I have no idea what the problem was with the first thread:

Agree Ozgirl. There is a glaring lack of a slapdash and patronising 'man of the year' list.

I think bornatXmastobequiet is right on why the list is so bad.

DidoLamenting · 20/12/2020 10:51

Adele was Weight Watcher of the year.

If Sturgeon is included why not Arlene Foster? I don't think Foster lied and hid facts about when the first Covid cases appeared in N. Ireland

ErrolTheDragon · 20/12/2020 10:57

Sure, Dido, Arlene Foster is also a woman of genuine significance like Sturgeon. If you want to include someone, go ahead. As per my suggestions we don't have to agree with or like all the women on this list.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/12/2020 10:58

..sorry, I thought I was on the other thread.Blush

Ozgirl75 · 20/12/2020 11:01

The entire adjacent article on Christine Quinn (?) is basically unreadable. I mean, I know I’m 43 and therefore possibly above their ideal reader age, but it is the Sunday Times, I can’t be that far outside the demographic.
I have no idea what any of the references mean (what is Bobby Fischer? What is a complete melt Fischell? Are we really using “eye raping” as a phrase now? How would a “menacing rope of violet Game of Thrones sex hair” actually look?), I don’t even know who this woman is that they’re referring to? I live in Australia so I am a little out of touch but honestly, this article seems to have been written by someone who 1. Can’t string a sentence together and 2. Doesn’t proof read.

Floisme · 20/12/2020 11:05

I don't mind a mix of serious and fluff - that's how the world is for a lot of us. If it hadn't been for all the deletions, I'd have wandered off after posting my feeble joke on the first thread. It's the fact that there are clearly people taking this seriously enough to watch and report that's keeping me here.

bornatXmastobequiet · 20/12/2020 11:07

Ha! See my PP about Style sections in Sunday rags.

Yes! I used to quite like style - it was funny and witty and not too serious, but now I suppose I’m just straying further and further from the age of the writers and feel like my mum saying “I can’t understand a word these youngsters are saying any more”.
2Rebecca · 20/12/2020 11:11

That is an awful list. Left wing woke identity politics bias. Where are Liz Truss, Keira Bell, Johann Lamont?

Floisme · 20/12/2020 11:12

I'm surprised they didn't find room for Cher who rescued an elephant and has impeccable credentials. But as you say, the writers probably have the combined age of a mayfly.

Kaliorphic · 20/12/2020 11:14

Again, I’ll say - what a crappy list with random tiktok children who presumably only other children have heard of, a selection of trans women who haven’t done anything more than turn up, fictional women, a couple of models. If this is the best women, then we really are in trouble

Yes. We need to start a proper list of the women who have actually achieved something good. Starting with JK Rowling.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/12/2020 11:24

Errol has started a list for our nominations.

Needmoresleep · 20/12/2020 11:44

Can’t load comments. Have they taken them down altogether?

I am with you and have lived in UK for over a decade.

Bobby Fischer (always four moves ahead according to the Hilltop Hoods, maybe wore noted sweaters???) is the only thing I can help you with. That Bobby was a chess master.

I am off to look up the rest because I feel like a complete ‘melt’ not knowing.

Ozgirl75 · 20/12/2020 12:05

So what exactly would it mean to “Bobby Fischer the shit out of a situation?”, I guess to be four moves ahead in any situation?
I quite like that as a reference actually. Very specific.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/12/2020 12:06

Yes I quite like that too!

Winesalot · 20/12/2020 12:17

Ozgirl75

Who knew the lyrics to Cosby sweater would be so helpful!?

FortunesFavour · 20/12/2020 12:31

Dreadful list, and the exclusion of JK is so disappointing from the Times. Comments are encouraging though.

Melroses · 20/12/2020 13:13

Someone has commented that they didn't include Janice Turner.

This comment about sums it up:
Apart from the Queen. Really. And you wonder why men rule the world

Ereshkigalangcleg · 20/12/2020 13:20

Oh yes:

Janice Turner

Deborah Cohen and Hannah Barnes (Newsnight puberty blockers/Tavistock stories)

Suzanne Moore

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 20/12/2020 13:22

I won’t look at lists like this any more. It will only cause my bloody pressure rise. They are worthless these days anyway.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 20/12/2020 13:24

But then it’s like when they have awards like ‘mum of the year’ and it’s someone like an ex pop star with many many children, a drug/drink habit and only claim to fame is falling out of taxis drunk at am in a state of undress, and a contract to appear in Hola at least once every other month (Engagement, Marriage, heartache affairs, divorce, baby, plastic surgery...)

GCFeministNC · 20/12/2020 13:30

Emily Maitless. Not always correct but she does asks some hard questions.

I think the Times have not only turned Comments off they're not letting people read them. I'm assuming the author as the up and coming editor of the Style section may have been a bit cowardly.

ThatIsNotMyUsername · 20/12/2020 13:55

In what order are they places exactly? Are comments switched off? What a joke.

OldeMagick · 20/12/2020 14:04

I'd be embarrassed to be included on such a pointless and virtue signalling list. It's a joke.
