Twitter telling the police what they think again. Mermaids training now.

Once again twitter is letting the police know what they think. This time it’s Mermaids training. Why they need it at all, and why it should be taking so long is beyond me. Somebody should ask them.

It's so ridiculous, I'm still finding it difficult to believe that this is happening in the 21st century.
Grade 1 woman = Barbie in a pink dress. Really.

Mermaids and Stonewall aren't accountable to anyone, but local councils and police are. They are promoting horribly sexist and homophobic material - how is this acceptable?

TerfectlyImperfect · 13/02/2019 08:40

I’ve got RSI after spending quite some time liking the comments on that thread.

Sarahconnor1 · 13/02/2019 09:07

Please tell me the Mermaids segment was part of 3 days general training and not 3 full days by Mermaids?

It looks like there were a series of mermaid training events. This first in December.

littlbrowndog · 13/02/2019 09:14

Looking through that twitter feed from the sarge. Totally promoting mermaids

littlbrowndog · 13/02/2019 09:14

All the way

Thingybob · 13/02/2019 09:17

Please tell me the Mermaids segment was part of 3 days general training and not 3 full days by Mermaids?

I read it as several training sessions given by Mermaids over 3 days but assumed it was repeated sessions so either 3 identical full training days or 6 identical half days. An employee of the Merseyside Police (or a partner organizations) would only attend once but by providing different sessions they would be able to train the majority of staff over those 3 days.

Thingybob · 13/02/2019 09:19

Thankyou Sarahconnor, I stand corrected

hackmum · 13/02/2019 09:26

Janice Turner also has a good thread going on this:

AbsintheFriends · 13/02/2019 09:34

Good to see Laura Dodsworth the vulva photographer calling this out as 'regressive, sexist nonsense' on the Janice Turner thread too.

AncientLights · 13/02/2019 09:40

That line about 'your gender is who you go to bed as'- I don't go to bed as a woman, I do the stuff both sexes (yes there are only 2) do like washing, brushing teeth etc etc. I sleep in whatever is comfortable, not sexy lacy strappy gowns. In short, I go to bed as a human. And wake up as one too.

littlbrowndog · 13/02/2019 09:44

The same police hosted a mermaids Xmas party

Yet on news this morning police were saying there wasn’t enough police to go to incidents safely and 79% of police they felt anxious and stressed
Yet police arrest and question people for what is being said on twitter
yet caro can be doxxed and threatened.
Nothing for her

silentcrow · 13/02/2019 09:46

I was very encouraged to see this comment from the novelist Lissa Evans:

Hackmum so was I! I think she's the first children's novelist to have said anything (iirc she won the Blue Peter prize last year), and that crowd are worker than woke to the point of promoting Mermaids. There is a poet too, who I really admire, she's been a lone voice in the industry for ages. But Lissa is the first novelist that I know of to be even slightly critical. I am desperately hoping this gives others strength - purchasing has become rather difficult lately with publishers and certain authors trying to gobble up the woke cookies market.

andyoldlabour · 13/02/2019 09:52

This article rightly scrutinises and criticises the way in which Mermaids are able to influence policy and public organisations.

4thwavenow.com/2017/10/21/should-mermaids-be-permitted-to-influence-uk-public-policy-on-trans-kids/

Thingybob · 13/02/2019 09:52

I've only just looked through Sgt Christian Owens twitter feed. He certainly has a close links with Mermaids almost like their own police officer.

AbsintheFriends · 13/02/2019 09:54

Yes, it's really courageous of Lissa Evans (who is an excellent novelist - can wholeheartedly recommend Crooked Heart as well as Old Baggage.) The danger is that if authors get on the TRA radar they'll just wake up to a slew of one star amazon reviews, which will decimate a book's ratings and have a long term effect on industry buyers picking up future books. Hopefully her success with Old Baggage has given her a bit more power.

terryleather · 13/02/2019 10:00

But Lissa is the first novelist that I know of to be even slightly critical.

I think Jane Harris who wrote Gillespie and I is also GC.

Mermaids are offering eight training events to Merseyside police.

www.lcvs.org.uk/events/mermaids-cpd-event/

I'll just include the text here.

Mermaids CPD Event
Mermaids is a registered charity, passionate about supporting children, young people, and their families to achieve a happier life in the face of great adversity. They work to raise awareness about gender nonconformity in children and young people amongst professionals and the general public. They campaign for the recognition of gender dysphoria in young people and lobby for improvements in professional services.

Mermaids has won a number of awards over the last few years and has recently worked on the production of Butterfly – created for television by BAFTA award-winning screenwriter Tony Marchant. Butterfly is a heartfelt and sensitive drama about the complex relationship between parents, and their division in opinion over how to support Max, their youngest child who, from a young age, has identified as a girl but has tried to suppress these feelings.

Mermaids are working together with Merseyside Police to educate and support officers and staff to better understand transgender, non-binary and gender non-conformity in order to more effectively serve our communities.

A number of events are being held and are supported by ACC Julie Cooke as the NPCC Lead for LGBT, Merseyside Police’s local LGBT Network and the Community Engagement Unit.

Eight sessions are available to Merseyside Police staff and valued partners. There is no cost to attend but they ask that you attend, participate and share the learning with colleagues. After the event Mermaids will make contact and provide some support resources and also request some feedback. Please share these effectively and support Mermaids in their charitable aims. www.mermaidsuk.org.uk/

This might explain the link to Mermaids.
mobile.twitter.com/SportsMediaLGBT/status/1092763025646465025

Although in his thirties when he transitioned he would have been too old for Mermaids' 'support'.

Threewheeler1 · 13/02/2019 10:16

Actual thought police training.
Terrifying.

RockyFlintstone · 13/02/2019 10:17

'Gender is who you go to bed as'.

How the fucking fuck do you 'go to bed as a woman' if you have a cock and balls?

Do they mean you just lie back and think of England?

Argh, I just cant even with this absolute horseshit.

Popchyk · 13/02/2019 10:23

They are still going with the Barbie/GI Joe thing. Of course they are.

BECAUSE THEY HAVEN'T GOT ANYTHING ELSE.

The whole ideology is based on risible damaging stereotypes associated with sex roles.

OldCrone · 13/02/2019 10:36

How the fucking fuck do you 'go to bed as a woman' if you have a cock and balls?

I think you just slip on a silky, lacy negligee.

theOtherPamAyres · 13/02/2019 10:39

I remember the thread about the Trans Conference where some mumsnetters observed and took notes.

There was a discussion on the importance of using LGBT networks and strategically placed trans allies in public services (particularly schools) to promote pro-trans training providers.

This is a very good example of that strategy in action.

Popchyk · 13/02/2019 10:55

Why is a children's charity even training the police? What for?

Does Teenage Cancer Trust give eight training sessions to the police?
Does The Princes Trust train the police?
Does Save the Children train the police?
Does Anorexia and Bulimia Care train the police?

The question I have is which other lobby groups, apart from Mermaids, are training the police?

And if it is Mermaids that is the only lobby group training the police, then why is there an exception for Mermaids?

Oh, and where do officers get time to attend all this training?

Popchyk · 13/02/2019 11:32

This is timely from the BBC today. First story on the website.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-47212662

Nearly 90% of police officers feel that there is not enough time to do their job properly.

But Merseyside officers seem to have plenty of time to spare.
