This is being framed as a win for transgender people. I’m perplexed as to how this won’t affect stats, planning services for the population etc

(It’s behind a paywall)

How is feminism supposed to work, if we don't even know how many females are born?!

nauticant · 24/10/2018 10:30

It's not.

Singlenotsingle · 24/10/2018 10:33

Ridiculous

ijustwannadance · 24/10/2018 10:36

What is the point though?
Are people going to dress all children in identical clothes and the same hair cut so no one can tell their sex? No.
Are they going to stop calling them son or daughter? No.
Are those with vaginas going to stop being oppressed by those with a penis? No.

Fucking idiots.

Bonions · 24/10/2018 10:38

It’s the ultimate sex self ID isn’t it? There are now no more males or females so say goodbye to those sex-segregated spaces.

Not having an M or F on your birth certificate won't stop penis humans being socialised male, and vagina humans being socialised female.
It won't do a thing for sexism, or toxic gender roles, and the only way it'd "help" trans people is that it's one less document to change?
And...how can you even have sex protections for females, if females don't legally exist? Confused When no one is female on their birth certificates you can't have laws to protect females from the misogyny that will still exist, or have programs and opportunities specifically to help level out the playing field for females.

Scrumplestiltskin · 24/10/2018 10:41

This is so fucking depressing.

arranfan · 24/10/2018 10:42

You can't track sex-selected based abortion choices or infanticide.

You can't campaign effectively against child marriage, FGM, or similar.

You can't track maternal deaths.

You open up loopholes for human trafficking and slavery.

No problems, really.

NotMeOhNo · 24/10/2018 10:43

This is frightening. Tasmanians are a bunch of conservatives with a smattering of greenies. I wonder how much the actual population knows about this?

Scrumplestiltskin · 24/10/2018 10:47

An accessible article!
Apparently the hospital will still record the sex, it just won't be on the birth certificate. So this is specifically just to pander to trans people.
Tell me please, when do females get our pandering? Or even just an ounce of respect??

I saw it on Twitter, with this accompanying tweet:

Rita Panahi
@RitaPanahi
‘Labor and the Greens both plan amendments to remove gender from birth certificates, while also backing changes to remove the need for trans people to have sex change surgery before switching gender on official documents.’

I image planning they’d used average stats - ie you know roughly slightly more boys are born but it's roughly equal numbers - older population it's more women, which works till something disproportionally affects one sex, or others sources - hospital records, school data or care home admittance figures.

I don’t see how it helps – because won’t the names on the birth certificate most likely still be male or female - so presumable there would still be paper work to sort?

OldCrone · 24/10/2018 10:52

Insanity. Who is this supposed to help?

TransposersArePosers · 24/10/2018 10:52

But currently SEX is noted on birth certificates, not gender! I am so fed up of this continual conflating of the two terms. It would be great if there could be definitions to be used in law regarding what is sex and what is gender. But I suppose that would clear up confusion around the terms which would be deemed a bad thing

JellySlice · 24/10/2018 10:54

So to pander to the whims of a tiny minority, erase the rights and reality of the majority. Welcome to Transmania.

Scrumplestiltskin · 24/10/2018 10:55

TransposersArePosers Trump (the "stopped clock, right twice a day,") wants to do just that, regarding legally separating sex and gender, and many trans people take it to mean that they'll all be lynched in the streets and need to buy guns.

OldCrone it benefits ONLY the 0.5% of the population that is trans (highest priority of course!) And only marginally at that. And fucks over 51% of the population Sad

‘Labor and the Greens both plan amendments to remove gender from birth certificates, while also backing changes to remove the need for trans people to have sex change surgery before switching gender on official documents.’

How will they get a 'gender' on official documents if they don't have it on their birth certificate? Has anyone actually thought about the implications of this before patting themselves on the head about how enlightened and progressive they are?

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 24/10/2018 11:01

So went to read that article and just a few scrolls down a great big headline on a video "How sport should treat transgender athletes" complete with big fucking clearly biological bloke says he's a woman lifting weights. So fucking entitled.
And then we have to listen to Men commentators (who will likely never be affected by this shit) saying "Oooh we're referring to this person as She, aren't we so progressive". Yup, bu throwing women and girls under a bus.

Anyway I apologise for ranting and derailing I'm going to read the actual article now. And probably come back and try not to swear.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 24/10/2018 11:02

Transmania! Thanks Jelly for lowering my blood pressure a tad Grin

PencilsInSpace · 24/10/2018 11:32

There are noises about doing this in the UK too.

Future of Legal Gender (FLaG) project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (2018-2021). It explores 1) whether people should have a female/male legal status assigned at birth; and 2) how we could change the way that female/male and other gender categories are used in UK law.

More here including a really infuriating survey - www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3401337-Attitudes-to-Gender-a-survey-being-used-to-write-a-new-gender-bill-in-the-UK

Iused2BanOptimist · 24/10/2018 11:48

Everything Arranfan said.
Having had experience (through work) of a newborn baby stolen from hospital (soon found unharmed thankfully) my first thought was this opens up new loopholes and dangers.

PencilsInSpace · 24/10/2018 11:48

Maybe they should trial it in India, Pakistan or China.

They could get rid of that embarrassing skewed sex ratio at a stroke. Of course they'll still know which foetuses to abort and which babies to drown in a bucket but nobody will be counting any more.

R0wantrees · 24/10/2018 11:56

New Zealand is very close to making sweeping changes to self gender id on birth certificates & passports M/F/X

Melamin · 24/10/2018 11:58

‘Labor and the Greens both plan amendments to remove gender from birth certificates, while also backing changes to remove the need for trans people to have sex change surgery before switching gender on official documents.’

It is sort of a self annihilation strategy Confused. I just wish it didn't take everyone else down with it. Hmm
