Rapid onset woke intolerance

There is a funny article by Celia Walden in the Telegraph which describes how CV has temporarily silenced the usual herd of swooning fans who cluster around to breathlessly applaud and retweet every vacuous woke celeb pronouncement.

^In the first of a poignant three-part Instagram video detailing Sam Smith’s “quarantine meltdown” last week, the multi-platinum award-winning singer reassured fans that they were self-isolating and suffering from “a bit of a headache and allergies”.
For those who missed it, last year Smith announced “I am not male or female. I think I float somewhere in between”, and asked to be referred to with the pronouns “they/them”. not “he/him”. So you might need to bear with me on this next bit…
By part three of Smith’s video, they seemed to have deteriorated quite considerably, and was pictured sitting on the doorstep of their £12 million Hampstead home in floral pyjama bottoms, sobbing into their hands.
Just a month ago, this would have been a masterful post, perfectly choreographed for Smith’s ‘woke’ followers and entirely in keeping with the victimhood culture he has become a figurehead for. When “body issues” were the celebrity sympathy tool du jour, the 27-year-old Brit “bravely” spoke out about “battling” those, and was later hailed “a hero” for coming out either as non-binary or genderqueer (at the time, they weren’t really clear which)^

Apart from anything else, Sam Smith must've set up a camera to film them self crying. Surely that would give anyone, pause for thought, irrespective of the current crisis

Sam might have just set it up for a wee video blog, then become overwrought. It's possible.

I still think he's being a whiny baby about nothing, though.

It’s ok to feel lonely and down, especially if you’re someone who isn’t good in your own company - fame and fortune (and even a well stocked toilet roll cupboard) doesn’t immunise you from that...

but why seek the vacuous attention of strangers if it isn’t really about reminding the tabloids you’re still there or getting talked about on Twitter? If they genuinely needed support, why not pick up the phone to a good friend, or their mum (or therapist?) and have a proper conversation, like a real person. In fact, ring your granny who’s probably frightened and bored, or start a WhatsApp group and share some memes. Like normal people do. I really can’t deal with celebrity attention seeking right now.

Maybe they could step up as a volunteer nhs worker to fill the time?

We all feel lonely and scared. I’m not alone but I am a single parent and it’s hard to wfh and home school and cook and clean and put a brave face on.

We are all having to draw on something I for one haven’t had much need for previously - courage and forbearance. It’s new to me. It’s probably new to a lot of us. Maybe celebs could shut up unless they can be modelling those particular traits - traits which were quite unfashionable until about a week ago.

wrongsideofhistorymyarsea I couldn't tell if that was satire

I don't have any opinions on Sam Smith's music, I wouldn't be able to name one of his songs if I tried. That he is an idiot is a deduction I have made from threads on here about his non binary attention seeking. Apart from that I have no opinions on him, I neither like or dislike him.

Somebody posted a picture of him up-thread. That picture was of an overweight man. Or fat, if you want to be blunt about it. Objective reality. I didn't impart any other meaning into the word "fat". I didn't imply it was hateful, ridiculous, ugly or anything else. That's all in your head. One of my favourite celebrities in the world is a beautiful, funny, incredible actor and writer named Melissa McCarthy. She is/was also overweight. She was fat. She's less so now. Her weight has made no difference to my regard for her.

If you want the "woke' to stop gas lighting you on what is a man or a woman, you need to apply that across the board and stop trying to prevent people describing what is objective reality. Otherwise, you are the arsehole.

Woah, disingenuity at its best.

Sam Smith's weight, whatever the 'objective reality' of it is, is absolutely irrelevant to anything. That poster posted that picture and made that comment because they felt like making a personal attack on him. Nothing more, nothing less. There was no need to then come on and start making 'objective' statements about his weight.

Sam Smith's sex, in the context of 'non-binary' and 'I'm not fully male because I like rom coms', is relevant to this discussion.

His weight, not so much. Couldn't give a fuck and so don't feel the need to comment on it, not even as part of an exercise in 'objective reality'.

Hahaha!

Normally it's a good well thought out and backed up articulate argument round here.

To be fair, the statements 'Oreos are revolting. Like crunchy mud pies' are pretty good, well backed up arguments!

The metal community has a higher calibre of musicians, they're the ones telling us everything will be okay, trying to help people affected by this, or doing mini-shows at home for people to watch, and generally being all round good eggs trying to cheer people up.

And then there's this idiot. He might feel lonely and scared, but talking to a real life person will help a hell of a lot more than trying to gain attention from sycophants. I've been talking to my mum a lot more since this really kicked off and drawing strength from my colleagues, cos we still have to go to work despite all this. (If I'm scared I can't imagine how NHS workers feel. Sad )

Also I suffer from hayfever, I'll make sure I have lots of tissues on me at all times!

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 25/03/2020 07:47

Stealth definitely satire but it's so hard to tell.

Their, their Grin

I saw what you did their!

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 27/03/2020 17:57

Out of interest I went and found a couple of Sam Smith songs and had a listen, and I don't think they has a wonderful voice no matter what register is being used. Once or twice they did hit the right note, but they seemed to have to look for it all over the place first, which to me is not particularly appealing in a singer.

B-, might do better after some singing lessons....
