A new slant on feminism from PETA.

OP posts:

Hmm

sackrifice · 05/12/2018 18:21

Not that new, Carol J Adams has been banging on about this for decades.

ErrolTheDragon · 05/12/2018 18:22

Hm, trying to analyse sexism wrt farmed animals could open up a whole can of worms. Well, maybe not worms...

SylvanianFrenemies · 05/12/2018 18:24

PETA can't lecture anyone on feminism. We've seen the "I'd rather go naked than wear fur" shoots, and the naked woman on a plate.

They are always coming up with ridiculous bullshit to generate headlines, despite it being a total turn off. They had a campaign to get a town called "Wool" to change the name to "Vegan Wool" - just makes them look like out of touch cranks.

grasspigeons · 05/12/2018 18:24

strangely enough, just after I had my babies , I switched to small eggs from extra large and got a bit odd about buying milk. but I wasn't really focussed on their reproductive rights as such.

SexNotJenga · 05/12/2018 18:25

Lol

BillywilliamV · 05/12/2018 18:29

So you cant eat eggs, can I eat their grown up brothers and sisters?

ErrolTheDragon · 05/12/2018 18:35

So you cant eat eggs, can I eat their grown up brothers and sisters?

Nope. Basically, PETA want to eliminate farm animals, don't they? (are there any they would allow?)

Squall · 05/12/2018 18:44

In the end, won’t that lead to the deaths of umpteen farm animals? We’ve all seen what farmers have done before to animals they don’t want.

TallulahWaitingInTheRain · 05/12/2018 18:44

Yes women, unless your activism centres male people, assorted minority groups regardless of sex, equality in general and also hens, you're not a real feminist.

SkullPointerException · 05/12/2018 18:59

So, PETA can fuck the fuck off, in a nutshell. You're not a true feminist if you leverage female objectification for your pet (no pun intended) concerns either.

On a side note: last year, I incidentally (i.e. without knowing; I'm not in the habit of exploring applicants' dietary choices during job interviews) hired a vegan and caused temporary departmental panic when the facts transpired ("OMFG, we're never going to be able to do team dinners ever again, are we?"). The vegan in question turned out to be lovely and, basically, just not an arse to everyone else and all her colleagues adore her at this point. So, PETA, you're giving vegans a bad name for no reason!!!

Freespeecher · 05/12/2018 19:09

Interesting. What's PETA's view on chicks with dicks?

SkullPointerException · 05/12/2018 19:12

What's PETA's view on chicks with dicks?

I'm fully aware this was intended as hyperbole, but ...

Mamaryllis · 05/12/2018 19:14

You aren’t a real feminist if you don’t eat those.
It works as both an ‘intersectional trans inclusive’ and trans-exclusiveman-eating feminist pun. So I think we’re good.
But no thanks.

MrGHardy · 05/12/2018 19:27

I guess by that logic you are not a true non-murderer if you eat animals bred for, well eating.

And I dare say that if someone is happy to be a non-murderer, they'll be just fine as a non-feminist.

RebelWitchFace · 05/12/2018 19:30

Yeah...NO.

Reedskate · 05/12/2018 19:38

They're really sexist and have form for this sort of thing. I remember a horrible campaign against fur in the 90s, the tag was something along the lines of "It takes 10 dumb animals to make a fur coat but only 1 to wear it" accompanied by a picture of a woman in a fur coat. They advertised going vegetarian with a "funny" ad about "blubber" and "save the whales", it had a picture of a headless, fat woman illustrating it.

Currently they have an article about why only only "stupid girls brag about eating meat"

Calvinsmam · 05/12/2018 19:46

In the end, won’t that lead to the deaths of umpteen farm animals?
No they would just breed less. They have to artificially inseminate them now as it is.

Calvinsmam · 05/12/2018 19:53

I hate PETA and I absolutely think you can be a non vegan feminist, but it was learning about breastfeeding and pregnancy that made me go vegan. I couldn’t support the exploitation of females and drink the milk of a mother meant for their baby any longer.
Cows produce oxytocin and bond with their babies just as humans do (not saying it’s exactly the same before you jump on me) and I just didn’t feel entitled to take it just because I’ve been taught it’s my right anymore.

GrungeSponge · 05/12/2018 20:02

A this point I don't actually think I am true feminist. It's very hard to keep up what i am and am not supposed to be doing.

Vegilante · 05/12/2018 20:04

Thanks for jogging my memory, Reedskate.

PETA's also totally into policing speech & remaking the English language to be in keeping with its politics. Just yesterday PETA tweeted that it's time to "remove speciesism" from daily conversation by replacing "anti-animal" English idioms with awkward substitutes. For example, "feed a fed horse" instead of "beat a dead horse". And "feed two birds with one scone" instead of "kill two birds with one stone."

Apparently just mentioning words that describe violence towards animals is violence in & of itself. Or something.

Of course the internet responded, appropriately, with mockery.

Squall · 05/12/2018 20:06

Do what you feel is right. It has been said again and again that there is no one type of feminist. We all come from different backgrounds and have different areas of focus.

Beagadorsrock · 05/12/2018 20:11

PETA's tactics have been the front-runner of the 'thoughtcrime', the-only- right-way-is-my-way, type of totalitarian discourse that now permeates the so-called social justice movement. I instinctively disliked them 20 (?) years ago, still dislike them now. I know a few vegetarians and vegans, the ones most like to convince me are not going to do it with in your face aggressive name calling.

IAmNotInvisible · 05/12/2018 20:12

And "feed two birds with one scone" instead of "kill two birds with one stone." Unless the recipe for scones has eggs in it, in which case ........

I guess it means if I want to be a true feminist I'll have to also give up caviar and pearl clutching?

JassyRadlett · 05/12/2018 20:16

I saw a tweet today suggesting that PETA Is increasingly coming across like a false flag for the meat industry to make people hate vegans.
