Gary Lineker onside!

I have my problems with that article, eg starts off making a point but it's juxtaposed by a lot of stuff about taking drugs in a retreat, and comes across slightly barking, but there we go
Safe to say GLineker has chosen his team!

At flippin' last! Grin

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 12/03/2020 13:41

Yay! Hope he will speak out more!

LangClegsOpinionIsNoted · 12/03/2020 13:43

I hope he says more too. Men listen to ex-footballers, and unfortunately no-one in power listens to anyone but men.

TinselAngel · 12/03/2020 13:45

All my years of fancying him, finally rewarded!

thereplycamefromanchorage · 12/03/2020 13:45

So pleased to see more people in the public eye beginning, tentatively, to express GC support.

zanahoria · 12/03/2020 13:52

just two words, a tap in of a comment

Its important too as he is at the BBC

Gaby Logan is a long time supporter too

Spotted Linacre at the National theatre last week in the audience of Rafe Spall's extraordinary monologue 'Death of England'.

One of the biggest laughs of the night was when Owen Jones was mentioned. No particular context. Just mentioning Owen Jones' name was funny to a metropolitan audience. Perhaps Linacre took note. Time to distance from the Guardian.

StarintheMorning · 12/03/2020 13:58

Always loved Gary, love him even more now!

RoyalCorgi · 12/03/2020 14:04

Wow, he took his time, but well done.

I wonder two things:

1 Will he get the same kind of abuse that other prominent celebrities like JK Rowling and Graham Linehan have received for speaking out?

2 Will his example encourage others to follow suit? After all, Lineker is both dead respectable and very famous, so you wonder if his example might spur others to find their voices.

teawamutu · 12/03/2020 14:06

Frances Barber, the actress, has been tweeting too.

Needmoresleep · 12/03/2020 14:08

(Sorry Gary for spelling your name wrong.)

I used to like him and Billy Bragg. Who knew that Gary would be the one defending women's rights and putting himself out there?

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 12/03/2020 14:15

I'm slightly suspicious that he has seen which way the wind is blowing, and isn't a natural champion of women.

Nevertheless, it is good that he has put a toe in the water and will no doubt encourage a few thousand others into the water.

Agreed. We've always known that many people agree, but were scared. They've been deliberately scared, had the frighteners put on them.

Hopefully, this is the beginning. And will become an avalanche.

ThinEndoftheWedge · 12/03/2020 14:18

Promising but a lot more would be helpful. Multiple female ex-athletes are far more vocal.

I’ll be rooting for him to do more.. come on Gary, we need you!!!!

MorrisZapp · 12/03/2020 14:18

This is my Portillo moment! I can't explain how happy this has made me. Feel like I can now go back to nourishing my humongous crush on him.

GO GARY

I once had a dream we ran away together 😳

Bad feminist, really bad.

littlbrowndog · 12/03/2020 14:28

He is pretty lush for an older guy.

Shallow me 🤦‍♀️

Gibbonsgibbonsgibbons · 12/03/2020 14:31

FINALLY! FootballFootballFootball

(I can’t see the appeal at all myself Confused)

FloralBunting · 12/03/2020 14:32

I don't care if he does see the way the wind is blowing. We need people to speak up, and as hard as it's been to be plugging away thanklessly at this - I will gladly watch and welcome all late comers.

Still, it is quite amusing seeing the beards underneath the tweet pouting.

What do incels call men like Garry again?

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 12/03/2020 14:39

I tend to agree floral. It's an important moment, and possibly a tipping point.

I'll take all the late majority climb-on-boarders I can. I'm just keeping hold of my cynicism about people's motivation for a while longer.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 12/03/2020 14:46

Is now the time to admit I have quite a huge crush on Harry The Owl?
I would really quite like to do things to him!
