Rapid onset woke intolerance

There is a funny article by Celia Walden in the Telegraph which describes how CV has temporarily silenced the usual herd of swooning fans who cluster around to breathlessly applaud and retweet every vacuous woke celeb pronouncement.

^In the first of a poignant three-part Instagram video detailing Sam Smith’s “quarantine meltdown” last week, the multi-platinum award-winning singer reassured fans that they were self-isolating and suffering from “a bit of a headache and allergies”.
For those who missed it, last year Smith announced “I am not male or female. I think I float somewhere in between”, and asked to be referred to with the pronouns “they/them”. not “he/him”. So you might need to bear with me on this next bit…
By part three of Smith’s video, they seemed to have deteriorated quite considerably, and was pictured sitting on the doorstep of their £12 million Hampstead home in floral pyjama bottoms, sobbing into their hands.
Just a month ago, this would have been a masterful post, perfectly choreographed for Smith’s ‘woke’ followers and entirely in keeping with the victimhood culture he has become a figurehead for. When “body issues” were the celebrity sympathy tool du jour, the 27-year-old Brit “bravely” spoke out about “battling” those, and was later hailed “a hero” for coming out either as non-binary or genderqueer (at the time, they weren’t really clear which)^

Piffle! This is my new word of the day, thanks whereyou Grin

Part of me feels that Sam is probably struggling with depression, and I feel kind of sorry for Sam, but then again, Sam subscribes to an ideology that makes Sam think liking make up makes Sam somehow a woman, so my sympathy runs dry there.

BovaryX · 24/03/2020 12:37

Apart from anything else, Sam Smith must've set up a camera to film them self crying. Surely that would give anyone, pause for thought, irrespective of the current crisis

Excellent point Datun That speaks volumes about the performative nature of this ersatz victimhood. It's woeful.

Have just had a look at the comments on Sam's instagram account. People are not impressed Hmm

BetsyM00 · 24/03/2020 12:53

I wish the Telegraph did share tokens. It looks like a really good piece.

Some kind soul has archived it: archive.vn/nEKkG

Lordfrontpaw · 24/03/2020 12:55

At least Sam didn't sing.

EmpressLangClegInChair · 24/03/2020 13:01

Prick News were calling Sam Smith a hero earlier. I think they were probably serious.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 24/03/2020 13:02

I can never quite figure out if Prick News have some sort of third columnist working from within to make them look as ridiculous as possible.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 24/03/2020 13:21

Every cloud, and all that.

Binterested · 24/03/2020 13:29

They is just a terrible singer.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 24/03/2020 13:32

Someone on the deleted thread told us we weren't allowed to say that and had to "admit" that they is an excellent singer. At which point I began to wonder if they-the-poster were in need of a nice earwax cleaning treatment.

Seriously though, is there any musician who everyone would agree is great? It's so funny when people get all "no you can't say X isn't brilliant that's just factually incorrect".

feelingverylazytoday · 24/03/2020 13:34

I think both woke culture and celeb culture are going to take a bit of a bashing.
The only celebs and public figures who will come out of it looking good are going to be those who use their social media in a socially responsible fashion, ie sharing accurate and important information rather than seeking attention and self publicity.

koshkatt · 24/03/2020 13:34

Sam Smith is an immature, attention seeking, self absorbed, whiny arsehole. Just like the rest of them

Oh yes.

Binterested · 24/03/2020 13:45

Oh did they ? Hahaha. Fortunately my ears are still my own and my opinions are still my own (just) and I can still say that Sam is a horrible singer. Even before the nonbinary balony I used to lurch for the radio when their godawful whining came on.

I do agree that it’s mostly a matter of opinion and we don’t all have to agree that, eg, Frank Sinatra is a great singer. I think we can probably go so far as to say though that Sam Smith ain’t no Sinatra Grin

also he just cannot sing and that is a stone cold fact

ItsLateHumpty · 24/03/2020 13:52

Yes. Me! I ID as amazing. And Great. And They Them Shem.

Also I can sing your socks off.

Pay my retainer, and you'll see how brilliant I am at ID Star I am Stupefying and Bald. Watch me ArchersGinGlitterball

Fab, thanks for that @BetsyM00. I never remember how to check if a page has been archived (I am a natural Luddite).

Did Covid kill trans activism?

ErrolTheDragon · 24/03/2020 14:07

I also have allergies right now. I'm taking allergy meds and hoping that if I have to venture out for food before the sneezing stops I won't worry the people around me too much.

Serious point there - if by bad fortune someone is an asymptomatic carrier is also a hay fever sufferer, that will spread the disease more than a cough. Hankies and elbow-crooks at the ready!

Now... was there anything else I need to add re the subject of the thread which isn't covered by 'don't be silly' or 'grow up'?

koshkatt · 24/03/2020 14:08

I am sure his weight gain will have something to do with being persecuted by feminists, Or something.

Mine is because it is creme egg season...dammit.

LambriniSocialist · 24/03/2020 14:13

He was “unaware” that he was being papped, and I did think to myself, ooh, the weights piled back on a bit, hasn’t it? Who wants a bet it will be mentioned again for sympathy before next album?

I'm no fan of Sam Smith, but this post is just plain fucking nasty.

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 24/03/2020 14:13

I have heard tales of Canada having Oreo flavored creme eggs. Do these exist in the UK, and if so are they awful?

BritishHorrorStory · 24/03/2020 14:30

I'm no fan of Sam Smith, but this post is just plain fucking nasty.

Which part? The part where I thought he’d put on the weight that he’d previously lost or the part where I said I bet he uses it for sympathy (as he has done before, as per in the original article) before his next album? Hmm

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 24/03/2020 14:38

The first time I saw that Sam Smith series of pics I assumed it was a clever piss-take.
