I have no idea what the problem was with the first thread:

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/f41a64d6-3b06-11eb-ac13-4bedd83a49b7?shareToken=5da2f939004fbc868487990f57bb89c0

OP posts:

Again, I’ll say - what a crappy list with random tiktok children who presumably only other children have heard of, a selection of trans women who haven’t done anything more than turn up, fictional women, a couple of models. If this is the best women, then we really are in trouble.

Ozgirl75 · 20/12/2020 08:54

Terrible grammar, I do apologise.

WorriedForWomen · 20/12/2020 08:55

Thanks for the share token, @Igneococcus.

I didn't post on the last thread but I read it, and I'm going to rephrase the element of it which I suspect was the problem: "Three of the women of the year are biologically male".

Floisme · 20/12/2020 08:55

Thanks - I didn't realise the other thread had gone, I'd only just posted on it! All I can think of is that individuals on that list were being mentioned by name?

Interestingly the Times comments are also being heavily moderated.

Yep. I'd been on the verge of subscribing to the Times (after finally realising the Guardian's not going to change), but this has changed my mind again.

Ozgirl75 · 20/12/2020 09:00

Normally the Times is pretty good with its columnists but this article is just embarrassing. It’s like it’s been written for another magazine (an American one maybe?) and then lifted and copied.

Oh I see.

Well this is fascinating.

MichaelMumsnet · 20/12/2020 09:06

Hi all, we've deleted posts that either break the Talk guidelines or make this discussion all about a deleted thread. It's fine to discuss the list but we'll take the thread down if the TGs continue to be broken.

Floisme · 20/12/2020 09:10

Thank you. So basically we can talk about the list but not about some of the individuals who are on the list?

Winesalot · 20/12/2020 09:11

Thank you for the share token.

I also note that while Mary Wollstonecraft’s statue, and some amazing female activists who campaign for their special interests, no UK female activists who concentrate solely on women’s rights were included. Oh, and a male activist made the list ... or two, in fact. (Let’s not forget the judge who has had the benefit of being male to progress their career is on the list and not a female judge who has achieved DESPITE not being male)....

That list needs some attention.

Wasn’t there also a UK female writer who dominated the top ten book lists and also released a best seller this year???!

Ozgirl75 · 20/12/2020 09:11

I don’t see how saying that if I were trans I would also be embarrassed about the list as none of them are very inspiring either, is against talk guidelines.

Floisme · 20/12/2020 09:13

Dolly Parton's on there, so there's that.

carlaCox · 20/12/2020 09:15

Came here to say the same thing! A suspiciously absent name on here... I wonder why that could be?

ErrolTheDragon · 20/12/2020 09:16

This looks like a list created by trawling their content for the year for 'she' and counting mentions to see who has been in the news rather than necessarily value judgements.

Maybe we should focus here on some of the women on the list who are worth celebrating here. The comments section says much we probably can't.

My picks are Emmanuelle Charpentier, Jennifer Doudna, and of course Sarah Gilbert.

JaneJeffer · 20/12/2020 09:21

They need to stop making these stupid lists.

ChakaDakotaRegina · 20/12/2020 09:28

How did that buzzfeed article end up in the times?

Isn’t the first entry a tv character? Why is there a badly received naked statue in it? Why didn’t the Nobel prize winners get a spot each? Why are there so many actresses and models? Why are there 3...

EyeRollForever · 20/12/2020 09:29

I've come to expect better of The Times

ErrolTheDragon · 20/12/2020 09:30

Hang on... I'm so used to not recognising the entertainers or singers on these sorts of list that I missed that the first name is a fictional character in some series I've never heard of either.Confused

Bizarre.

JaneJeffer · 20/12/2020 09:33

I think it's a piss-take. Naomi Campbell is on there for cleaning her aeroplane seat for fucks sake.

gardenbird48 · 20/12/2020 09:39

And then there is the American rap star famous for a pretty pornographic video/song title and getting shot by her boyfriend.

It truly is a bizarre list and I would argue that a significant number of people/non women have no reason being there at all.

TheMarzipanDildo · 20/12/2020 09:40

A tik tok star is on there. The earth is burning and we have a plague but at least the tik tok people are getting the recognition they deserve eh? Confused

merrymouse · 20/12/2020 09:46

At least one of the women is fictional and it is in the 'Style' section. I don't think it is entirely serious.
