That looks very positive to me?

KenDoddsDadsDogsDead18 · 09/02/2019 23:39

Looks good! Can't wait to see page 2. Glad to see a story like this getting front page position. Hopefully this means lots of discussion on the various radio & tv politics shows tomorrow.

Datun · 09/02/2019 23:40

I'm tired and its been a LONG day.

Thank you, Red Brew (cocoa)

RedToothBrush · 09/02/2019 23:40

You have to wonder why they didn’t think of this before really

Cost.

Then maybe they realised it'd be more expensive to deal with compensation claims...

Thanks titchy I can read that.
Yes common sense prevails

OccasionalKite · 09/02/2019 23:41

A transgender MTF wing, would be the sensible answer.

In which prison estate, though?

OlennasWimple · 09/02/2019 23:41

I would suggest that the growing numbers make this both feasible and desirable

RedToothBrush · 09/02/2019 23:42

I expect there will be more about Phillip Green tbh, but I think this story fits in with that in the sense that its about voiceless women.

^^This.

There are approximately 85,000 men in prison, of which about 12-14,000 are sex offenders.

If saying a few magic words is going to get you transferred to a female prison, I can't imagine why every single one of them wouldn't do it.

OlennasWimple · 09/02/2019 23:44

In which prison estate, though

I don't much care which estate they are in, provided that there is sufficient protection for the rest of the population (managed by segregated recreation time, for example, which would be normal practice anyway); that there are the appropriate facilities in the estate to support all the prisoners and their various needs; and prison staff are not required to search different sexed prisoners against their will (both the staff and prisoner's will, I mean - it's important both ways)

Redshoeblueshoe · 09/02/2019 23:45

It's really not so difficult.
All we want to do is protect girls and women.
Let's keep single sex toilets, and disabled toilets, and have some gender neutral ones too.
Same for changing rooms
And sports
Blimey are things looking up ?

Iused2BanOptimist · 09/02/2019 23:45

"Options now under consideration " ....

"A number of high risk trans inmates have already been moved back to men's prisons"...

Devil will be in the detail.

Anyway let's hope Huntley is among them.

OlennasWimple · 09/02/2019 23:45

Psst - think that was meant for the Westminstenders thread Red Smile

RedToothBrush · 09/02/2019 23:49

Also chatter on twitter about the Sunday Times having a story involving Gires...

Gires @giresuk
On 8th February, Nicholas Hellen, Assistant Editor (Social Affairs), The Sunday Times, again contacted GIRES. Whilst we clearly cannot comment on individual cases, see our response to the enquiry from the Sunday Times: Gires Response
@Mermaids_Gender

In reference to detransition rates.

They are 'considering' this as an option. Call me cynical, but I ain't holding my breath - it'll have to go out for consultancy among stakeholders.

RedToothBrush · 09/02/2019 23:51

Nope. Meant this one. Can't have two stories about women's voices on Sunday morning TV now can we? Philip Green is more of a tabloid fodder type story too where everyone can call for him to be stripped of his knighthood and give themselves a pat on the back for doing so.

(me cynical? Never)

I agree Weezol. But now they're under scrutiny. Both from women and the press. Plus they are now going to have to do an equality impact assessment.

They're more accountable.

They can't afford, after this, another Karen White.

Lysistrataknowsherstuff · 10/02/2019 00:13

Call me cynical, but I can't help but think that if trans women don't get to go to a women's prison, there'll be a hell of a lot fewer sex offenders transitioning.

FactsAreNotMean · 10/02/2019 00:20

a convicted sex offender who retains her male genitalia

Her male genitalia...in a way I appreciate that they've written it as explicitly as that as I suspect it will make a few people raise their eyebrows

Redshoeblueshoe · 10/02/2019 00:24

Her male genitalia
Ha ha ha ha ha

Datun · 10/02/2019 00:26

The change has become more urgent after officials forecast that numbers of trans or non-binary prisoners in England and Wales could rise to 1,000, up from 139 last year. There are about 4,000 biological women in prison.

This is almost word for word exactly what the women on here were saying two years ago.

Honestly. Two short planks.

OrchidInTheSun · 10/02/2019 00:27

I very much expect that will be the case Lysistrata. That was in the original evidence given to the WEC by the prison officers association wasn't it? That many male prisoners would identify as trans for reasons that have nothing to do with dysphoria. I think that applies to quite a lot of men outside of prison too

RedToothBrush · 10/02/2019 00:28

And the detransition story.

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/015f461c-2c9e-11e9-af5a-20917663f412
Fifty trans people tell therapist of regrets

A psychotherapist who was told by a university that it could be “politically incorrect” to study people who regret changing gender has been approached by 50 people who want to reverse their transition.

James Caspian, 59, who was refused permission to research detransitioning at Bath Spa University, says rising numbers presenting with gender dysphoria have been too readily labelled as trans.

Sorry not got a share token for it.

Gires did not seem happy that someone wanted to do research. So they just quoted old research. Cos research is only good if it says what you like.
