Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Rapid onset woke intolerance

There is a funny article by Celia Walden in the Telegraph which describes how CV has temporarily silenced the usual herd of swooning fans who cluster around to breathlessly applaud and retweet every vacuous woke celeb pronouncement.

^In the first of a poignant three-part Instagram video detailing Sam Smith’s “quarantine meltdown” last week, the multi-platinum award-winning singer reassured fans that they were self-isolating and suffering from “a bit of a headache and allergies”.
For those who missed it, last year Smith announced “I am not male or female. I think I float somewhere in between”, and asked to be referred to with the pronouns “they/them”. not “he/him”. So you might need to bear with me on this next bit…
By part three of Smith’s video, they seemed to have deteriorated quite considerably, and was pictured sitting on the doorstep of their £12 million Hampstead home in floral pyjama bottoms, sobbing into their hands.
Just a month ago, this would have been a masterful post, perfectly choreographed for Smith’s ‘woke’ followers and entirely in keeping with the victimhood culture he has become a figurehead for. When “body issues” were the celebrity sympathy tool du jour, the 27-year-old Brit “bravely” spoke out about “battling” those, and was later hailed “a hero” for coming out either as non-binary or genderqueer (at the time, they weren’t really clear which)^

Er... so how did he manage to tweet?

ErrolTheDragon · 24/03/2020 14:56

Apropos of nothing, I very much like your name, C8H10N4O2Grin

Fabulous article, and so funny! I think Covid 19 is the sherpa that has brought us (society that is) to the final summit. We always knew there was one. It's over.

LambriniSocialist · 24/03/2020 15:21

Which part? The part where I thought he’d put on the weight that he’d previously lost or the part where I said I bet he uses it for sympathy (as he has done before, as per in the original article) before his next album?

Yeah, nice try, as if you don't know. The man is an arse IMO, largely because 8 feel that what he is pushing right now is sexist and regressive and harms women and men alike. But unsolicited personal comments about anyone's weight, especially the way you put it (oooh) are just uncalled for. But I'm sure you feel better for it, so crack right on Hmm

BritishHorrorStory · 24/03/2020 15:46

But unsolicited personal comments about anyone's weight, especially the way you put it (oooh) are just uncalled for.

I said: ‘I did think to myself, oooh’ which is a perfectly normal response (at least for me) when I’ve come across something I wasn’t expecting. I typed it out on here exactly as what I thought - in my mind - at the time of seeing that picture.

Bloomburger · 24/03/2020 15:57

I still can't get past their meaning of more than one.

Chipperfish · 24/03/2020 16:35

Its quite reassuring to see Nero metaphorically getting his violin confiscated, and generally being told 'nobody got time for that shite now'

Postspecific · 24/03/2020 16:44

@BuzzShitbagBobbly That was masterful word-play and I cannot let it go unchecked.

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 24/03/2020 16:47

This made me laugh (not about Sam Smith BTW).

I have heard tales of Canada having Oreo flavored creme eggs. Do these exist in the UK, and if so are they awful?

I saw these yesterday but I did not dare to try one...

TheClitterati · 24/03/2020 16:52

If no one takes our photo, do we ever really cry?

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 24/03/2020 17:11

Someone has to try one of the creme eggs of horror, for science.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/03/2020 17:29

The thing about Oreos ... despite their colour which implies they should be richly chocolaty, they don't really taste of much do they?
Try eating one with your eyes shut.

When people tried to raise a sexist stink about the new BBC adaptation of Malory Towers that premièred on iPlayer last night

WTF???!!! Could someone explain what the non problem is with this?

Binterested · 24/03/2020 17:37

He’s also a man but that is extremely offensive hate speech so ...

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 24/03/2020 17:38

Oreos mostly taste of that weird paste stuff that's in the middle, which I believe they rather laughably refer to as "cream".

testing987654321 · 24/03/2020 18:32

I read that as "Owens mostly taste ...."

I shuddered to think what you had been up to Kittens. I need a lie down.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 24/03/2020 18:38

Thank you so much for that mental image, and at a time when disinfecting products are in short supply too.

LambriniSocialist · 24/03/2020 18:52

He's fat. It's a description of reality. What's the problem?

He’s also a man but that is extremely offensive hate speech so ...

Referring to Sam Smith, who is male, as a man (a 'statement of reality') isn't a problem. Because bowing to his 'non-binary' shite (which is apparently because he likes romance and a block heel meaning he's not fully male) affects all of us, as it's regressive and sexist shite.

Referring to Sam Smith as 'fat' (a 'statement of reality') just because you don't like him and are looking for any way possible to stick the boot in a bit further is just being an arse hole.

I thought FWR was a bit better than personal attacks on people's weight tbh. Normally it's a good well thought out and backed up articulate argument round here.

endofthelinefinally · 24/03/2020 18:56

Oreos are revolting. Like crunchy mud pies. I don't know why people like them.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 24/03/2020 19:07

That was masterful word-play and I cannot let it go unchecked.

Thank you very much. I wish I could claim it as an original, but the author is some other very punny woman I can't recall to give due credit!

Binterested · 24/03/2020 19:08

Agree with you Lambrini. Just commenting on the fact that MNHQ could choose to delete me for the man comment but wouldn’t for the fat comment. Such is the state of discourse Confused

Gizmo79 · 24/03/2020 19:11

NRTFT but laughing so much right now!

WeetabixBananaHipsterFFS · 24/03/2020 21:13

Sam Smith has only got one halfway decent song, and it’s only halfway decent cos they half-inched it off Tom Petty.
