"Men are getting a 'raw deal' despite tough equality legislation, Dominic Raab MP writes as he calls for an end to 'feminist bigotry'."

An article by the latest addition to the Conservative cabinet:

''Young British couples are tired of the equality bandwagon, dreamt up in the 1960s, pitting men and women against each other. ''

Well this is a new and interesting iteration on the endless war on women.

ballsballsballs · 09/07/2018 16:36

A man telling feminists that we're feminising wrong?

How refreshing.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 09/07/2018 16:38

Don't remind me.

R0wantrees · 09/07/2018 16:44

There seem echoes with the views of Philip Davies.

Guardian article December 2016 www.theguardian.com/politics/2016/dec/16/philip-davies-anti-feminist-tory-mp-filibuster-women-violence-bill

"Conservative MP tries to derail bill protecting women against violence
Philip Davies, an anti-feminist, accused by Labour and Lib Dems of attempting to filibuster bill by talking for too long

(extract)
"He continued: “I can’t really believe this needs saying, to be honest, but I think it’s so discriminatory and sexist to say that we should only be focusing on violence against women. If this was the other way round, there would be an absolute outcry from people in this house – and rightly so. I don’t take the view that violence against women and girls is somehow worse than violence against men and boys.

“As far as I’m concerned, all violence is unacceptable and all violence against the person should be punished by law. Both men and women are victims and both are perpetrators of these crimes. I believe in true equality and want people to be treated equally when they are a victim of crime and when they’re a perpetrator of crime.” (continues)

Reads like the Faily Mail on crack cocaine.

Melanippe · 09/07/2018 16:51

Yes. He hates women, the poor and people with disabilities.

I'm so so glad he's the new Brexit sec.

R0wantrees · 09/07/2018 16:54

THe Guardian article above also quotes Jess Philips,

(extract)
"Jess Phillips, the Labour MP for Birmingham Yardley, said: “For some people, they wake up on Christmas Day and they will try not to say anything wrong. They will try not to put a foot wrong. They will make sure everything is perfect. They will have risk-assessed every single step that they take throughout the day because just this one day their children deserve not to have the monster that lives in their home erupt in their faces.

“Just this one day, their children deserve to have the peaceful day that all of our children have taken for granted and so all of the stresses we’ll feel, for those people, will be terror and control over everything they say and do in order to keep things safe.”

Phillips denied Davies the opportunity to intervene in her comments, but he later made a 78-minute speech saying he had a fundamental objection to the idea that MPs only needed to deal with violence against women." (continues)

She was interviewed by Channel 4 this week,
"They both threaten me... They both try and gaslight you."

Jess Phillips MP explains how the far-left and the far-right both abuse her in similar ways, in the latest Ways to Change the World podcast.

One of my friends has the misfortune to live in Philip Davies's constituency. Poor woman.

I can’t really believe this needs saying, to be honest, but I think it’s so discriminatory and sexist to say that we should only be focusing on violence against women. If this was the other way round, there would be an absolute outcry from people in this house – and rightly so. I don’t take the view that violence against women and girls is somehow worse than violence against men and boys.

He's actually this thick, you know. It doesn't occur to him to consider who is perpetrating this violence against women and girls and men and boys.

very important current thread:

OP LordPanofthePeaks writes:
"Posters may or may not be aware of the significant rise in the experience of DV at the times of football tournaments, and most specifically the World Cup.

Anyone googling this issue will read some startling statistics, and would appreciate that as the tournament draws near this is a heighten time of risk to women. In the borough where I work the highest ever reporting time of DV was when England played Paraguay last time ( and won).

I don't wish to killjoy a fabulous event, but the darker side of it should not be ignored.

Nationally, DV incidents reported 'spike' at these times, and we can speculate why.
I do have a professional ( and personal) interest in this, and am keen to promote an awareness of this danger. I do have responsibilities in a public organisation for Domestic Violence, as well as Children and Families, and have noticed a lack of promotion of this danger which can be so easily predicted.

So I am inviting a discussion and pointers for how people, both perptrators and potential victims can do what they can to avoid this nasty experience. MN do not ahve a current DV campaign, though the strength of opinion from posters may change this.

Anyone?"

omg...........

men - pooooor men.

womanformallyknownaswoman · 09/07/2018 17:09

Let's pretend women aren't getting killed by men. Because my brain can't hold 2 thoughts at once - that the official police stats clearly show male violence is killing and maiming women and children in large numbers but I think women must be exaggerating or provoking men and I am right. I mean how else would the police stats get so skewed?

I think women should spend all of their time at home thinking of ways to moderate their behaviour to stop themselves being killing. /s

LangCleg · 09/07/2018 17:09

It''s Raab C Brexit!

(DH just said that: I can't take credit.)

R0wantrees · 09/07/2018 17:18

There is a literary device called 'pathetic fallacy' which can mean 'using the weather to represent the mood of the character in the text, the typical examples being cloudy and stormy weather representing depressed or anxious states, or a beautiful and sunny day representing a hopeful start.'

It seems the heatwave is breaking over London & much of the UK with rain forecast today!

“Northerly winds will be coming in and beginning to freshen things up,” Becky Mitchell, meteorologist with the Met Office, told The Independent'

Bowlofbabelfish · 09/07/2018 17:19

Raab C Brexit

Grin howling with laughter here.

R0wantrees · 09/07/2018 17:20

Grin Mr LangCleg!

SlothSlothSloth · 09/07/2018 17:28

Usually with men who spout this kind of thing I just console myself with the thought that they’re a dying breed, but Dom is actually pretty young...

DisturblinglyOrangeScrambleEgg · 09/07/2018 17:33

He continued: “I can’t really believe this needs saying, to be honest, but I think it’s so discriminatory and sexist to say that we should only be focusing on violence against women

Sure, OK then, lets re-focus on the people committing the violence.. I dare you.

nauticant · 09/07/2018 17:36

All I'm seeing in politics at the moment is pathetic phallusy.

Procrastinator1 · 09/07/2018 17:39

Raab wants a bonfire of regulation. He's one of the authors of the "Britannia Unchained" bollocks.

Bowlofbabelfish · 09/07/2018 17:45

A bonfire of deregulation... oh just wait for brexit. All those pesky laws that protect women, minorities... they will all go

LangCleg · 09/07/2018 17:46

pathetic phallusy

Grin

Another one to steal!

MIdgebabe · 09/07/2018 17:50

Today I am thinking about compromise ( possibly a reaction to the brexit strops)

I hear those cries of poor hard done by men not who do no wrong and yet still get treated with suspicion or worse, discrimination.

I therefore promise that I will stop being a feminist....on the day that it is shown that the rates of violence shown by people with medically male bodies is the same as the rates of violence shown by people with medically female bodies.

FermatsTheorem · 09/07/2018 18:24

Raab C Brexit... Lang I think I may be in love with Mr Lang!

But yes, Raab is a complete turd. (Whether polished or unpolished.)

FullyFledgedFemale · 10/07/2018 17:50

Of course he is 100% wrong without any need for further inquiry. Clearly equality means men are:

75% of murder victims
75% of suicides
80% of substance abusers
90% of the incarcerated
95% of rough sleepers
95% of workplace fatalities
Destined to die 6 years earlier on average.

Good work ladies. You really are demonstrating women's capacity to think objectively and make fact-based assessments. Obviously you all love and respect the men in your lives including your significant others and sons.
