I read this blog about the Leeds red light district from someone who lives there. It's so illuminating. This needs a wider audience - please share on social media. This is what decriminalisation looks like.

@Alternateview
your comments are tone deaf and out of place. If society is forcing women into prostitution then society is doing 'society' wrong. This isn't the right thread for you to be pushing your views.

Money. Is. The. Duress.

LassWiADelicateAir · 27/05/2018 13:26

I am pretty sure Julie can stand up for herself, but actually that stinks

But getting this into the mainstream press should have nothing to do with the messenger standing up for herself. It then becomes about the messenger, not the message.

SardineReturns · 27/05/2018 13:28

Anyfucker the more people message on a topic the better.

Routing everything through one person is simply not as effective.

The more voices speaking out on a subject the better.

If the pro punter lobby was one bloke it would be much easier to ignore. The tactic of using lots of voices and especially people who are not punters to speak is effective.

SardineReturns · 27/05/2018 13:34

"If we are looking at the street walkers, which in fairness have a pretty crappy life. What would be your suggestions for them".

We live in a wealthy country which believes in supporting people who struggle. We have a social security system and healthcare and do on.

Given that, can you think of any possible mechanisms by which poor desperate women might be able to survive, aside from having manky men sticking their dicks in them, putting them at risk of physical and psychological injury, disease, violence and rape? Apparently not. Says it all, really.

SardineReturns · 27/05/2018 13:36

I think this falls into the "I'm doing her a favour" excuse for paying to fuck someone.

I say again! I am not in support of anyone being exploited! I just think that regardless of any ones thoughts it will happen. So it should be made safer.

jesus christ

Offred · 27/05/2018 13:41

‘I’m doing her a favour’ ‘It will happen anyway’ ‘I’m A Nice Guy, some other punters are not so she’s better off with me’ ‘I’m not making her sell sex’ ‘If she wants to earn money that way who am I to say she can’t’

Offred · 27/05/2018 13:44

We’ll have #NAMALT in a sec too cos this is a Nice Guy remember... he doesn’t pay to rape women he just supports other men being allowed to pay to rape women.

mummyyessy · 27/05/2018 13:48

It is so dangerous to say 'oh well prostitution will still go on so let's make it legal in X location'

By condemning something as Illegal society is making it clear that it's bad / wrong = society does not condone this = human decency is the aim

We may not ever achieve the fucking aim, but you MUST in my view have a noble fucking aim in the first place.

Otherwise society just goes to shit.

As it has in Holbeck by the sounds of things.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 27/05/2018 13:50

God. Really awful. This need highlighting. The MP for this area needs to be publically called out in Parliament for this.

When I was a student in the 80s, I worked in a restaurant in the Anderston area of Glasgow. It was a v expensive restaurant in a really shitty area. If we worked past midnight taxis were paid for our journey home but if it was just before, I had to walk to get a bus, which meant walking past the 'red light' district. The women had been moved further down to this area due to gentrification and I was kerb crawled and propositioned a quite a few times. It was fucking terrifying, badly lit and I ended up just paying for the cab myself, even though it almost cancelled out my earnings for the night. These men are scum, and they don't give a shit about the effect they have on women's safety or freedom to walk down a fucking street without being asked to fuck for money. There is a rank cesspit in hell waiting for these fuckers.

We’ll just decriminalise all crime while we are at it...

Murder? Oh well that still goes on...

Drug dealing? That still goes on...

Theft? Fraud? Assault? It all ‘still goes on’

LassWiADelicateAir · 27/05/2018 13:52

Spot on mummyyessy

Even if one could accept that for the individual prostitute and individual punter that it is simply a contract between 2 consenting adults the spill out to wider society and societal attitudes can't be ignored.

Offred · 27/05/2018 13:53

Let’s have murder zones... assault zones... theft zones...

Let’s keep those zones away from the nice respectable people though...

FermatsTheorem · 27/05/2018 13:53

Reminds me of the punter we had on here once who proudly (yes, you heard that right, proudly) told us about using an escort who turned out to be a penniless student on her first job who burst into tears. He thought he was a good guy because he let her pet his Labrador to calm her down before he fucked her for money. Instead of googling student welfare, giving her her bus fare home and encouraging her to leave without fucking her. Like a genuinely decent man would have done. (Admittedly a genuinely decent man wouldn't have engaged her in the first place).

The level of self-delusion, entitlement and complete lack of empathy among these men never ceases to astonish me.

PencilsInSpace · 27/05/2018 13:55

Julie Bindel has regular columns in the Guardian and the Independent. She has the background knowledge to do a decent job of this.

Gacapa · 27/05/2018 13:55

Don't want to out myself. But I'm going to get on to this.

mummyyessy · 27/05/2018 13:56

@Gacapa huh???

mummyyessy · 27/05/2018 13:57

Please go & bump my thread in caps calling for journalists on the main chat board...more names the better.

Just bump it...

LangCleg · 27/05/2018 14:04

You may all not believe this, but I truly believe in equality!

Yeah, no. Go away. Do one. Get in the sea.

We are talking among ourselves about matters pertaining to women, including the intersections between social policy, criminal justice policy, social class and birth sex. We are not talking to weirdo punters searching the net in order to intrude on women's conversations. Your contribution is neither wanted nor required.

Bog off.

Bowlofbabelfish · 27/05/2018 14:06

it is a truth universally acknowledged that a man who proclaims himself a NiceGuy™️ Is always, invariably, anything but nice.

LockedOutOfMN · 27/05/2018 14:06

Good God, this is awful. I'm not surprised the police are both useless and corrupt.

Bump.
