Leeds City Council “opening a second managed prostitution zone” in East Leeds

According to Julie Bindel on Twitter, a Labour councillor has confirmed the rumours. Apparently its because the independent review was so positive and will take some heat off Holbeck if the trade can dilute to another zone as well!!!

Wtf??? Crossgates East Leeds apparently.

Does anyone know what we can do if we live in Leeds?

I was thinking about how to put in a complaint about the continuation if holbeck managed zone on the basis that they didn't use a statistically significant sample of the local population and so didn't take into account their views. Doubting that would make any difference. I'd like to do sonething as well as write letters and be an annoyance to the council.
Even knowing who is doing something that I can send some useful cash to.

But god forbid a group of women should be allowed to speak up for women’s rights in a public place, like the Leeds ReSisters and Posie who were arrested at the weekend.

MrsGrindah · 23/09/2020 18:03

FFs please God let this not be true. I live near Holbeck and I’m from Cross Gates and can not comprehend why anybody thinks this is a good idea.

Just what I was thinking. This is horrific.

If anybody gets up a petition, please put a link here so we can all sign. I don't live in Leeds, but I did live there in my teens. I was there at the height of the Ripper murders and I remember vividly how frightening it was, and how the first murders were downplayed because the women were prostitutes. WYP dealt with that abysmally. Leeds appears still to have a problem valuing women's lives.

nepeta · 23/09/2020 19:59

So Leeds needs a second marketplace which caters for men's sexual relief needs.

InconvenientPeg · 23/09/2020 20:03

Richard Burgon lives in Cross Gates, though none of the local councillors do.

Cross Gates is a very patchy area, despite the revival of the centre and new bars and restaurants.

I'd suggest writing to MPs, councillors and anyone who'll listen. If Leeds think it's so successful, who is to say what city will adopt it next.

I massively prefer the Ipswich approach.

I have contacted Richard Burgon, our MP, about this but haven't heard anything back yet. I'm not his biggest fan but he is much better than he comes across when being interviewed.

To be honest I will be amazed if it really is Crossgates they are considering for this. I am fairly sure that it will turn out to be Cross Green and the reference to Crossgates is a mistake.

Yes, there are some pockets of deprivation in Crossgates but on the whole it is a residential suburb, with largely privately owned homes and a couple of shopping centres/retail parks, and which has no history of having a red light area. As CrankyCrog posted there are large new build estates going up as well, and the houses aren't cheap. It makes absolutely no sense for Crossgates to be selected for this.

That said, Cross Green shouldn't be selected for this appalling scheme either.

MrsGrindah · 23/09/2020 20:25

Well done @MyBedIsMyDesk . He’s not my MP but I’ll be dropping him a line too. Agree that Cross Green doesn’t need it either

MrsGrindah · 23/09/2020 20:26

I’ll get in touch with Hillary Benn too

MyBedIsMyDesk · 23/09/2020 20:33

Good plan MrsGrindah This is just horrible!

FoxBaseBeta · 23/09/2020 21:03

FFS, I suspect it is more likely to be Cross Green, but, despite it being an industrial area, I think there's also some very deprived residential areas there. So a prime target for being shat on...Angry

Has Julie Bindel given any indication as to where she got the info from? Agree that Crossgates seems an unlikely target for another of these hideous zones but that if they're planning another one anywhere it needs to be put out there so people know what the council are planning and can make their opposition known.

Marmite27 · 23/09/2020 21:10

@Butterer

If you're in Leeds, write to the head of Leeds Council , your councillor, and MP? I don't know whether to also write to the councillor/MPs of the areas in question . I think in the last managed zone thread somebody also advocated writing to the Yorkshire Evening Post etc.
Would it be possible for someone more articulate than me to do some form of template?

I’m so fucked off with this, I’d like to email but don’t know what to write. I’m raising two little girls in Leeds and I’m terrified for them (and all the others) Sad

MonkeyPuddle · 23/09/2020 21:12

My local councillor is being questioned on a local FB page as to his position on the location of the second proposed site and his stance on the first one.

FoxBaseBeta · 23/09/2020 21:24

If it does turn out to be Cross Green, it's the 30th most deprived neighborhood in the country.

CrankyCrog · 23/09/2020 21:39

Christ if it does turn out to be Cross Green then that's a low blow for an area that already has its share of problems. Evil fuckers to even consider this.

Gurufloof · 23/09/2020 21:50

In fact as this is up near the top and people will see it, please feel free en mass to email
[email protected]

Or contact the council on Facebook
m.facebook.com/Leedscouncil/

Email the mp
[email protected]

Finally also email the sister paper to the above
[email protected]

Copied over from other thread where there is one or two templates to help you start.
This is a terrible idea wherever its planned. Women who live in holbeck are at risk, and probably cant afford to just move out of the area. But they are very often propositioned, and as we know there is always a risk when men are turned down. Fucking atrocious idea to do this all over again elsewhere. It's as if Leeds wants to be a prostitution capital. God knows why.
