I find this really interesting.
There is no mention in that article of any consideration of or protection for the female inmates. The entire focus in on the safety of this individual.
This is in line with the approach seen on the Equalities Impact Assessment carried out by the Scottish prison service that was circulating, where there were notes in Gender Reassignment, and Age (which was odd) and then under Sex it had "N/A". Someone actually filled in a form that was considering whether to put intact males in womens prisons, including ones who had been convicted of sex offences, and decided there was nothing even to think about when it came to the protected characteristic of Sex. I mean it's gobsmacking.
These types of decisions I think show up that there is a hierarchy, with men (dicky) at the top and women (cunty) underneath. Transwomen do not get treated as women. As we can see from these decisions, (cunty) womens needs are not considered at all. These decisions are about "not men".
The dwelling on sexual assaults etc. No-one should be sexually assaulted in prison. But my understanding of male behaviour in prison / etc is that many men are at risk. Gay men, pretty men, young men, men who have mental health issues etc. Men seem to have an urgent need (generalisation) to form hierarchies and also to sexually dominate. When women are removed from the picture, they enact these behaviours on each other. This is hardly a secret.
My solution would be:
Look urgently into making prisons safe / as safe as possible and not see sex offences in prisons as a fact of life
Look to protect all sorts of men who are at risk from other men in prison. There are a lot of vulnerable men having an awful time. It's not OK
Transwomen who have breasts / bottom surgery etc I can see they are at elevated risk and must be kept safe. The answer is to find a way to do that, that does NOT mean putting them with the women. They are not women. Even those who don't care about women in prison being attacked would surely baulk at risk of pregnancy. No-one wants incarcerated women getting pregnant whether through consensual sex or rape. So even the nastiest hard-linest "prison isn't a holiday camp" types would veto on these grounds. Why is no-one talking about this? That's before you get to the difference in crimes committed / size differential and all the rest of it
WHY are women just not considered AT ALL in this? We all knew it was still a world where women were second class but this writes it in massive letters on the side of a mountain or something.
