Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Are feminists getting played?

It makes me sad that feminists are spending so much time banging on about bathrooms in a world that has women still working for no pay, old women still more likely to be poor, surrogacy, underfunded maternity care, and poor support for carers. And other stuff.

Yes, the trans thing is annoying, but have you noticed how it always fires up before major elections? It's like Afghanistan in the 80s when the US provided just enough weapons to keep the war going so Russia would use all it's energy and get weak.

I feel like feminism is getting distracted with the trans stuff. At most, it should take up 10 percent of our feminist attention. But I rarely see feminism these days that isn't all about trans. Seriously. Do you think we're getting played here? Is trans really such a big deal?

The thread was never reinstated and the debate was successfully shut down

Perhaps because the facial and body hair of men is not a Women's Rights issue?

JackyHolyoake · 27/07/2019 16:16

Some men fail to grasp that feminism is, in part, about rejecting male domination of the discourse ... and when it comes to Women's Rights men have absolutely no place in any such discourse.

Feminism and Women's Rights [aka FWR] are about the experiences and voices of women.

LordRudolphVII · 27/07/2019 16:16

But many men are slaves to the patriarchy in some way too - look at the number of male suicides each week, undoubtedly influenced by the 'boys don't cry' mentality.

Men don't discuss these issues like women do and it certainly wouldn't be a bad thing if more men understood and fought against the oppressive elements of out society which affect both sexes.

In any case, it's the moderators who should make the call and in this case they seemed happy for the thread to stand until the reports started flooding in, at which point they closed it to investigate.

We all know why said posters rallied to get it removed, and it wasn't through an altruistic desire to assist the mumsnet moderation team.

PCohle · 27/07/2019 16:17

I'm (secretly) disappointed there's no flounce.

Why?

GirlDownUnder · 27/07/2019 16:19

Dunno, it'd make an awesome soundtrack to Blondie?!¿

Why you asking??

JackyHolyoake · 27/07/2019 16:20

I should have added to my last post above that 'woman' here is defined in accord with the UK Equality Act 2010:

woman is a female [as in natural sex] of any age.

usernameishistory · 27/07/2019 16:20

Lord are you actually proposing the women also take on mens rights in their womens rights forum?

That they do the mens work too?

JackyHolyoake · 27/07/2019 16:21

Men don't discuss these issues like women do and it certainly wouldn't be a bad thing if more men understood and fought against the oppressive elements of out society which affect both sexes.

So, create your own Dadsnet?

Men's issues are not women's issues.

PCohle · 27/07/2019 16:21

Because I think it's odd to be disappointed that you've failed to drive (another) woman away from discussing feminist issues here.

usernameishistory · 27/07/2019 16:23

any case, it's the moderators who should make the call and in this case they seemed happy for the thread to stand

Even i know MN doesnt work that way...

until the reports started flooding in, at which point they closed it to investigate

...thats how it works.

JackyHolyoake · 27/07/2019 16:24

LordRudolphVII

Why do you have this expectation that women should take on men's issues? Why do you have this expectation that women should make space for men?

That in itself is an expression of patriarchy: that women only exist to serve the desires of men.

You men need to sort out and challenge the patriarchy for yourselves, perhaps?

JackyHolyoake · 27/07/2019 16:26

Because I think it's odd to be disappointed that you've failed to drive (another) woman away from discussing feminist issues here.

Which feminist issues do you wish to discuss, PChole?

We are all ears.

Datun · 27/07/2019 16:27

So, create your own Dadsnet?

There is a dadsnet, right here. I mean you don't even have to log out ...

sackrifice · 27/07/2019 16:29

Men don't discuss these issues like women do and it certainly wouldn't be a bad thing if more men understood and fought against the oppressive elements of out society which affect both sexes

And, what has that to do with FWR?

sackrifice · 27/07/2019 16:30

Because I think it's odd to be disappointed that you've failed to drive (another) woman away from discussing feminist issues here

what feminist issues are you wanting to discuss?

sakura184 · 27/07/2019 16:32

However, it is very off-putting to women who are new to feminism when their views aren't just disagreed with, but often ridiculed

I don't think I'm new to feminism but I have been ridiculed and humiliated practically incessantly on here since I started posting regularly. I've been called disgusting, unintelligent, unhinged among other choice words. But disgusting was definitely my favorite

LordRudolphVII · 27/07/2019 16:32

My point is that if men rallied against the patriarchy it would help women.

PCohle · 27/07/2019 16:32

This one, the feminist issue that this thread is about.

If I wanted to discuss other feminist (or sorry, women's rights) issues I'd be raising them on threads about those topics - as I am in fact doing.

sakura184 · 27/07/2019 16:33

Which feminist issues do you wish to discuss, PChole?

Why do women still not get the point of the thread, it's so weird.

youkiddingme · 27/07/2019 16:33

Flounce. A word so feminine it conjurs up petticoats. Not stormed off in a huff. Used by a woman, against a woman, on a feminist board.

Am I being too touchy?

LordRudolphVII · 27/07/2019 16:34

Sakura, that's because you post blanket statements about entire classes of individuals and try and move the goalposts when called on it.

sakura184 · 27/07/2019 16:34

Yes I want to talk about this one too!

JackyHolyoake · 27/07/2019 16:35

My point is that if men rallied against the patriarchy it would help women.

So, off you go and do exactly that among your fellow men. Avoid any expectation that women should contribute to such an effort. We have enough to do defending ourselves against the horror that is patriarchy.

I look forward to being made aware of men's efforts to challenge the very system that delivers so much privilege to them.

sakura184 · 27/07/2019 16:36

Oh I'm sorry Lord "2 women murdered a week isn't many" Rudolph

sakura184 · 27/07/2019 16:38

Yes let it be noted that when I've been humiliated on here LordRudolphVII joins in with the pile on and the dickpanderers are fine with that.
Oh sorry, am I being too touchy?
