FLAG Attitudes to Gender Survey: Loughborough Uni

Apologies if this has already been discussed. I did quick search but couldn't find anything.

Is anybody else completing this survey?

lboro.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/attitudes2gender

In the guidance it says it will take about 20 minutes to complete but it is taking me a damn sight longer than that as I wrestle with the terms sex and gender and how I perceive they are being applied. I think they are conflating the two terms but I am no expert which is why I am putting it out here to see if anybody else has any thoughts on it.

The text boxes were rather fun. Other than that it was a load of old bollox. Worth doing though.

What was the ESRC thinking?

GulagsMyArse · 13/10/2018 19:20

Argh half way through, need to lie down, what an appalling piece of crap that survey is.

Will finish tomorrow.

Lefthanddown · 13/10/2018 23:28

Just waded my way through the questions, 20 minutes, more like 120 minutes.

Don't questionnaires like this have to go through an ethics committee before being published?

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 14/10/2018 14:49

I asked that question at some point during the proceedings. And yes they definitely do.

HermioneWeasley · 14/10/2018 15:11

Well, that was ridiculous

Fallingirl · 15/10/2018 01:15

Yeah, I’ve just spent far too long correcting their language in the boxes too. Unbelievable, that this nonsense was given the go ahead. A first year undergraduate would fail an assignment with this much ambiguity and lack of clarity in it.

I don’t think ethics committees would necessarily see the actual questionnaires, but the principal investigaters should have demanded better from whichever research assistant put this gobbledigook together.

Coyoacan · 15/10/2018 03:36

As someone who studies a social science and got a lot out of it, I despair. It seems to have taken off and ceases to have any grounding in reality or even some sense of quality control. Sign!

TimeLady · 15/10/2018 07:35

The three year FLAG project is funded by the UK Economic and Social Research Council.

Maybe we should write and ask them if they are happy about the way their money is being wasted on poor research?

esrc.ukri.org/contact-us/

I can't find this project on their website either which is also very strange.

Imnobody4 · 15/10/2018 10:25

After some searching - have found project abstract. I find this very worrying - this qnnaire is only one part but it's so bad considering it's importance.
One to watch. gtr.ukri.org/projects?ref=ES%2FP008968%2F1

YetAnotherSpartacus · 15/10/2018 10:32

To be fair, if the project was about how to defend women's rights the ESRC would not have funded it.

Redshoeblueshoe · 15/10/2018 12:18

That was painful.

TimeLady · 15/10/2018 13:52

Imnobody4

Oh, well done! But....

Funded value: £579,717

WTF??????????????

As a major piece of law reform research, this project is intended to significantly contribute to debates about gender identity reform. While current agendas focus on the experiences of people whose birth gender does not "fit", this research addresses more broadly the implications of reforming a binary legal structure currently anchored in gender designation at birth.

Birth gender?

Juells · 15/10/2018 14:43

legal gender really isn't a thing is it?

Is that anything like legal tender?

NothingOnTellyAgain · 15/10/2018 15:47

"While current agendas focus on the experiences of people whose birth gender does not "fit", this research addresses more broadly the implications of reforming a binary legal structure currently anchored in --gender designation that bastard mother nature."

CuriousaboutSamphire · 15/10/2018 15:55

Once you have got over the 'done deal' of the language, gender this, gender that, look at which agencies/organisations are NOT part of the ongoing 'conversation'.

Not a single women's group has been named... so again, the only voice being heard is that of organisation pushing the changes. All else is dismissed as, once they have noted and immediately dismissed the idea that sex and gender may be different to some/many, they move straight to deciding whether it is right to "should gender remain a legal status assigned at birth" REMAIN!!!

I want to write to them and SHOUT SEX SEX SEX ... whatever their beliefs birth certificates currently record SEX so that remain should be change to They are dishonest from the get go!

And if I dig out the right email address/es I will be shouting at them directly!

TimeLady · 15/10/2018 16:14

There are some 'Women’s rights, feminist organisations and service providers' listed on the FLAG site here

futureoflegalgender.kcl.ac.uk/survey/support-organisations/

Redshoeblueshoe · 15/10/2018 16:14

Juells that did my head in.
When it said the Government assign you a legal gender at birth
I kept thinking my head would explode

Redshoeblueshoe · 15/10/2018 16:17

Curious I did put SEX SEX SEX, and I may have resorted to some stronger language.
It was like trying to reason with a toddler.
At least it was good when it was all over

Imnobody4 · 15/10/2018 16:27

Listed among women's organisations is Sisters Uncut as well as one's I've not heard of. Fawcett Society is the only general women's organisation, not single issue, I could see. Perhaps need to join or demand FPFW and WPUK included

TimeLady · 15/10/2018 16:35

A number of members of Sisters Uncut Bristol will be at picketing the ‘Women’s Place’ meeting on Thursday, February 8, as they believe the discussion of trans-rights will be reduced to “discrimination” and “scaremongering” of an already marginalised group.

www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/bristol-feminists-protest-against-transphobic-1180236

Yep, I reckon FP4W, WPUK and others need to be in on this too, otherwise it'll be as biased as hell.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 15/10/2018 16:40

There are some 'Women’s rights, feminist organisations and service providers' listed on the FLAG site here But not in the outline of the study... the bit that is its best face forward to get/retain funding!

There it states that its advisory group "Including representatives from the EHRC, Stonewall and EDF....will meet at key stages to advise on research design, dissemination, and assessment of research methodology. Members will also assist in reaching research participants"

So that is ALL it has to do to meet its obligations regarding external voices, checkpoints,, all else will be a matter of choice, general input for FLAG as a whole but not this specific piece of research!

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 15/10/2018 16:55

Sisters uncut organised a protest against us in Edinburgh too.

They fit in with trendy academic feminism as they're pro prostitution and they focus on fairly superficial things in general.

PencilsInSpace · 15/10/2018 17:50

I'm ploughing through this questionnaire when I should be finishing my GRA submission. Does anybody know if it saves reliably if you click 'finish later'?

I think it's important that as many of us do this as possible and all 'our' women's orgs should be alerted and encouraged to contribute. This study is about how best to get rid of sex as a legal category and one of the desired outcomes is a draft bill.

Here's the Loughborough press release.

It is my belief that GRA reform is being pushed for so aggressively because it's a step towards eradicating sex as a legal category altogether. The GRA is obsolete but self-ID would render legal sex categories meaningless.

PencilsInSpace · 15/10/2018 17:51

Intersex and non-binary people should not be treated as distinct genders but be fitted into the categories female or male.

Fucking hell.

theOtherPamAyres · 15/10/2018 18:24

Intersex and non-binary people should not be treated as distinct genders

I commented that the question would be outrageously offensive to people with an intersex (medical) condition. It betrayed the author's confusion and ignorance.
