Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I've got my paper census - remind me what I do?

Having read a thread on here about how to register a protest without upsetting the quality of data collected, I ordered a paper census and now can't find the thread Blush.

Please can someone remind what I was supposed to do? Or should I hang in until after the judicial review anyway? Sorry, I'm struggling to keep up on this one.

Details are here;

WookeyHole · 10/03/2021 22:41

That was it, thank you!

If I may piggyback... What happens if I do the online version and put "sexist question" under gender identity?

Aha85 · 11/03/2021 08:35

I've been thinking about writing something like "Gender is mysogyny" in the box as to how you identify, but I think it might backfire as I suppose there will be a certain amount of taking the headline figure of how many people say they identify as something other than their sex, ignoring what was written.

So I think I'm going to leave that question unanswered. I understand it's optional.

bourbonne · 11/03/2021 08:38

Good point. I was imagining my distinguished great-great-grandaughter going on Who Do You Think You Are in a hundred years time, and having my census return gently placed before her by a futuristic robot version of Dr Fern Russell, who would explain that I was one of those women.

WookeyHole · 11/03/2021 08:48

Yes, I'd had the same thoughts on headline data and also people looking in future. I'm going to leave it blank and will have to explain to DH why he has to leave his blank too Grin

Unfortunately I don't think the vast majority of the population understand the constructed difference between sex and gender, so will answer them to be the same rather than leave blank. I certainly would have done that a couple of years ago without giving it a second thought.

JanewaysBun · 11/03/2021 08:51

I was unsure whether to write "gender is misogyny" (my main thought) but also tick the "female" gender box as I want to make sure I'm counted for service provision?

WookeyHole · 11/03/2021 08:58

Given their recent track record anything, including the obviously stupid is possible, but I would have thought it wouldn't be a good idea to use an optional question for mass service provision?

So using the sex question, with a review of the gender data for specific provisions would make most sense? Depends at what level they share the gender responses? Would they release complete data or aggregates?

@JanewaysBun

Wouldn’t service provision be based on anatomical sex though? Smears, breast screening etc
TheRabbitOfCaerbannog · 11/03/2021 09:08

Blatant place mark!

JanewaysBun · 11/03/2021 09:10

Yes good point. I think I'll leave that box unticked

bourbonne · 11/03/2021 09:40

Apologies if I've missed something, but has it been suggested that we all give an identical protest answer? Like when thousands of people put Jedi as their religion?

DropDTuning · 11/03/2021 09:42

I believe the consensus was not to answer the gender identity question. Answering it immediately implies accepting their terms.

Hadalifeonce · 11/03/2021 09:45

I was considering using the religion question to include Feminist.

If Jedi counts.........

bourbonne · 11/03/2021 09:45

I see. Yes, having looked up the wording of the question and the answer structure (as I should have done before asking), I'm inclined to agree.

Hadalifeonce · 11/03/2021 09:47

As I fill in the form, I will leave the gender box empty for all.

FemaleAndLearning · 11/03/2021 10:10

I will answer the sex question but on my paper copy write "please record as my biological sex", I think that is the suggested wording.

Gender question I will leave blank.

Religion question tempted to write gender critical. Not keen on identifying myself as a feminist as I don't want any one to think I'm a lib fem!

Igmum · 11/03/2021 10:30

Thanks for this OP. Another blatant place mark and I will send off for my hard copy of the census today

Aha85 · 11/03/2021 11:59

Wouldn’t service provision be based on anatomical sex though? Smears, breast screening etc

They would but what I'm worried about is that if we all tick box about identifying as something other than our birth sex, that could inflate the numbers of people believed to be trans in the U.K. (as they may ignore what we write in the box about gender being a load of bollocks). I can see the TRA arguments that will be coming after the census: X number of people answered that question positively but only ~6000 people have a GRC, so obviously we need to streamline the process and give people more legal gender options.

That's why I'm leaving it blank. I just want the data to be accurate.

Tempusfudgeit · 11/03/2021 12:11

I just filled mine in. They asked how my 1 year old daughter would define her nationality. Currently she identifies as a Tombliboo, but there wasn't a section for that!

Manderleyagain · 11/03/2021 12:31

From the campaign site linked upthread:

"Order a paper copy...
Complete it in full and answer the sex question in line with your biological sex.
Then print off the template letter we have prepared and return the letter together with your completed census questionnaire to ONS"

They say fill in sex but not gender identity.

The letter is important because it forces them to register that your sex is to be stored only as sex at birth, and to respond to you.

It also includes this:
"am sorry that that I am unable to contribute to responses to the new voluntary Question 27, because of the way it has been worded. I do not accept that I identify with a gender, so I am unable to respond with either a “Yes” or “No” to the question “Is the gender you identify with the same as your sex registered at birth?”. When you are considering why response rates to this question were not higher, please take cases like mine into account."

I suggest waiting until after the fpfw juducial review next week before printing the letter, in case the campaign letter wording changes in response.

minchinfin · 11/03/2021 14:49

Is there a way to answer the census online inline with the GC position or do I need to get a paper copy?

WinstonsWeirdVole · 11/03/2021 14:59

Argh, I wish I’d done this (I filled in the online version without giving it much thought and simply ticked “female” for sex then omitted the gender question). Well done to all of you actively challenging this madness!

Manderleyagain · 11/03/2021 15:06

I expect you could send the letter, giving your full details so they can cross reference it?
