Not GC, but I'd be interested to hear what you think motivated GM to do the stuff she did. I mean she's rich, beautiful, Oxbridge educated, so what on earth did Epstein have to offer her? If she was simply in love with him, how did that work given he evidently preferred young girls to her. I'm intrigued by the psychology at work here.

@Kantastic

It's tailored to the audience too isn't it? Play up an abused manipulated woman angle on Maxwell for the Guardian readers, and inform the Telegraph that the upper-crust white man isn't as bad as everyone's making out.
Yes.

I’d imagine a very expensive specialist PR team is at work here.

Siablue · 04/07/2020 22:14

She must still have some very powerful supporters. Look at who she knew. Who went to her and Epstine’s parties. Someone very powerful doesn’t want this to come out and will spend money on it.

I just thought about the interesting coincidence of a thread wondering about Ghislaine Maxwell's motivations being posted here right around the time of that Guardian article, so I searched OP's username. Been very active on this forum today and maybe yesterday. Nothing earlier.

Hmm

Kantastic, I've been on Mumsnet mainly as a lurker for a year or so, but recently changed my name. Honestly, nothing sinister, but I'm not going to go into it here. I'll DM you.

The anorexia as toddler thing suggests some significant trauma IMO.

I have a friend whose mum walked out suddenly in the middle of the night when she was 4. She stopped eating entirely, was admitted to hospital for tube feeding for a while.

MotherMorph · 04/07/2020 22:47

I do think that women tend to play that role in sex trafficking, winning the trust of the victims. Rose West did the same.
Not entirely related but I watched a documentary about Fred and Rose West, which said he had been sexually abused by his mother....(Rose West had had an abusive childhood as well) so that's why they were attracted to each other.....

DioneTheDiabolist · 04/07/2020 22:52

Maybe that "audience" is Ghislaine.

Bill Clinton was connected to Epstein's charity work and spent a week with him in Africa.

Ghislaine went to Chelsea Clinton's wedding.

She has been photographed with Trump and recruited Virginia Roberts at Mar a Lago.

There were cameras everywhere in Epstein's houses. If any rich and influential man has been recorded it would ruin them.

DuDuDuLangaLangaBingBong · 04/07/2020 23:08

Wouldn’t be at all surprised if this were some kind of messaging to Ghislaine from ‘The Firm’ and associates.

I’m glad she’s been arrested, but I can’t see it going to trial. It’ll be a plea deal.

SuckingDieselFella · 04/07/2020 23:14

@RadandMad

She was living a life of luxury in hiding.

That's another thing I wonder about. She knew the FBI were going to go after Epstein's partners in crime, according to the report I saw on TV. Why on earth did she decide to stay in the US? Why not disappear into Antigua or wherever rich people hide out these days? It seems remarkably stupid for a supposedly intelligent woman.

Because she thought she could outwit them. And maybe she thought someone powerful would keep her safe.

The million dollar property she bought is called Tuckedaway.

Andrew is small fry compared with the other names in her little black book.

And it seems unlikely the establishment would protect him. He's pissed too many people off.

SuckingDieselFella · 04/07/2020 23:18

A more obvious point is that she's in prison.

Her media access will be limited.

Who will she rat on for that then? Apparently she's ruled out Andrew - Andrew notably said nothing incriminating about her... Maybe she's awaiting offers of help (financial and otherwise) and that's why she's sent out a message via a friend more along the lines of you help me and I'll help you.

Who is going to be the fall guy?

Or is she the one who does the time to cover for everyone else?

colouringindoors · 04/07/2020 23:26

v v v interesting

SuckingDieselFella · 04/07/2020 23:29

@RedToothBrush
She's had a year to get her deals set up.

It looks like Andrew is the fall guy. A minor royal nobody likes versus a household name politician? No contest.

SisterAgatha · 04/07/2020 23:36

I also agree that she was poor in comparison to her previous life. She had a mews property which is nothing to what she had when her father was embezzling. She wanted the lifestyle and she did what she did to keep it.

OvaHere · 04/07/2020 23:51

Who will she rat on for that then?

I have a feeling we could end up disappointed as it all gets wrapped up with her and Epstein being the main charges.

I think they may go after some of the women that were recruited by the pair to then recruit other girls for them.

We might also get one or two people of minor note - e.g an ex senator, some rich business guy that doesn't have much name recognition etc...

I will be genuinely shocked if really big and influential players end up taken down. It so rarely seems to work that way.

SisterAgatha · 05/07/2020 00:01

I don’t believe she will rat anyone out. If she does the house of cards come down and those protecting her cut off financial and legal support. Those poor women will never see justice.

DuDuDuLangaLangaBingBong · 05/07/2020 00:18

Who will she rat on for that then

I doubt she’ll need to rat anyone.
The trial will cost loads and take up shit loads of police and court time, so there is an incentive for the prosecution to bargain there.
They’ll get her to plead guilty to a slightly lesser charge and tuck her away in the remotest federal prison possible.

She’ll accept that rather than risk the ire of a 100 powerful men much like her father.

FannyCann · 05/07/2020 00:26

Why on earth did she decide to stay in the US?

According to the Fail, she has £16M in the bank, British, French and US passports. Supposedly her lawyers advised her to stay in the US and will argue that she had a chance to leave but did not. That will go in her favour with respect to getting bail.

🤷‍♀️ Who knows?

THRILLHO · 05/07/2020 00:31

She is part of the elite, untouchable. Fuck all will become of this. Is she really arrested? Literally they can say that she killed herself and fuck all will happen.

It will be Epstein 2.0, be a meme for a bit then be forgotten.

Did anyone see the spacey videos on YouTube? I mean seriously wtf was that all about. That seemed absolutely mental to me, nobody cared.

TehBewilderness · 05/07/2020 00:54

I think once you dissociate and nothing really matters there are no limits to the depravity. Particularly for people who live in a bubble of wealth and power.

TehBewilderness · 05/07/2020 00:56

Remember what happened to the woman who was set to testify on this sort of thing last time? Found hanging in the garage.
