I'm going in - wish me luck.

Calming mug of golden milk at the ready...

I still find it utterly bizarre that Mermaids pretty much wrote this and that TRAs all over twitter are loving it, when as far as I can see it's portraying an incredibly dysfunctional family, causing mental health issues, not some sort of innate transness.

I'm sure I said this last week but why didn't they make Max the product of a happy home, who's parents supported the way he was and who want bullied at school. That would support the theory that people are innately Trans.

Butterfly is just a sequence of red flags and I find it very odd that TRAs don't see that.

Is it just me, or does it make the mother look completely unhinged?

I'm almost beginning to wonder if the writer was GC.

There was a thread in telly addicts last week yes, had about 15 posts when I checked it and most of them thought it was bull crap.
I double checked all the posters weren't from these parts, didn't recognise the names, should have invited them over.
Nobody really believes in this nonsense.

IdaBWells · 21/10/2018 22:50

I think the TRAs don’t see that because if Owl and Fox are anything to go by most of them are relatively young, without children and so they don’t have to face the reality of how their ideology is harming younger children. Also they are very self absorbed and they live in a trans ideological echo chamber as they cannot cope with alternative points of view. As someone pointed out on another thread many of these individuals such as Owl and Fox and Susie Green have now created a living upon this movement and they need new members to financially support themselves. It is all soooo highly dodgy.

trumpdump · 21/10/2018 22:59

The thread on Digitalspy was interesting. Lots of confused (and bored) posters. It's probably gone by now.

LorettasBox · 21/10/2018 23:09

The DigitalSpy thread was interesting (and very sparsely populated compared to the one for The Cry) given that it was the usual vague inclusive-leaning stuff with a few cautious voices that were swiftly stamped all over by the resident AWA bully. It all seemed to go rather dead after that. I suspect AWA bully thought they had everyone looking on in silent awe. I think it was much more likely that everyone recognized the narc and left them to it.

This

selfidentifyinggiraffe · 21/10/2018 23:21

I sadly have seen in a MH support group for mothers who suffer PND a lot of positive comments on the show... talking about how "sensitively" it's been handled.

I wanted to post what bollocks that is, but it's not really the place for starting a debate, and I'm not really a user of the group anymore and haven't for a long time so I just sadly scrolled by

BlardyBlar · 21/10/2018 23:30

I don’t find it odd. How many transition stories have you read? Many of them mention bullying from family members. I suspect many come from families that are dysfunctional, in one way or another. There was a commentary recently carried out at the behest of Prof Stock which headlined with a figure of 49% reporting abuse. If you grew up in a dysfunctional home, it seems unremarkable.

AspieAndProud · 21/10/2018 23:37

It’s important to remember that the referral and treatment process might have been sped-up or shortened to fit into the limited time that TV schedules allow.

They make it sound like an advert for a fucking iPhone.

hellandhairnets · 22/10/2018 00:06

LorretasBox Yep, yep. They are always doing it. Nobody bothers with the issue any more on there because it always turns out the same way. So everyone avoids it now.

As there, as everywhere. But the tide is turning. I see on twitter quite a few people a bit Hmm about some aspects of this programme.

That occurred to me tonight.

Are the TRAs so self absorbed that they've actually been played?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/10/2018 08:11

Are the TRAs so self absorbed that they've actually been played?

Wouldn't it be amazing if that was the case. And the finale was Max grew into a happy wee boy. Especially after all of the TRAs saying how true to life it is.

Not going to happen though.

I think because it's the story of the mother, not the child - whether unconsciously or deliberately. And the affirmative mother figure (real or fictional) is the madonna of this religion.

AngryAttackKittens · 22/10/2018 08:55

Doesn't this contravene TV guidelines on advertising? It's not actually a drama, it's an ad for Mermaids. Surely it should be labelled appropriately?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 22/10/2018 09:20

I am going to be really interested to see the viewing figures for the second episode.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 22/10/2018 09:22

I am going to be really interested to see the Ofcom report on this...

I'm about 30 seconds in and I wanna throw my coffee at the tv ...

A mermaids meet.thst was a picture of Jackie wasn't it?

Lies lies lies everywhere

qumquat · 22/10/2018 09:52

Nimko Ali was tweeting her discomfort with the programme last night. I think this is a shift?

Gileswithachainsaw · 22/10/2018 09:55

I don't get it why the toys. Why would they have spent all that money in the first place. He surely wouldn't have picked them? He's too old for most of them abyway he has the room set up of a 5 year old.

Nonsense

Gileswithachainsaw · 22/10/2018 09:57

Oh and no way would make up be allowed and thise shoes are for reception kids not secondary. Most wear lace up brogues that well arebt "girly"

Gileswithachainsaw · 22/10/2018 10:04

Never between 2 dds and multiple sleep overs etc have they ever or their friend ever danced in their bedrooms

Datun · 22/10/2018 10:26

Just checked the reviews on IMDb. Interestingly, there are only one star, or ten star reviews. I can't see anything in between.

The one star reviews are universally negative obvs. And claim all the ten star reviews have been written by people with 'four day old accounts'...

Reading the ten star reviews does indeed reveal biased nonsense.

Again, another own goal. It would be better to have left some three or four stars, and a few tens, to at least look plausible.

Gileswithachainsaw · 22/10/2018 10:31

Well that's an hour I won't get back.

-Parents fighting
-Homophobic dad
-Mum with so much guilt she will do anything
-massive bullying issues st school
-a sister so neglected and forgotten that she's using max to get the attention

And no one's figured out that maybe just maybe the problem isn't max or his body...

Datun · 22/10/2018 10:39

giles

I can't bring myself to watch it. I have zero doubt that your analysis is correct. But it is fairly shocking that Susie Green has so little self awareness in order to make a programme that might be inadvertently reflecting it.

But I found that in her TEDTalk. Zero understanding that telling a kid that the stuff they like is wrong because it's 'girls' stuff is going to have an impact.

My question is do you think this is coming across to the general public? (According to the IMDb reviews, it is.)
