I have no idea what the problem was with the first thread:

I used to look at these lists of these lists of women and think "are they going to go there" that has become inevitable now, I just sigh and think "how many"

if they are including males on the list then what is the point?

merrymouse · 20/12/2020 09:49

It also lists Carrie Symonds as 'First Lady'. On the other hand the Queen is on the list, so maybe she won't mind too much.

mum2jakie · 20/12/2020 09:50

God what a depressing list!!

merrymouse · 20/12/2020 09:52

There is no point. Less than 100% of the people on the list actually exist. The list is in the bit of the paper that does 'going up' 'going down' fashion lists.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/12/2020 09:53

It's an Xmas week piss take.
Do they have a similar silly list for men?

merrymouse · 20/12/2020 09:54

This is not a serious list:

"Naomi Campbell
Model
Supermodel, actress, businesswoman, activist ... sanitising icon? Did Campbell know something we didn’t when, back in 2019, she showcased her comprehensive aeroplane hygiene routine on her YouTube channel? Wearing plastic gloves and armed with Dettol wipes, she zealously wiped down her seat, the windows and even the air vents. Campbell also turned 50, marking another decade at the top of the industry, from where, in a year of racial reckoning, she used her powerful voice to call out the continuing inequality in the fashion world."

What a disappointing list. Not a women of the year list, a woman who were written about on the Internet list.

Could I nominate a few deserving women?

Ruth May, Chief Nurse, for refusing to say what Boris/Cummings told her too and getting banned from the press conferences.

Kiera Bell for being utterly brilliant.

Prof Sarah Gilbert for the Oxford Vaccine.

bornatXmastobequiet · 20/12/2020 10:00

It’s utter dross, like everything in any Style-type section in any Sunday newspaper, a section designed to provide employment for talentless young people with connections in the industry to earn ridiculous amounts of money for producing pages of content-free wittering.

Gurufloof · 20/12/2020 10:04

Ok if it's just a silly list which is why naomi Campbell is on it, then why not leave the comments open, why not make it clearer that its parody, why ...

SmallPug · 20/12/2020 10:05

Gosh it's truly shocking to see that not only is The Times deleting the comments pointing out the truth, but so is Mumsnet!

How about a new thread for our nominations for women of the year, rather than associating them with this disappointing drivel?
SmallPug · 20/12/2020 10:06

My women of the year are Keira Bell and JKR.

LajesticVantrashell · 20/12/2020 10:08

Hmmm, would Adele have made that list if she hadn’t lost weight? Are we praising women now for becoming more socially and aesthetically acceptable?!

LajesticVantrashell · 20/12/2020 10:10

I nominate Iseult White and Abigail Shrier.

Great idea.

gardenbird48 · 20/12/2020 10:14

The disappointing part of this (apart from some of the names in the list) is that they invite comments and contributions and then have shut down commenting and deleted most of them - although I’m glad to see Jo March is still standing. Such a poor show from the ST.

Floisme · 20/12/2020 10:15

I know it's not meant to be that serious. I think the point is that some people are taking it very seriously indeed, hence all the deletions.

Ok, I'll start one.

fakenina · 20/12/2020 10:30

In the spirit of the article; what a shit list.
What was the point of that? I mean with so little going on in the world...

merrymouse · 20/12/2020 10:31

Ruth May (Chief Nursing Officer)

merrymouse · 20/12/2020 10:31

wrong thread!

Ozgirl75 · 20/12/2020 10:36

Thing is, I did initially read it and think “this is one of those “who’s hot who’s not” type lists where of course it’s not serious and is more about who has touched the news this year in the entertainment section, but the inclusion of Jacinta Arden, various scientists etc suggest that it isn’t supposed to be an entirely “soft”’list and therefore I think I’m justified in feeling a bit aggrieved that out of the women doing “notable” things this year, so many are models, reality stars, pop singers etc, none of whom really add all that much to the world outside that in which they inhabit.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/12/2020 10:47

the inclusion of Jacinta Arden, various scientists etc suggest that it isn’t supposed to be an entirely “soft”’list

There's a decided disconnect between the scale achievements of those women and much of the rest. Essentially I think that reflects how high the bar is for women (and actually men too) doing serious work is to get recognised by fluff 'journos' and the general public versus 'celebrities' . Well, for the latter it's pretty their whole raison d'etre so that's hardly surprising.
