Miriam Margolyes being a massive transphobe

She's criticising JKR - calling her conservative. Then she says, 'If you seriously want to be a woman you should be allowed to'. I think she imagines she can decide who 'seriously' wants to be a woman, rather than having to accept anyone who wants to identify.

I didn’t read it like that at all, she’s basically saying do what you like and be who you want to be, basically TWAW.

She then goes on to say Israel plotted against Jeremy Corbyn, so I’m pretty sure I don’t need to take her very seriously.

Ok. I seriously want to be a member of the royal family, and a member of the college of surgeons.

So I should be allowed to be. Obviously. Because my wanting it and having sad feelings should be all that matters and the world should jump to make me happy, not mind about the impact on anyone else or reality or any other silly stuff like that.

It's this thing of supporting people's right to express themselves or present as they please, without thinking through how this impacts their legal or social status. I know she's an actress so I get why she would see it this way, but if she's going to criticise JKR she should first get her head round what JKR is actually arguing.

Since when did actors give anything any thought? Acting is a skill not an academic science 😁

To be fair on her I don't think she offered any opinion until she was grilled during this interview.

Yes I agree. There aren't many actors I look to for incisive analysis of current affairs, any more than I would the man next to me in the bus queue.

I'm always amazed at how much bandwidth is given to actors. As though being an actor means that you're possessing much intelligence. Jonathan Pie did a great thing on this in one of his earlier videos.

Plus MM has always been an especially 'look at meee' person, like an annoying child at a party.

Have a look at The Mermaids tweet thanking her for her support. 12th comment down is someone called Stephanie who obviously is a bit of a Jim Davidson fan and happened to be watching his YouTube channel.

Apparently Jim is a trans ally. Amongst joshing about his White Privilege breakfast and digs at BLM and ‘lefties’ he expressed his support for TransWomen and how brave they must be. It’s a bizarrely screwed up rant as per from Mr Davidson but I did chuckle to myself that someone had chosen to post it on a Mermaids thread. Maybe they’ll approach him to be a patron? Although to be fair I think his allegiances lie with TransWomen rather then Transmen (Oh what a surprise!)

I’m not linking to his video but it’s there on the thread (for now!) if you care to see the context of his comments it’s 10 minutes in (not 5 as the attached screen grab states) when he talks about the BLM and Pride marches in Brighton.

Can this get any more surreal?!

She describes herself as 'a massive dyke' and also tells the story of the Oxford don who tutored her when she was 17 who wore stockings under his trousers and called himself Agatha. “I thought he was going to tell me he was in love with me, but he said, ‘I want to be a woman. I was always meant to be a woman.’ I have had always that quality that people have thought they can talk to me and I think I had it then. He was a darling man and he was married but he wanted to be a woman . . . He said, ‘I want to cut this pole off.’”

As a 'massive dyke' I wonder how Miriam would have felt if he had declared himself to be in love with her? Would she have considered 'Agatha' as partner, or fallen in love with them? If not, why not Miriam? And should young lesbians today be able to reject partners like 'Agatha'? (It's notable that she misgenders this 'darling man' who was 'always meant to be a woman' throughout, revealing that she doesn't for a second think of him as female. Tut tut, such transphobia.)

What does that mean, though? How is that meant to work? It's not like you can go on a course and get your official License To Woman at the end of it.

Israel plotted against Corbyn on film and it was televised so in that instance Miriam can't be faulted. Doesn't make her right on the trans issue
