Andre Patterson was sent to prison the day after his 17th birthday for shooting two people. He killed his cellmate, Kimani Muhammad, in December 2016

Patterson, now 29, has another 32 years in prison to serve and has now been sent to women's prison.

It's interesting firstly that in the US someone so young can have the 'key thrown away' at such a young age, and not surprising you might want out of your current cage and into a different one.

So a fully intact Male with an extremely violent past is put in a womens prison.....I hope the relatives of the female inmates are fully aware & campaign to get him removed. Just wrong on so many levels.

BartholinsSister · 04/04/2019 15:10

They'll rip him to shreds won't they?

BertrandRussell · 04/04/2019 15:13

Presumably a prisoner who killed his cell mate will be in isolation?

Barracker · 04/04/2019 15:55

You'd hope so, Bertrand, but a system that can put a man who murdered his cellmate by strangling him in with women in the first place doesn't strike me as one with any degree of reliable judgement.

This stuff is terrifying.

eddiemairswife · 04/04/2019 16:00

I always find the American 'justice' system bewildering.

DpWm · 04/04/2019 17:12

Anyone with more than 2 braincells knows this person is not trans. That they're taking the piss. Wtf.

GrinitchSpinach · 04/04/2019 17:52

Reason #1,356,728 why I despair for my country. By rights this should be the American Karen White moment, but instead this will get one night's coverage by the local TV news, and then disappear from the radar. Even if this person manages to kill a female inmate, I'd be shocked if it attracted publicity beyond the local media or possibly, possibly, very right wing national sources (which are immediately discounted by those on the left and many in the middle).

Sadly I think the 2020 Olympics and the general fairness in sports issue will gain much more national traction in America than the actual lives and safety of vulnerable women. I would be thrilled to be proven wrong...

MNSDKHheroines · 04/04/2019 17:56

Maybe @PiersMorgan will tweet about it?

PalatineUvula · 04/04/2019 18:04

It is curious they don't mention the 'murdering your cellmate' thing in the reporting

Orange is the New Black has a LOT to answer for here! SadAngry

“We are glad that Janiah has been moved to a prison where she has a chance to be safe,” Uptown People’s Law Center Executive Director Alan Mills said in a statement. “We look forward to the day when every prisoner can feel safe in all of Illinois’ prisons.”

Well clearly that day won't happen any time soon for incarcerated women in Illinois as a direct result of moving this violent inmate murderer into a woman's prison. You couldn't even make this shit up.

MenuPlant · 04/04/2019 19:06

I find this really interesting.

There is no mention in that article of any consideration of or protection for the female inmates. The entire focus in on the safety of this individual.

This is in line with the approach seen on the Equalities Impact Assessment carried out by the Scottish prison service that was circulating, where there were notes in Gender Reassignment, and Age (which was odd) and then under Sex it had "N/A". Someone actually filled in a form that was considering whether to put intact males in womens prisons, including ones who had been convicted of sex offences, and decided there was nothing even to think about when it came to the protected characteristic of Sex. I mean it's gobsmacking.

These types of decisions I think show up that there is a hierarchy, with men (dicky) at the top and women (cunty) underneath. Transwomen do not get treated as women. As we can see from these decisions, (cunty) womens needs are not considered at all. These decisions are about "not men".

The dwelling on sexual assaults etc. No-one should be sexually assaulted in prison. But my understanding of male behaviour in prison / etc is that many men are at risk. Gay men, pretty men, young men, men who have mental health issues etc. Men seem to have an urgent need (generalisation) to form hierarchies and also to sexually dominate. When women are removed from the picture, they enact these behaviours on each other. This is hardly a secret.

