Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I've got my paper census - remind me what I do?

WookeyHole · 10/03/2021 22:32

Having read a thread on here about how to register a protest without upsetting the quality of data collected, I ordered a paper census and now can't find the thread Blush.

Please can someone remind what I was supposed to do? Or should I hang in until after the judicial review anyway? Sorry, I'm struggling to keep up on this one.

@minchinfin

Is there a way to answer the census online inline with the GC position or do I need to get a paper copy?
Yeah, the optional question is phrased along the lines of "do you consider your gender identity to be different to your sex?", with possible answers of "yes", or "no, please state".

So the GC way is to simply not answer it. Because we don't recognise the concept.

bourbonne · 11/03/2021 15:12

Sorry, I muddled the yes/no bit in my post above. Hopefully you knew what I meant!

minchinfin · 11/03/2021 16:52

yes, thanks :)

I quite fancy sending the letter as well now so I have requested a paper copy.

Placemarking so I can refer back to this when I receive my paper copy - thanks all!

Socrates11 · 11/03/2021 21:45

Paper copy arrived today.

Lol bourbonne that's a great thought.

Good idea to wait until judicial review done next week to see if letter needs to change.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 13/03/2021 23:52

I ordered a paper version.

DH (picks up card) shall I fill this in online then?
Me - no I ordered paper
DH - only takes ten mins, why ... ohhhh... are you going to do... some kind or protest?
Me - maybe...
DH - alrighty...

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 16/03/2021 10:39

Anyone else had theirs? I ordered a paper one when I had a letter with the code a couple of weeks ago and still not received anything.

LizzieSiddal · 16/03/2021 10:44

I got mine pretty quickly Mumm, within days. Could you order another one?

MummBraTheEverLeaking · 16/03/2021 10:56

I'll give it a try Smile Fingers crossed!

ThisIsSimplyBeyond · 16/03/2021 13:59

I know what's being done with sex and gender - I just want to know if the supers are putting that under sexuality...? 😄

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 16/03/2021 14:12

This is where to get your paper census form:
census.gov.uk

You give your name and address and answer a few other questions. There's still time to request a paper census form -- I requested one this afternoon and was told it would be sent.

Zeugma · 16/03/2021 14:35

From comments on here I gathered that every adult can request a paper copy, even if they live in the same household. I ordered one and DH also ordered one separately - we intended to fill them both in and include a copy of the letter each.

My paper copy arrived (after quite a wait); his hasn't. He's re-requested one but can anyone confirm that it's permissible for each adult in a household to complete separate forms?

Thanks

Mum and I requested the paper copy via phone about ten days ago

No sign of it yet.

DresdenChina · 16/03/2021 15:42

So what am i supposed to do? i was sent a paper copy though i did not ask for one. I tick sex female and ignore gender box, is there anything else?

MsFogi · 16/03/2021 15:46

I ordered one a couple of weeks ago - still no sign. I wonder if they have had quite a lot of requests and are struggling to get through them Grin.

Outbutnotoutout · 16/03/2021 15:47

Place mark

I have filled in, now awaiting my letter

oxalisRed · 16/03/2021 16:47

Got my paper copy yesterday, just looked at it. There's no guidance with the paper version, so it doesn't show the guidance change from last week.

So is the concensus here that I fill in the compulsory sex question and leave the voluntary gender question blank? (although I'm tempted to put No Gender, in line with No Religion for the earlier religion question)

Should I still print off the Sex in the Census letter and include that? Or are we waiting for the judicial review? A bit confused....Blush

WookeyHole · 16/03/2021 17:55

Yes, that's correct in terms of consensus: complete the compulsory sex question and leave the gender question blank. Consensus is not to enter any alternative in the gender q to avoid contributing to any headline stats such as number of people who have completed it and number who have put something different to their sex.

It seems sensible to wait for the judicial review before printing the letter, just it case it gets updated as a result.

LunaHeather · 16/03/2021 17:57

So the consensus on the census

Don't say non binary either?

Zeugma · 16/03/2021 18:04

I'm going to wait until the full judicial review hearing happens on the 18th. Then I'll follow whatever advice is given over including the letter with my paper copy.

Census day isn't till the 21st. I'm not filling anything in until then.

This. Thank you Zeugma

There is no rush to do anything. I might even wait for a census door knocker to turn up. Our paper copies have not arrived yet and as I understand it the chaser-uppers will be able to give you a paper copy there and then.

Mine took about 10 days from ordering to deliver, I'm annoyed I ordered several and only got one. So I'm going to try ordering yet again.
WookeyHole · 16/03/2021 19:22

That's interesting @Gurufloof I ordered four but haven't actually opened the envelope yet. Hope they're all in there!

I haven't yet looked it up, but does anyone know, if I do paper, could DH still do online? Not sure he'll be to chuffed if I have to force him to spend time with a pen and paper!

I'm also wondering if it would be ok or wrong to add a letter the the DC's? I think probably wrong.

OP posts:
MiddlesexGirl · 17/03/2021 09:26

Yes DH can do online.
Anyone who does an individual return will have their answers overwriting anything the householder (the one who fills in the main form) may have done.
