Apologies if this has already been discussed. I did quick search but couldn't find anything.

Is anybody else completing this survey?

lboro.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/attitudes2gender

In the guidance it says it will take about 20 minutes to complete but it is taking me a damn sight longer than that as I wrestle with the terms sex and gender and how I perceive they are being applied. I think they are conflating the two terms but I am no expert which is why I am putting it out here to see if anybody else has any thoughts on it.

Couldn't sleep, so filled it in.

It's to do with this project:

Should we be worried?

tediousnamechange · 12/10/2018 09:59

I really shouldn't have been ploughing my way through this this morning while doing school run/snotty baby/dh away/ cleaner coming (saves marriage) but my god I've had fun!

Is being gender critical an identity? It bloody should be and it's literal violence it wasn't included.

WhatTheWatersShowedMe · 12/10/2018 10:22

I did it too. 20 minutes to complete, my arse!

I also pointed out the conflating of sex and gender and how badly written and confusing the questions were because of this at every turn.

TimeLady · 12/10/2018 10:30

FLAG has its own website

futureoflegalgender.kcl.ac.uk/

Interesting to look a the people involved, both the research team and the advisory board. I see Alex Sharpe from Keele is on the latter.

Judder · 12/10/2018 10:30

I've just read this thread, having filled in the form. I agree with all the points made here. The form was gobbledygook but I did my best.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 12/10/2018 10:54

from the website

"Currently in Britain, we are all assigned a legal gender at birth. But are there good reasons for retaining a system of assigned gender; or one in which people’s gender has formal legal status? "

they mean sex, sex is recorded.

If they get rid of it all, then issue will arise such as, planning for how much maternity provision in different areas, estimating how many people will need services for the elderly etc etc

Mistakes in areas like this are costly and have major impact if they are wrong.

I don't know if the poeple who have these ideas are:

  • Ignorant or uncurious about how provision of things like services for different groups come about > do they assume they just "happen" or are they so myopic that they can't see past their own needs?
  • Know about this stuff and don't care as pushing their religion is more important
  • Other reasons?

I'll do the survey :)

Should we be worried?

I think the researchers ought to be worried Grin

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 12/10/2018 11:22

I think I did take about 20 minutes. It felt longer though.
If anyone is interested in the reading list included in my responses, I recommend Nancy Fraser, Stevi Jackson and Sheila Jeffreys.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 12/10/2018 11:23

"Do you participate in religious activities? (e.g. go to temple/mosque/church, mark religious festivals, observe religious law, pray)"

I'm an athiest but we celebrate xmas - it's a standard celebration in the UK. And it's a religious festival. So............

They didn't think it out.

PLUS

There's no definitions at the start? They go straight into it. So poeple will be answering different questions as some will read gender = sex, some will read gender = internal ID and some wll read gender = oppressive caste system.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 12/10/2018 11:24

"do you identify as part of a minority ethnic/ racial community (or communities)"

so I can say yes (although i'm white english) if I say I feel it inside?

NothingOnTellyAgain · 12/10/2018 11:27

Defining yourself is pointless.

Now I get to self define my class and if I'm disabled.

While there are good reasons that disabiltiy questions ask for self definition, it never meant that the answers could be disconnected entirelyy from reality eg transabled.

I can say I'm upper class but it's not true.

What ARE you is a better question. This is v out of fashion though.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 12/10/2018 11:28

"If you have children, what are your child/ren's age/s and gender/s?

"I don't know they havent' told me"

FFSFFSFFS · 12/10/2018 11:29

I did it. But it hurt my head. Government assigned gender??

UpstartCrow · 12/10/2018 11:35

Theres some info here, and from this I would have expected a survey that didnt read like it was written by students;
www.lboro.ac.uk/news-events/news/2017/july/is-male-female-gender-outdated/

Is there any way to tell them how deeply flawed their questionnaire is? If they dont understand The Equality Act now, so how can they make any impact assessment?

I got the impression it was written by men, or younger women. They don't mention anything about issues that directly affect women and are biology based such as mammograms, smear tests, miscarriage, periods, or trauma therapy services such as rape crisis or domestic violence, or post assault sexual health services.

rememberatime · 12/10/2018 11:43

I constantly had to check if they meant sex or gender... I don't think they knew themselves, although they ask at the beginning for you to define how you see it.

I thought "great" they are asking for my definition, therefore they understand that there is a difference. But throughout, there seemed to be constant conflation.

At the end I told them that the results of their survey will be highly suspect and open to criticism due to the ambiguous nature of the questions.

NothingOnTellyAgain · 12/10/2018 11:53

have they defined gender / sex anywhere in the notes or anything?

I don't know what they mean,

rememberatime · 12/10/2018 11:56

they ask for your own personal definition.

EverardDigby · 12/10/2018 12:55

Everyone's own personal definition doesn't really work very well with them talking about legal gender though.

TimeLady · 12/10/2018 12:57

Just filled it in. I would recommend others doing it too, as you get an opportunity of giving feedback right at the end.

Which I did Grin That felt good.

facelessvongorgeous · 12/10/2018 13:14

Blimey that was really, really poor. I'm surprised it even got to the stage it could be rolled out because of the lack of clarity in the questions.

Ratitatita · 12/10/2018 13:17

Has anybody requested to give a copy of the results?

I haven't as I was a little bit concerned about providing my main email address, but I may request a copy under a dummy one.

Ratitatita · 12/10/2018 13:17

to get - not to give

ImPreCis · 12/10/2018 13:41

Well I’ve completed it. FUll of notes about sex not gender. Tirade at the end, about how poor the quality of the survey is and that women’s rights are being erased, sure they will love reading all that.😀

Fearandsurprise · 12/10/2018 13:50

I’ve completed it.
Good grief.
Remind me never to encourage anyone to apply to the University of Loughborough if this is representative of the quality of their research.

TimeLady · 12/10/2018 14:09

Three professors leading the research team. I'd be embarrassed to be associated with that.

Davina Cooper
Principal Investigator
Professor of Research
The Dickson Poon School of Law
King’s College London

Emily Grabham
Co-Investigator
Professor and Co-Director of Research and Postgraduate Research
Kent Law School
University of Kent

Elizabeth Peel
Co-investigator
Professor of Communication and Social Interaction
Loughborough University

So it's not just Loughborough. King's College and Kent too.