My solution would be:

Look urgently into making prisons safe / as safe as possible and not see sex offences in prisons as a fact of life
Look to protect all sorts of men who are at risk from other men in prison. There are a lot of vulnerable men having an awful time. It's not OK
Transwomen who have breasts / bottom surgery etc I can see they are at elevated risk and must be kept safe. The answer is to find a way to do that, that does NOT mean putting them with the women. They are not women. Even those who don't care about women in prison being attacked would surely baulk at risk of pregnancy. No-one wants incarcerated women getting pregnant whether through consensual sex or rape. So even the nastiest hard-linest "prison isn't a holiday camp" types would veto on these grounds. Why is no-one talking about this? That's before you get to the difference in crimes committed / size differential and all the rest of it

WHY are women just not considered AT ALL in this? We all knew it was still a world where women were second class but this writes it in massive letters on the side of a mountain or something.

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 20/02/2020 06:46

the unsurprising update to this is that Andre/Janiah has put his penis into the vaginas of one or more women in prison.

One of those women has accused him of rape.

The prison authorities told her they did not believe her and that the intercourse was consensual. She was given a 'major' discipline infraction for filing the rape complaint and transferred to a different prison.

Now she has filed a lawsuit against prison warden & officers for covering up the rape to protect their policy of allowing men in women's prisons.

MangoFeverDream · 20/02/2020 07:16

But ... but .... this (almost) never happens!

Pathetic. Our concerns and fears are never taken seriously and then the very things we warn about happen. Getting serious Cassandra vibes here

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 20/02/2020 07:24

Obviously it didn't happen because it's transphobic to say that trans people can be rapists. Even when they have convictions for murder and arson, we should just assume the best of people, because being trans magically renders previously incredibly dangerous men fluffy puppies.

Danglingmod · 20/02/2020 07:30

Jesus F Christ.

The world is literally insane.

refusetobeasheep · 20/02/2020 07:35

Up another level: we're used to being called transphobic when saying woman = adult human female, but now it's transphobic to say a trans woman raped you?!

Bovneydazzlers · 20/02/2020 07:40

So - Wait - there was no punishment for the trans woman who at absolute best - used her position in a women’s prison to have sex with an inmate - they got to stay?! At worst; more likely; she raped the individual; who had been punished not supported?!

Even Lisa Nandy couldn’t support this. Oh wait yes she would do; because she’s friends with one vulnerable trans girl in her area so trans woman equals woman.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 20/02/2020 07:56

Even “The Karen White moment” wasn’t the “Karen White moment” here. Look at the attitude from potential Labour leaders.

Lordfrontpaw · 20/02/2020 08:09

In the US? I hope she sues for billions (and the other victims). And the idiots who decided that this was a good idea.

Stupid stupid people.

ScrimshawTheSecond · 20/02/2020 08:24

Holy fuck. That poor woman. That sounds like the state enabling rape, if not consensual. And punishing the woman who says she was raped. Unbelievable.

Danceswithwarthogs · 20/02/2020 08:39

So society’s pitiful record on taking rape seriously spills into the prison system.... “it was consensual, she changed her mind/was embarrassed afterwards, the injuries are because she asked for it rough, she didn’t fight or scream... etc etc...

It’s not just holidays in Cyprus or Spanish festivals where traumatised women are not believed... might as well cut out the middle man, lock vulnerable women in confined spaces with violent penis-owners and then look the other way.

Disgusting

Danceswithwarthogs · 20/02/2020 08:45

And yet think of the public outcry when they considered releasing John Worboys,

either people aren’t aware of the risks to female inmates... or think in some way they’re in prison so they don’t matter/deserve it?

PermanentTemporary · 20/02/2020 08:47

Jesus Christ. So there have been several complaints about sexual assault as well as the rape allegation but NBD as aaaaall the complaints are transphobia and not real and any sexual contact that takes place is totes consensual because everyone knows that healthy functional relationships are ten a penny in prison.

Also the women who make these allegations are totes lying bitches, admire, looking for the main chance? How do I know that? Well, they're in prison, they're no Angel's, know what I'm saying? Women, cant believe a word they say about sex, SORRY, bad women, can't believe a word they say about sex. Take my ex-wife, after all, half the town already has HAHAHA

Fucking hell.
