Cisgender women (and other people who menstruate) - The Pool

I am so fucking done with The Pool. Their articles have been getting more and more ridiculous recently but today we have this little gem

'.....after 15 years of talking to other cisgender women (and other people who menstruate) about their periods, I realise it’s all very normal'

link

Seriously, how do people come out with this utter nonsense? Do the writers on The Pool have absolutely no critical thinking skills anymore? Who do they think their target audience is, and are they determined to alienate them even further?

So sick of it

It’s sentences like that that really highlight how nonsensical this language butchering has become.

Being of the sex that menstruates as part of their reproductive system is part of what makes a human a woman. No need for the cis-gender bit (is there ever?!) and definitely no need for the further qualifier. ‘Other people who menstruate’. Just women. Women menstruate. Nothing to do with gender or how someone identifies. It’s sex.

So frustrating. People bending over backwards to be inclusive that they just trample all over science and sense whilst also chipping away at women and what it means to be a woman.

Biologifemini · 01/08/2018 09:13

It is a shame that they are anti science and talk nonsense.
It is an otherwise nice website but I agree they are now talking bullshit to the max.

Lottapianos · 01/08/2018 09:17

'Just women. Women menstruate. Nothing to do with gender or how someone identifies. It’s sex. '

Did you ever imagine you would have to write those words, and point that out, to other adults? It's insane

I'm increasingly finding that the only part of The Pool I can tolerate is their recipes in the Food and Home section

OP posts:
VodkaRevelation · 01/08/2018 09:18

It is insane. It’s just a series of factual statements yet people will argue against them.

Clairetree1 · 01/08/2018 09:22

how about we all contact them individually and express our hurt and distress and being called "ciswomen"?

Clairetree1 · 01/08/2018 09:25

For general enquiries and career opportunities, please email [email protected]
and we'll get back to you as soon as possible.

If you'd like to talk to The Pool brand partnerships and email advertising team, please email [email protected]

which email to tell them how upsetting it is to be called "ciswoman"??

bestbefore · 01/08/2018 09:25

It's do odd to use that phrase and later on she says "The “female health” tracking features were only added in June of this year, which is kind of astonishing, given that women are thought to have been using menstrual calendars for roughly 20,000 years" and mentions women several times past the intro Confused

AnduinsGirl · 01/08/2018 09:27

I've unfollowed the Pool for exactly this kind of stupidity.

Ereshkigal · 01/08/2018 09:28

Anyone know if anyone in particular there is pushing this bullshit?

fbsg · 01/08/2018 09:28

The frustrating thing is that the article immediately defaults to using the word woman correctly. It reads like the writer submitted it and an editor decided they needed the disclaimer up front to avoid complaints. It's the same politeness that meant people initially played along with the pronoun game and the 'treating as if' policy. But that politeness wasn't enough and now anything that doesn't validate their beliefs is violence Hmm.

bestbefore · 01/08/2018 09:30

Fbsg- exactly!!

IWannaSeeHowItEnds · 01/08/2018 09:31

That pissed me off this morning too.
If anyone from The Pool is reading this, the word you are looking for is WOMEN. It needs no further definition.

BeUpStanding · 01/08/2018 09:33

Yeah I can't be bothered with The Pool any more either.

fbsg - that's it exactly.

Lottapianos · 01/08/2018 09:35

Clairetree1, emailing is a good idea. I will try to do that later today.

fbsg, maybe it is some trendy editorial policy and it's not actually the individual writers who are at fault. Hmm....

OP posts:
VickieCherry · 01/08/2018 09:41

I just read this and eyerolled - it does sound like an editorial decision rather than being part of the original article. It's somewhat crowbarred in - you either use 'women' or 'people who menstruate', no need for both.

SpartacusVonWaitrose · 01/08/2018 09:46

Linguistic Rube Goldberg.

AngryAttackKittens · 01/08/2018 09:47

Definitely the fault of an editor either virtue signalling or trying to avoid a TRA pile-on.

2ManyDicksOnTheDancefloor · 01/08/2018 09:54

This totally annoyed me this morning when I read it too. I'm a biology teacher, I won't be saying this when I teach the menstrual cycle to year 7, does that make me transphobic?

fantasmasgoria1 · 01/08/2018 10:01

I have seen this! Tbh when I see “cis
Gender / women I struggle to read as I get angry!

Clairetree1 · 01/08/2018 10:14

I'm a biology teacher, I won't be saying this when I teach the menstrual cycle to year 7

I'm also a biology teacher, and I refuse point blank to parrot the TRA party line on sex and gender.

If I'm asked in lessons, I give an honest, scientifically correct answer.

If I'm sacked for that one day, I don't care.

Trying to tell me to teach "transwomen are women" I put on a par with teachers in nazi germany being made to teach nazi race science

Clairetree1 · 01/08/2018 10:14

I don't allow the term "cis" in my classroom, as it is offensive

Clairetree1 · 01/08/2018 10:15

I have seen this! Tbh when I see “cis
Gender / women I struggle to read as I get angry!

i think we just have to challenge it every single time, verbally or in writing, never let it go even once

Clairetree1 · 01/08/2018 10:17

I don't allow the term "cis" in my classroom, as it is offensive

well, I do allow it in the context of isomers of organic molecules, obviously!

Grin

because that is what it applies to! does not apply to human beings in any way.

bakingdemon · 01/08/2018 10:32

Do join me in the comments underneath the Pool's Facebook post to speak some common sense. I'm currently getting a lot of "so what problem do you have with inclusive language?" type responses....

TransplantsArePlants · 01/08/2018 10:42

Have they turned into Doctor Dolittle and been talking to animals?

Bats menstruate. So do elephant shrews. Are some of them identifying as 'people'?

I think we should be told
