Well this should be interesting!

Ayann is much more than this article, but if you're not familiar with her, here's something she wrote about J.K -

Always good to have men who are happy to explain what feminism is to women involved in debates about women's rights Hmm

Wondersense · 04/09/2020 12:48

It's apart of it, but the event is about broader cancel culture.

Ayaan's book The Caged Virgin is brilliant.

She is a survivor of childhood FGM, she renounced Islam, fled Sudan and took Dutch nationality, and has a Fatwa hanging over her - and this is not an idle threat; her collaborator on a film about this, Theo van Gough, was gunned down and murdered in the street in the Netherlands. Politically right-of-centre, having started on the left, and pro-free speech, she's a thorn in the side for the Woke; she should win their oppression Olympics hands down, but she's politically on the other side, and they can't get their heads round this.

Billy Bragg on the same panel as her and JB - I predict fireworks! This could be fun.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 04/09/2020 12:52

That’s brave of Billy given how outclassed he’s going to be intellectually by the rest of the line up.

WeetabixBananaHipsterFFS · 04/09/2020 13:19

I look forward to Bragg mansplaining to AHA. All the popcorn.

ThinEndoftheWedge · 04/09/2020 13:58

Wow - that sounds amazing. I love JB and AHA. BB is a total tool who will be utterly outclassed.

Interesting that the men (excuse me if I am misgendering - but I didn’t see their pronouns) are against the motion. Men get cancelled less. Men - including BB cancel women for saying what a woman is. It’s almost as if people really did actually know the difference!

I'll put a tenner on AHA (though the ref may stop it early).

queenofknives · 04/09/2020 14:38

I'll definitely be there to cheer on the women. Isn't it amazing how it's men against women? The men no doubt all fired up to explain why it's all fine and there's no need to worry about freedom... Can't wait for this.

I wonder if there'll be some last minute drop outs when the men realise how outclassed they are? Will BB claim 'no debate' in order to get out of it?

Freespeecher · 04/09/2020 14:38

Can't see Bragg beating the ten count after this:

Oh god, yes. AHA is properly scary. Intelligent, eloquent, knows her own mind, doesn't take any shit. I think (hope) she will wipe the floor with Bragg, the misogynistic little pipsqueak that he is.

Manderleyagain · 04/09/2020 15:03

Have regained some respect for Bragg seeing he's chosen to do that. People are v much allowed to disagreeing with me on significant things as long as they can put their case and don't just pretend that everyone has always held their position, anyone who disagrees is a bigot and there's no debate to have.

This event looks fab.

Wondersense · 04/09/2020 15:47

I've already signed up.

I don't know who he is!

I haven't. If he wanted respect, he shouldn't have blocked so many people who politely disagreed with him. My guess is he thinks he can win the argument because he is up against two women and assumes he's cleverer than they are.

Wrong!

This is not about feminism. And even if it were , feminism is a political movement so why shouldn't men express a view?
Vermeil · 04/09/2020 16:18

Should be interesting. Andrews is one of the Guardian’s pet academics, of the sort that gives contemporary academe such a bad image.

Suffrajester · 04/09/2020 16:50

Billy Bragg's been such a disappointment. A singer who promotes himself as a man of the people and for the workers, supporting working class women being sacked.

Helmetbymidnight · 04/09/2020 17:04

oh hes a serial blocker of women. it took me by surprise how much he hates us.
look forward to the debate, thanks op.

TheRealMcKennaDonsTinfoilHat · 04/09/2020 17:33

I can’t stand Kehinde Andrews, he’s so utterly patronising. The combination of him and Bragg would lead to me just wanting to throw something at the Wifi router.

I don’t need to hear any more of their opinions - I hear echos of them every time I turn on Channel 4 nears.

SoManyActivities · 04/09/2020 17:49

Yes, that's what I thought too. I hope he gets an absolutely roasting, he is such a twat!

Those men give no shits about women's opinions. The women could win the argument and the men would walk out of there still believing that they, the men, are right and the women are hysterical fools.

This event poses low risk to their egos and their sm following.

FannyCann · 04/09/2020 18:36

Ooh. This should be excellent. Thanks for posting OP.

Side issue but I've been signing up for so many webinars recently. The live meetings I have been to have been great, and the chance to chat to other women, and absorb the atmosphere is a joy, but so often one can't get to them for reasons of travel or childcare or whatever, so having access to online meetings is a really important new pleasure.

Yes, it's the old adage about playing chess with a pigeon. The pigeon knocks all the pieces over, craps all over the board, then struts around with its chest feathers puffed out thinking it's won.
