Just saw this on Twitter. Should be interesting...

Thank you Glinner. I don't think any one of us could have done better. Very hard and appreciated.

littlbrowndog · 10/02/2020 23:16

All this assigning stuff of sex all over the bbc.

Do they think midwives are just shouting let this baby erm erm erm. Ok this one is a girl

Fucking bonkers

BoreOfWhabylon · 10/02/2020 23:17

I've never liked Sarah Smith's interviewing style. I like it even less having seen that.

Well done Graham.

LayAllYourLoveOnMe · 10/02/2020 23:17

Do I want to watch it or not? Sounds like the Germaine Greer a year ago.

Shehimthey · 10/02/2020 23:17

Just wanted to say thanks Graham - you tried but Sarah Smith got the bit between her teeth with the Nazi comment and... sigh. But you got some good points across and I could feel your frustration. Your ‘hinge moment’ statement was very powerful. Keep on keeping on but step back and chill if you need to. We all need to step up and speak out.

Kantastic · 10/02/2020 23:18

I suspect they had to be that awful to cover themselves for inviting him on at all. She actually let him make quite a few important points and without a TRA yelling nonsense to oppose him.

And I don't know, but I think a viewer would pick up that he's not at all coming from a hateful place. I don't think the impression of vulnerability will have harmed his message. He certainly didn't come off like some stereotypical bigot, despite the attempts to paint him that way.

Maybe I'm just far too optimistic in how I see things?

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 10/02/2020 23:19

That fucking woman was diabolical!

She did the same to every other interviewee, interrupted and cut them off.

We're not interested in what you think, you're supposed to facilitate the people you interview.

I felt really sorry for Linehan, he didn't stand a chance and for anyone who is unfamiliar with the topic or his views, he didn't do very well.

littlbrowndog · 10/02/2020 23:19

Yeah abstinthe

You kinda got to let the person you are interviewing speak so the audience can understand what the interview is about

That was like wtaf is going on here

derxa · 10/02/2020 23:19

Female academics who should know better have pretty much got me in a state of despair at present. Mary's all confused

TwitcherOfCurtains · 10/02/2020 23:19

I think he did well.

Thank you Graham.

AbsintheFriends · 10/02/2020 23:20

A thank you from me too. That interview was only going to go one way, but the dynamics speak for themselves.

She proved your point - discussion is not allowed (even when it appears to be.)

PlayYouLikeAShark · 10/02/2020 23:20

I get the impression if Glinner had an open conversation and wasn't hesitant on how he expressed himself i.e. didn't have to concentrate on what he was saying to the extent he was, he'd actually be hilarious in how he dismantled the arguments. The trepidation in expressing concern over the absurdity of the whole trans activism is jarring & for a comedy writer who is used to firing off the cuff & hitting the funny mark, this must be a source of extreme frustration.

I hate these badgering type of interviews, they serve little purpose and she was deliberately missing every point being made.

BoreOfWhabylon · 10/02/2020 23:20

Sarah Smith raised the Nazi comment That was all she wanted to talk about. It was pre-planned.

Imnobody4 · 10/02/2020 23:21

Well done Glinner. In the face of a hostile ( to put it mildly ) interviewer he got across some very clear points. I don't think I've ever seen such an unprofessional interview. Quite honestly I don't think she's done the TRA cause any favours.

HandsOffMyLangCleg · 10/02/2020 23:21

I have never seen a TRA subjected to such a confrontational interview.

Emily Maitlis asked the Tavi woman some really probing, evidence-based questions, yet Emily listened.

Imagine if Belcher or Willoughby had been interviewed in that way? There'd be an outcry.

Kantastic · 10/02/2020 23:22

I really think that "hinge moment" comment will have stuck in a lot of people's heads. It's stayed in mine and I was already very familiar with the thought! It was powerful when he said it.

HandsOffMyLangCleg · 10/02/2020 23:22

Sarah Smith raised the Nazi comment That was all she wanted to talk about. It was pre-planned.

Yy you called it.

littlbrowndog · 10/02/2020 23:24

Yeps.

When you interview a person you have to let the audience hear what the person you are interviewing says.

Not just chop em off again and again

It means you are a crap interviewer and don’t get to the heart of the interview.

Jeez Sarah Smith disappointing

Destinysdaughter · 10/02/2020 23:24

Just read comments on Twitter, sadly I don't think that interview did him any favours. Sad

I have never seen a TRA subjected to such a confrontational interview.

Now that would be interesting. They are far too frail though, apaz

Shehimthey · 10/02/2020 23:26

I thought she sounded pissed off from the start of the programme. She was mightily narked about the Edinburgh tram system in an earlier interview. I think she must have swallowed the Stonewall propaganda and thought she was interviewing some right-wing, fundamentalist, Christian bigot. I have admired her thus far but found that interview painful. WTF are Newsnight doing giving such an important issue a rushed and dismissive brush-off.?

FrogsFrogs · 10/02/2020 23:27

Glinner if you pop by thank you so much

When did the invite come? They don't invite the women you mentioned because they are

A. Not so famous
B. Not men
C. Too good at making a point

If you want to do it again (?) then you need a strategy like all the politicians etc. Talk to the women who have experience and therefore aren't invited any more :)

Also thank you and hope you ok that looked difficult to say the least.

(Yeah I know it's weird to address someone who prob won't read it but, had a few, and that looked hard).

HandsOffMyLangCleg · 10/02/2020 23:27

Yes Melroses you normally get Ruth or Holly doing a "soft voice". Piers is a pussycat next to Sarah.

HandsOffMyLangCleg · 10/02/2020 23:30

(Yeah I know it's weird to address someone who prob won't read it but, had a few, and that looked hard).

Glinner once DMd me on here Grin

Thanks Graham. You were set up, but you did far better than I ever could and you make a difference.

littlbrowndog · 10/02/2020 23:30

I wonder how Sarah Smith would interview a trans activist.

😏
