Well this should be interesting!

www.intelligencesquared.com/events/cancel-culture-is-threatening-our-freedoms/

Ayann is much more than this article, but if you're not familiar with her, here's something she wrote about J.K -

This looks interesting! I wonder if 'hate incidents' will be discussed? (as opposed to hate crimes)

RoyalCorgi · 04/09/2020 20:02

Yes, it's the old adage about playing chess with a pigeon. The pigeon knocks all the pieces over, craps all over the board, then struts around with its chest feathers puffed out thinking it's won.

This is an absolutely perfect summation of the way trans activists behave in any kind of debate.

ItalianHat · 05/09/2020 07:43

I’ll be interested to see what Prof. Andrews has to say. Last time I heard him speak ( on diversity in academia) he said he’d rather read Malcolm X than Kant. Both were pretty nasty about women, although I think it was only Malcolm X who theorised that a woman’s place in the revolution was on her back.

twoHopes · 05/09/2020 08:07

Fantastic. Genuinely can't wait to hear these two brilliant women outargue, and outwit these two men (especially the insufferable Billy Bragg). Bring it on.

KimThomas · 05/09/2020 08:13

ItalianHat - I think that was Stokely Carmichael, not Malcolm X.

BrollyKnickers · 05/09/2020 08:40

It's on 22nd of September so there's plenty of time for Billy to pull out.

(Assuming he's clever enough to realise that he's not clever enough to debate with the likes of AHA and JB.)

ThinEndoftheWedge · 05/09/2020 09:39

Billy Bragg's been such a disappointment. A singer who promotes himself as a man of the people and for the workers, supporting working class women being sacked

Indeed - does anyone have the tweet where BB said it was perfectly acceptable for women to be sacked for stating men can’t be women?

And he’s going to argue:

What we are witnessing is activism by and on behalf of marginalised groups who are seeking to redress the structural inequalities that have historically held them back...The principal critics of this activism are the privileged elites who, while claiming to be defending free speech, can’t tolerate criticism of their own cherished views.

What an utter MRA hypocrite.

liverbird10 · 05/09/2020 10:09

I'd always thought Billy Bragg was a decent bloke, am surprised to read all this. Sad

Calyx72 · 05/09/2020 12:02

Registered, thanks OP

Ah, we have two weeks to wait, was just getting excited.

@KimThomas thanks for that! I couldn't remember and was too lazy to google (slaps own wrist). I suppose part of my point is that historically, many revolutionary movements, dedicated to relieving oppression, systematically either overlook patriarchal oppression of women, or deem it not as important as whatever other oppression needs to be contested.

Viz. current gender ideology extremism ...

ItalianHat · 05/09/2020 12:30

What we are witnessing is activism by and on behalf of marginalised groups who are seeking to redress the structural inequalities that have historically held them back

The only way you can argue this with a straight face is if you deliberately ignore the record of treatment of women and girls because they are female.

Let's write the list:
Femicide: the millions of foetuses aborted worldwide because they are female
Rape of women and girls because they are female
Paying women less because they are female

Shall we go on ...?

NB: for the record, it is a woman's right t choose if she continues a pregnancy, but she should not be forced to terminate a pregnancy because of the sex of the foetus,

twoHopes · 05/09/2020 13:00

What we are witnessing is activism by and on behalf of marginalised groups who are seeking to redress the structural inequalities that have historically held them back

The key point here is "on behalf of" isn't it. I really look forward to Billy Bragg explaining to a woman born in Somalia and a working class lesbian how he is acting "on behalf of" marginalised groups. Please Billy, do tell us more.

TheRealMcKennaDonsTinfoilHat · 05/09/2020 13:35

Shall we go on ...?

You missed FGM off that list. Fortunately, AHA should be able to educate the bros on that one, and the effects she experienced from speaking frankly and openly on behalf of undoubtedly the most oppressed women on earth.

Nah, he showed his arse on twitter a while ago.

Wee Billy? But will he let the little ladies speak? Always came across as an phoney and an insufferable bore who like the sound of his own voice too much (there I’ve said it - always thought it but it used to be like saying you kicked kittens for fun).

Childrenofthestones · 05/09/2020 15:01

"You grew up in freedom, and you can spit on freedom because you don't know what it is not to have freedom" AHA

Brilliant come back

“Whiteness is a process rooted in the social structure, one that induces a form of psychosis framed by its irrationality, which is beyond any rational engagement.

How can anyone debate someone who could actually write such utter dross? Is this what passes for academic rigour these days?

Excellent. We can count on you attending then? Grin

I think you should read the life story of Ayaan Hirsi Ali.

My blood pressure won’t take it! I should chose to be amused but I’d just end up yelling.

thinkingaboutLangCleg · 05/09/2020 23:29

I used to love and admire Billy Bragg. Can’t believe how he despises women now. I’ve still got most of his CDs, love how honest he sounds, someone you’d like to have a drink with. This really hurts.

There appears to be a spelling mistake in the title of the paper...

This is, of course, why we end up with people like Rachel Dolezal and Jessica Krug, as within academia identity gets wielded as a shield. The more oppression one can claim, the more that your career will progress, unhindered by questions like whether your work can be substantiated, or even if it meets measures of basic competence.
