Very much enjoying her new book which I purchased in hardback

NecessaryScene1 · 22/09/2020 18:23

Watched Arty Morty's today, and this exchange from that summarised what she's doing well:

- I think she's become a lightning rod for so much abuse and misogyny and she knew what she was getting into, she did.

- This is her charitable contribution, like, "I can take this, because I have all of this money and power, so I'm going to use that money and power and sacrifice some of it for this cause", don't you think?

She's already donated so much money to good causes. But she's now putting her entire reputation on the line.

Yes!

Wasn't there a witch in Harry Potter who use to enjoy getting caught and burnt by witch catchers because being burnt tickled (obviously there wasa spell to stop you actually getting burnt)?

Malahaha · 22/09/2020 19:39

Indeed. Her hard-earned wealth and success and "privilege" is exactly what enables her to speak out when more vulnerable women cannot.
Cancel culture cannot reach her. She could have kept quiet and enjoyed her status and wealth and popularity, but she put her neck out on behalf of others. I admire that so much.

Datun · 22/09/2020 19:43

Excellent.

Almost as good as offering to lend the rabid book burners her lighter.

🤣

FloralBunting · 22/09/2020 19:46

I have quite a few pin badges from Wild Womyn Workshop. Delighted to be a fellow patron of the store!

You didn't comment on my original question.

Why should other women who don't have her privilege and power put up with being called a witch? It's been said on this thread there are worse misogynistic worlds we can be call. I don't believe we should settle for the lesser of any evil.

I agree with what you say about her privilege and I understand that it won't impact JK to be called a misogynistic name. Maybe that's the problem?

ErrolTheDragon · 22/09/2020 19:56

On second thoughts though - do women get called witches much nowadays, or is it largely a 'reclaimed' term? Because if you want a prime example of being 'on the wrong side of history' , that'd be the witch-finder, not the witch.

MsWonderful · 22/09/2020 19:58

@rosecakequeen

I think she's doing it on their behalf, takes the sting out

Let's not speculate about such a serious subject.

She may be rich and white (the ultimate sin) but she had still had thousands of rape and sexual violence threats sent her way. She’s got every right to choose to subvert those if she wants to, imo
MsWonderful · 22/09/2020 20:01

No one should “put up” with being called a witch or any other misogynistic term. But we’re still allowed to have a bit of a laugh at our tormentors’ expenses, aren’t we?
It just so happens that being laughed at is the one thing that REALLY upsets them, too Grin

Smellbellina · 22/09/2020 20:02

I really like that observation.

Meceme · 22/09/2020 20:06

Shes a star!
Have ordered that shirt for my daughter's Christmas stocking. I ❤ JKR.

rosecakequeen · 22/09/2020 20:18

She may be rich and white (the ultimate sin)

I'm sure that wasn't intended to be as racists as it came across.

but she had still had thousands of rape and sexual violence threats sent her way.

We have all seen the threats and it's the very reason I don't use social media anymore. I've received threats of rape online and I can't even imagine the abuse women and celebrities in the public eye receive.

I just can't help thinking that the social media threats were much easier to cope with that threats in real life. Even when I came off social media, I've still received received rape and sexual violence threats against me in the real world by real people. I just haven't seen the evidence that JK is currently in this position.

She’s got every right to choose to subvert those if she wants to, imo

She does and she has.

No, it wasn’t intended to be racist at all. I’m sorry to hear that you’re receiving threats in real life, that’s shit. Who is threatening you? Does it happen often? Is there anything anyone on here can do, advise, or anything like that? I assume/hope that JKR isn’t in a position where she receives threats irl, just like I’d assume most people (but not all) are not receiving threats irl.
TheChampagneGalop · 22/09/2020 20:40

Her books about witchcraft and wizardry made her famous, and idiots want to burn her books and cancel her. This t-shirt is perfect for Rowling.

BabyItsAWildWorld · 22/09/2020 20:50

I genuinely day dream about being in a packed stadium of women who give JKR, who is on the pitch, a thunderous seemingly never ending standing ovation.

It makes me quite teary while I sort the socks 😁

She's taking the heat for women because she knows she can.
I'd love her to one day feel the love for that!

And she wrote Harry potter 😍!!!

I’m going imagine that, too now - love it!

It’s such a great T-shirt for her, like thechampagnegalop said, she’s made a career writing about witches, so it’s really not an insulting word. I don’t have it in the same category as “bitch” at all.

TheChampagneGalop · 22/09/2020 20:57

She's well and truly nailed her colours to the mast here!

I'm surprised the TRAs haven't got her into the trending sidebar yet.

I've ordered some bits from WildWomynWorkshop!

Campervan69 · 22/09/2020 21:39

Angela is going to be busy!

And yes, as she wrote about witches the T Shirt is perfect.

I also have the thousands of women chanting 'JK ROWLING' football crowd style, with hands up and out stretched. And we just won't stop Grin

Oh, thank you for that reminder. I was there and I cried! It was all just so overwhelming.
