Talking about how expensive the treatment is. (Yes, making fools out of the real life people who go for it, stealing their money.)

IAmNotInvisible · 21/10/2018 21:57

Shopify for a fledgling soap business doesn't cost thousands.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/10/2018 21:58

Shock off to America to ruin max.

transdimensional · 21/10/2018 22:00

It seems the suicide rhetoric is going to go on and on. "We could lose her altogether" (clip advertising next week's episode).

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/10/2018 22:01

Next episode looks amazing.

Mum arrested for kidnap.
More suicide threats.
Interim care order.

The End (until next week)

Sorry that was all a bit incoherent. Typing on phone very quickly.

Shocking. Just shocking.

LizzieSiddal · 21/10/2018 22:03

I wonder how many times suicide is referred to in the 3 episodes?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 21/10/2018 22:07

It's a bit of an ongoing theme that's for sure. That and Mermaids.

I really wonder how "normal" people see this programme. Do they empathise with the mother, and see the Mermaids woman as a benevolent figure dispensing free wisdom with a comforting smile. Do they believe it is essential that Max gets this "treatment" so he doesn't kill himself?

Jodie777 · 21/10/2018 22:07

It's truly awful, I really hope there are no kids out there watching it and thinking it would be great to self harm and to 'transition'. It's all about making money out of vulnerable people. Sad

Mermaids statement; there are some "interesting" bits:

We’re thrilled that the first episode of the new ITV drama Butterfly received such a positive response following its premiere last week. There have been some amazing reviews, including this Radio Times piece www.radiotimes.com/news/tv/2018-10-14/butterfly-itv-review/

We hope there will be similar reception to the brilliant second episode, which delves deeper into the need to love and support a trans child, and the challenges families with trans children face.

At Mermaids, we work with many families and hear many different stories. Butterfly is one fictional family’s story - it’s not the story of every trans child in the UK, but the story that Tony Marchant has told.

It’s important to remember that the referral and treatment process might have been sped-up or shortened to fit into the limited time that TV schedules allow. Unlike the fictitious “Ferrybank” clinic, the NHS service has a much longer time-scale, with waiting times of over 18 months for initial appointment with The Tavistock and Portman Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS) clinic: gic.nhs.uk/appointments/waiting-times/. In this service, children are rigorously assessed before having access to any developmentally-appropriate or age-specified medical intervention. Mermaids, as standard, recommends NHS services whilst recognising the strain the service is under due to increasing demand.
Private treatment, albeit quicker, would require more evidence than shown and would need significant financial input - out of reach for many families.

What we’re taking away from Butterfly this week is Maxine’s family supporting her with great love and care, despite the difficulties they come up against. Vicky moves mountains to support Maxine, something that we’re sure many parents - whether you have trans children or not - will understand.

For more positive stories from families with trans children, check out the Mermaids Twitter account: twitter.com/Mermaids_Gender. We’re looking forward to the final episode next Sunday at 9pm.

This time last week, #butterfly was trending in the top 5 of Twitter, it isnt in the top 20 at the moment.

Justhadathought · 21/10/2018 22:18

I find the continual references to self harm quite disturbing; almost glamourising the practice . We know that self harm is a major issue amongst teenage girls, in particular - but my feeling is that it can so easily become a social contagion, as well as a metaphor ( and method) for dealing with 'normal' teenage and pubescent angst.

The whole trans-agenda is really regressive in my opinion. How can embarking upon a life-long medical/surgical path be at all liberating? The child requires counselling and psycho-therapy. None of our lives are perfect, but the ability to handle cognitive dissonance is an absolute necessity for mental health. Dissonance It is part and parcel of the human condition.

Trinity1976 · 21/10/2018 22:21

It sounds awful. Hopefully so awful that everyone else watching it will see Mermaids as being as batshit as we see them.

NotTerfNorCis · 21/10/2018 22:22

Just started watching the repeat.

'I'd rather have a happy daughter than a dead son.'

BINGO.

Rumbledore · 21/10/2018 22:22

LizziesIddal I'd come on to say the same. Episode 2 doesn't even make the top 20 UK trends. Viewers may be voting with their remotes.

JillyArmeeen · 21/10/2018 22:27

Considering there are no threads about this in telly addicts, Im guessing that we're the only ones watching.

breastfeedingclownfish · 21/10/2018 22:34

Who would? It's grim

NotTerfNorCis · 21/10/2018 22:34

Someone started a thread in telly addicts last week, but it didn't get many posts.

LorettasBox · 21/10/2018 22:36

I'm not watching, far too close to home for me, but tbh, it sounds like chronically painful victorian melodrama, and even without the propaganda, I would be chewing pillows as desperately as it sounds like the actors are chewing the scenery.

FishFingerPie · 21/10/2018 22:36

Is it just me, or does it make the mother look completely unhinged?

transdimensional · 21/10/2018 22:38

FishFingerPie It's not just you.
