Twitter telling the police what they think again. Mermaids training now.

Once again twitter is letting the police know what they think. This time it’s Mermaids training. Why they need it at all, and why it should be taking so long is beyond me. Somebody should ask them.

We really do need to organise 'Women and Girls Awareness Training'.
I'd start with schools.
Women and Girls Teams, going into schools, and delivering views of the world and life, from a female biology point of view. To all pupils, girls and boys.

Thingybob · 12/02/2019 23:46

They've still got the bloody jelly babies!

littlbrowndog · 12/02/2019 23:47

Wow twitter replies on this
Not going well tbf

OvaHere · 13/02/2019 00:15

Not a single positive comment in that twitter thread. The police are really fucking up.

I wonder if an enterprising journo could find out just how much tax payer money is going towards 3 day training courses in 1950s sexist stereotype propaganda.

theOtherPamAyres · 13/02/2019 00:23

I gather that this is a Mermaids training session organised by Merseyside Council and to which members of staff (probably LGBT representatives from within the Merseyside Police ) and 'partners' were invited.

ACC Julie Cooke, the lead Chief Police Officer on LGBT matters, on behalf of the National Police Chiefs Council, took a high profile role - opening address and so forth.

It's impossible to see how Mermaids training (over three flippin' days) has any relevance whatsoever to police operations. Front-line officers require robust information on handling trans suspects and witnesses, as well as how to mediate hate incidents.

Mermaids can't help with any of that.

It's just bizarre.

ALittleBitofVitriol · 13/02/2019 00:28

I can't believe they still use that slide. Even after all the internet mocking. That slide peaks almost everyone who sees it.
Not bright.

OldCrone · 13/02/2019 00:29

I thought Mermaids was all about 'supporting transgender children'. Why do the police need training by Mermaids?

And 3 days of it? What on earth do they need to cover that takes 3 days?

lottielady · 13/02/2019 00:33

How much is Mermaids making out of this ‘training provision’?

nettie434 · 13/02/2019 00:45

True ALittleBitofVitriol. The good thing is that despite all the protests saying that recording of the Mermaid training was inaccurate, we have confirmation that they really do the Barbie/GI Joe stuff.

Jenny17 · 13/02/2019 00:52

And 3 days of it? What on earth do they need to cover that takes 3 days?
Indoctrination takes time.

Caucho · 13/02/2019 02:03

The name Mermaids itself is horrible and not sure how it’s supposed to envoke enthusiasm or positivity. Portrays people as freaks but good given the love and money the charity attracts what do I know?

AnotherBewilderedQuoll · 13/02/2019 05:35

Mermaids scale, pink person = woman, to brown person = man, because transactivists never tire of finding ever more racist ways to be sexist.

Oh look, it's the racist trope of dark skin being masculine. How innovative and "inclusive". I mean, it's not like white men have used this concept to dehumanise black women for a few hundred years or anything. Or that even today, it's typical for racist, misogynists to slur black women by describing them as masculine, or even more blatantly, accuse them of actually being men-(see treatment of Serena Williams).
Oh wait..Yes, it is exactly like that.

Does Mermaids not have any staff who aren't middle class white? Or does SG just not listen to them?

Katvonfelttipeyebrows · 13/02/2019 06:04

We need a pack for the police like we had a pack for schools...

Floisme · 13/02/2019 06:44

The first time I saw that Mermaids chart I thought it was a piss take. No-one, I thought, no-one could possibly be that stupid.

Lemoncakestrudel · 13/02/2019 06:47

I found the article in the BMJ very interesting

GerryblewuptheER · 13/02/2019 07:11

Every time I see that slide I want to destroy it in acid or something.

Never is so.much bollocks illustrated at any one time.

I dont know whether to be angry or whether to admire their ability to give the talk with a straight face. I'd have cracked long ago

spreadingchestnuttree · 13/02/2019 07:17

Do you know what? I feel feel really positive after reading the Twitter comments. Normal people see right through this crap.

RockyFlintstone · 13/02/2019 07:18

I CANNOT believe they are still using that Barbie/GI Joe slide.

It's just so fucking offensive!

My eyes!!!

RockyFlintstone · 13/02/2019 07:24

I always try and imagine the thought process of whoever it was and sat there and designed that slide....

'OK, so what is the most feminine - a tiny waist, big boobs, long hair, pink, and then as your waist gets larger you become less feminine and your hair gets shorter'.

And what is with the black and brown up the other end?

I would be interested to see what someone like Meghan BodyPosiPanda, from Instagram thinks of this. She is a beautiful mixed race overweight woman who is doing lots for body positivity, but she is woker than woke and has fully brought into the trans ideology. I think her head might explode at this! At the very least, she would call it... problematic Smile

Ereshkigal · 13/02/2019 07:25

And the police are inanely burbling about how wonderful it is.

andyoldlabour · 13/02/2019 08:05

"Do you know what? I feel feel really positive after reading the Twitter comments. Normal people see right through this crap."

Exactly, the more people becoming aware of this the better. There were comments about Harry the Owl and the woman who spent 7 hours locked up in a cell.
So many people are going to be peak transed by this rubbish.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 13/02/2019 08:14

I liked this one, I'm defintitely stealing it:

#LGB activism: Your kids are fine just the way they are. You don't have to be concerned if they're gender non-conforming.

#LGBTQ activism: Your children are defective & we're here to correct their abnormalities with drugs, clothing, accessories & multiple surgeries.

hackmum · 13/02/2019 08:21

I was very encouraged to see this comment from the novelist Lissa Evans:

"This is utter nonsense, and an obscene use of public money."

Really good to see another high-profile person speaking out. OK, she's not that high-profile yet, but she's getting there. Latest novel, Old Baggage (which is brilliant, by the way), was number one on the Sunday Times bestseller list for a few weeks.

Bowlofbabelfish · 13/02/2019 08:24

The comments are heartening though.

McTufty · 13/02/2019 08:29

Please tell me the Mermaids segment was part of 3 days general training and not 3 full days by Mermaids?

I am honestly starting to think that someone very pro-trans ideology has something big on the government. I can’t see any other way that this offensive bullshit is so widely accepted by our public services.

Give training on trans issues, inclusivity etc by all means, but not from someone as partisan and batshit as Mermaids.
