Alice Roberts - what the hell?

I can’t tell you how utterly disappointed I feel by her comments about Sex and reproduction not being binary. She knows the truth, what the hell is she doing? I’m even more upset by her than by Sarah Champion, she’s a Scientist ffs.

Ah yes, the twitter break ... somebody fetch the selling salts. Sometimes I feel I'm in a steampunk novel, 19th century tweeness combined with 21st century technology.

AlwaysComingHome · 19/06/2019 23:13

Have noticed this so many times now, and in a few different ways, but always the same pattern of deflection and obfuscation.

The reasoning goes like this: you think that women are just XX, right? But what about XO? And XXX? And XXXX? And XY? And XXXXX?

They hope you won’t notice the XY slipped in there.

realdoctor · 19/06/2019 23:14

sorry, meant to say 'smelling salts'

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 19/06/2019 23:15

She's just tweeted, "I'm taking a holiday from Twitter for a while. I've argued for reason, compassion and empathy in discussions about sex and gender. That's opened me up to more hate, bile and even misogyny than I've experienced before. I'm sad and shocked. Humans can be so much better than this."

No, you pretended to a bunch of scientists that there are more than two sexes, and got your ass handed to you.

AlwaysComingHome · 19/06/2019 23:15

Anyway she's now on a Twitter break.

Just for once I’d like somebody to take the Twitter break before they post something stupid.

GCAcademic · 19/06/2019 23:16

I've spent a bit of time at Birmingham uni recently and it's all gender neutral toilets (seats up, piss everywhere ) and aggressively woke, so I'm not surprised that she's toeing the party line. Very disappointing though.

I know someone who works there and she is really upset and angry at how unpleasant it's become for women.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 19/06/2019 23:16

Also, does she realise we can go back and see all the replies to her tweets?
It's lucky she didn't tweet TWAM or she'd really find out what misogyny looks like Hmm

littlbrowndog · 19/06/2019 23:18

Exactly.

You got called out for posting idiocy. Then had a break due to the horribles pointing out scientific facts 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

AnyFucker · 19/06/2019 23:19

Silly, misguided woman

Supposedly intelligent enough to know better < tut >

Walksitdrink · 19/06/2019 23:23

Disappointed with Alice. However I don't recognise the description of Birmingham as ultra woke and all gender neutral toilets. Every building I go in still has Male and female toilets. Lots of GC academics just as in any other Uni. Just people tend not to talk about it.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 19/06/2019 23:29

When I was combing back through her replies looking for this 'hate', I noticed Sharron Davies joining in the ass-handing-to, by the way Grin

hipsterfun · 19/06/2019 23:30

I've argued for reason, compassion and empathy in discussions about sex and gender.

Halo

That’s that then.

Lumene · 19/06/2019 23:30

”How I feel in myself has no bearing on what someone feels. If someone who looks like a man and has XY chromosomes tells me he feels female - I cannot tell her she is ‘wrong’. Would you?''

“How I feel in myself has no bearing on what someone feels. If someone who looks like a man and whose birth certificate says he is 50 tells me he feels he is a six year old girl - I cannot tell her she is ‘wrong’. Would you?''

LangCleg · 19/06/2019 23:31

Break = the new flounce.

Why do they all do a Twitter Flounce when the lessers talk back?

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 19/06/2019 23:32

Who knows, maybe Alice will go on her break and actually read up on the subject.

Remember when Dr McKinnon told Martina to go away and 'educate herself'? And she ended up finding out just how insane this shit is?!

AlwaysComingHome · 19/06/2019 23:32

I noticed Sharron joining in too. I think that’s when Alice realised she was no longer the best-loved celebrity on the thread, and could no longer rely on shaming people to win the argument.

GCAcademic · 19/06/2019 23:34

Oh, she's flounced? So much for the Professor of Public Engagement!

AlwaysComingHome · 19/06/2019 23:36

How I feel in myself has no bearing on what someone feels. If someone who looks like a man and has XY chromosomes tells me he feels female - I cannot tell her she is ‘wrong’. Would you?

The fact she used the phrase ‘tells me how he feels’ suggests she hasn’t thought this through.

Iusedtobeanicegirl · 19/06/2019 23:36

The two lots of toilets I've been in this month have either been gender neutral or 'female' but with signs everywhere saying if you stare at non binary or trans people using the toilets then it is harassment. Also had a couple of conversations with staff about the 'what gender do you identify as' when filling in evaluation forms at science lectures which have made me Hmm. But I'm glad that isn't the whole picture Walksitdrink.

1984in2019 · 19/06/2019 23:38

She’s made herself sound really thick with that statement upthread on men’s feelz

OccasionalKite · 19/06/2019 23:42

Time to say No.

Again.

Identify however you like, but women's facilities are for women and girls (human females) only.

Melroses · 19/06/2019 23:42

The fact she used the phrase ‘tells me how he feels’ suggests she hasn’t thought this through.

The whole twitter exchange was the same really. A bit disappointing, and a bit woolly.

TheHeathenOfSuburbia · 19/06/2019 23:48

Och, I think she's just trying to be nice and hasn't really thought things through.

And if you waft through woke academic and telly circles, know lots of lovely TW, and never meet a woman who's been in a prison or refuge, it must all seem like a lot of fuss over nothing that could all be sorted out with some peace and love etc.

AlwaysComingHome · 19/06/2019 23:57

That's opened me up to more hate, bile and even misogyny than I've experienced before. I'm sad and shocked.

Did anyone see hatred, bile or misogyny on that thread? These terms have utterly lost all meaning.

realdoctor · 19/06/2019 23:57

Ah yes, "empathy", heard that one before, too, from a politician. It's nice to be empathetic. But to be truly empathetic, you actually have to recognise the true nature of someone's distress. If that someone is distressed because they are unhappy with their sexed body, you have to recognise that sex is a reality, and that it is dimorphic. There are many, many trans people who understand that.
