Grayson Perry's Art Club' Exhibition

www.channel4.com/programmes/graysons-art-club. I really enjoyed watching this series during lockdown because the amateur artists are very diverse and it showcases some interesting work. In this week's episode, for the final exhibition of their work, Grayson Perry dressed up in a way he is open about being very sexually aroused by. He has these clothes specifically designed to hide an erection. He didn't dress this way in any of the previous episodes. I found this totally disrespectful of him, especially when he was talking to the amateur artists who travelled to Manchester for the event despite covid, including a 17 year old girl and a young man with autism. The programme was primarily about the members of the public and showcasing their art. It's a nice pre-watershed family-friendly programme that has children on it, like a young 12 year old boy who made a collage of his twin brother who passed away.

Why does Grayson act out his fetish in events he attends that are not remotely 'adult' in nature?

Grayson went to a a primary school event with the Duchess of Cambridge and decided to wear his fetish gear to that so I have no idea where he draws the line. This is so accepted by society at large but I cannot feel comfortable with it. He seems so Jekyll and Hyde. Would a man wearing a gimp suit be invited along with a royal to speak with children in a primary school?

Also, his wife Phillipa Perry was the joint presenter and she made art too so I don't know why her name was missing from the title. It would have been more accurate to be called 'Grayson and Phillipa's Art Club'.

I'm now wondering if OP is actually GP trying to drum up some shock so he can get some fetishism satisfaction again.

'Lettera

Dido, do you have an opinion on men who deliberately dress or present themselves in such a way as to provoke a reaction that will arouse them sexually? (I am not suggesting that this is what Perry does.) That is the subject of my post, not goths, punks or anyone else you consider 'looks a bit out of the ordinary'.

I have no opinion on them- should I have? I'm not especially aware of ever having met any.'

As that's what the thread is about, why are you posting if you have no opinion on it?

So in the who can wear what they like category, I'd rather Harry in a frock at my child's school than Grayson.
Well, the other two would be ace but their attendance is even more unlikely

Harry Styles? So you can read this mind can you? His motivation is pure as the driven snow? He pretty obviously does it to shock and draw attention to himself - which is absolutely fine but beyond that you have no idea what else he might get out of it. But you might want to look at these pictures- do they pass the FWR acceptability test?

The point of the thread is to have as many posters as possible criticising Grayson Perry. What you mean is why are you posting if you don’t want to validate the OP's outrage.

@DidoLamenting yes, I’ve noticed that. Odd isn’t it.

If you can find me something supporting Bowie dressing up for sexual kicks and / or involving the unwitting participation of others I'll read it and take it on board. Everything I've read is about him starting out in mime and generally being quite pretentious, image conscious and naval gazing.

@Scout2016 there’s quite a lot about him fucking 13 years olds though...

I could post plenty of links showing why holding Bowie up as the ideal of a man in dress makes you (general you) look very silly but they will be deleted. Google is your friend here.

I'm not disputing that Poorlykitten.

Harry Stiles wears frocks to get sexually aroused?

When did he make that claim?

Isn’t that why most men wear frocks? Isn’t that the point?

I am in no way suggesting that Bowie is the ideal man, in or out of a dress.

This Grayson Perry thread which has gone from "we must ignore his fetish" to "we must talk about people who aren't Grayson Perry" is certainly an odd one. Interesting to watch though.

He didn't. I didn't say he did but beyond the obvious shock value you (general you) have no idea what his motivation is but apparently some of you can mind read and have passed him as acceptable. Although some of the dresses in one of the links aren't that far from Perry's little girl look.

Is the ideal of a man in dress.. a man who wears it without boring on about how it gives him a ruddy erection?

Or are there other factors to be taken on board?

I have no reason to have an issue with Harry in any of those outfits Dido. If he does an interview telling everyone he did it for sexual gratification I will revise my opinion.

Because no thread ever , ever develops into other areas. Still you can always start posting recipes or biscuits to get it back on track.

Take it up with poster Scout2016 they posted the list of alternative acceptable men, including one extremely dubious example.

I have tried not to stray too far from the OP's original argument, which was around known motivation.

Blimey. Are you my dad? He thought that the young men I hung out with in the late 80s/early 90s were all wrong 'uns because of the way they dressed.

So the conflation of nonconformity and fetish still persists. I'm a bit shocked, actually.

Bowie was quite obsessed with the painter Balthus, (famously painted pre pubescent girls in inappropriate positions) and was known for sleeping with very young girls himself. I have never understood why we aren’t allowed to talk about this on mumsnet?
