'Momentum' video on transgenderism

Was shocked to see this come up on my newsfeed.

The bit where they say: "Your children will definitely have trans friends, they might even be trans themselves" sent shivers down my spine.

Are we supposed to just accept this as inevitable?

It's from Corbyn's main supporters' group I think.

I might have posted this before but I remember reading this in the Guardian in a Q&A with various people about their summer plans. I remember being creeped out by it.

"What’s your summer soundtrack?
It’s a bit cliched, but Lana Del Rey. It’s all languid California suncream and cherry cola. You can roll around in the garden pretending to be Lolita, or Cecile from Bonjour Tristesse."

No woman would ever write this - certainly not one who was a teacher and is now is an author of books for teenagers and goes into schools to talk to kids. Would they..?

Placemats “If you tell anyone you’ll get into trouble. you will be seen as the bad person “
Yes. This. Sinister.

SirVixofVixHall · 07/09/2018 12:11

Bromentum certainly seemed riled enough to use the “you want people to like you, don’t you? People don’t like nasty ,homophobic , stupid bigots do they ?” Card.
Agree with the pp who said the timing was “interesting”.
I can imagine this being shown in schools...get ‘em while they are young enough to want to be part of the herd .

HamsterToast · 07/09/2018 14:06

The video is right in that hating trans people just for being different or 'non-conforming' is bigotry and should be indeed be cancelled. If this video tackles some of that then good on it.

However, they draw false equivalence between hating 'difference' for no real reason, and concerns about the reinforcement of gender stereotypes, the impact of letting men into female spaces, the consequences of erasing biological sex.

Raising genuine concerns based on crime stats and science is not the same as blind hatred. Obvs, innit.

FloralBunting · 07/09/2018 14:22

Well, exactly. It's this ridiculous boiling down any disagreement to 'hate' that stunts the thought processes. Thankfully I don't know anyone who is a gleeful bigot, or anyone who is lacking in self examination to the point where they have an unacknowledged prejudice and don't at least think about their assumptions.

But this incessant use of the word 'hate' when someone has a different opinion is just pure silencing.

Freespeecher · 07/09/2018 14:26

I'm a little surprised that Momentum put out such a video. I thought they were much more about the class struggle than identity politics - more John McDonnell than Owen Jones. Maybe they're just going through the motions.

placemats · 07/09/2018 18:21

I've just seen this shared on Facebook by a woman who goes on and on and on, and on about celebrating 100 years since women got the vote.

She is a member of momentum and got Mermaids in for a talk under the aegis of Labour Women only in the CLP. She is older than me!

I did reply.

placemats · 07/09/2018 18:25

PS Her posts are like 'woman know thy place, you got the vote, what more do you want?'

She is in a heterosexual relationship but mainly the focus of her posts is on her new puppy - he, yes it's a he, is rather sweet.

It’s a bit cliched, but Lana Del Rey. It’s all languid California suncream and cherry cola. You can roll around in the garden pretending to be Lolita, or Cecile from Bonjour Tristesse.

The fuck?

Why are these people allowed to get away with saying this shit? Why is it so 'progressive' so 'inspiring'?

WhatTheWatersShowedMe · 10/09/2018 10:24

This video is so, so good.

I’m seeing my MP on Friday. He’s gay and Labour. I’m sure he’s going to be very offended by the suggestion he just missed out on being a woman by the fragrant Juno Dawson.

BettyDuMonde · 10/09/2018 10:28

Datalounge’s thread on Juno Dawson is one of the funniest things I have ever read on the internet.

Not Safe For Work, mind you!

I’m a Momentum member (and an elected officer in my area)

Up until the last election I voted Labour in every general election since 1979. Stuck with them through the dark days of Militant Tendency and now Militant is back calling itself Momentum. I doubt I will ever vote Labour again.

Lostinedinburgh · 10/09/2018 15:18

I voted labour for 30 years, apart from one election voted for the liberals because that was the only way to possibly dislodge the tory MP in what was the second safest tory seat in Scotland. Back in the days when there were safe tory seats in Scotland, improbable though that sounds nowadays. First voted SNP because of the Iraq war. Continued to vote SNP because Scottish Labour in a hopeless mess. Can't vote for any of them now. Even without the gender nonsense, Labour sounds like a bunch of totalitarians. And SNP in bed with the Greens.
