Impatiens · 14/03/2021 00:11

They are supposedly policing by public consent.

Yes they love to trot that phrase out don't they? I never know what they think they mean by it.

awesomekaren · 14/03/2021 00:11

A reminder to everyone angry about how this vigil had been handled that the Government will be voting imminently on the new policing bill which will increase police powers to clamp down on protest.
