Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Let's meet up - find/start gender critical feminist groups

There have been a couple of threads recently about finding/starting local gender critical feminist groups in real life, see here and here.

How about we just do it!

If you feel comfortable doing so, please post your nearest large town/city and we can then contact each other by pm (after due diligence with an advanced search) and talk to each other at a local level, and then organise for groups to meet up in real life.

I'll start. I'm in the far north of Scotland so don't really expect anyone very close to me, but would love to find anyone who could meet up in Inverness.

I also know of groups who meet up in Dundee, Glasgow and Edinburgh who I would be willing to pass on your details to.

Many of us are quite rightly cautious of being out in public on this issue, but are simultaneously desperate to find like-minded women. If anyone has any better ideas for us connecting in real life, please post.

IUsed2BanOptimist, literally everywhere is a 30-40 minute drive from me - I visited Wells cathedral years ago when I was living in Bristol but I would love to see it again. Doesn’t it have a famous clock? (sounding a bit like a Russian poisoner...)

edithvoice · 17/09/2018 15:19

I'm new to MN but am already familiar with GC circles from twitter (same username)

I'm in London, near Kings cross :)

MaybeDoctor · 17/09/2018 15:25

Central London is fine for me.

arranfan · 17/09/2018 15:32

edithvoice MaybeDoctor - is it practical for either of you to slip along to Linda and Venice's inadvertent gathering at Westminster Magistrates (or environs) later this month (assuming it still has to go ahead)?

calpop · 17/09/2018 15:34

London or surroundings for me

IAmSproutycus · 17/09/2018 16:13

Newcastle now has a new GC group which has met once and now plans to meet monthly. It’ll take me a while to get round to going through posting history (sorry), but happy to pass email details to organisers if you like to PM me. If you were at the Newcastle WPUK talk you should already have been invited. Attendees came from fairly far around the city, eg Yorkshire upwards.

FeminaSum · 17/09/2018 18:27

I'm currently in London, will be moving to Cambridge in a couple of weeks.

OhBuggerandArse · 17/09/2018 19:41

I'd love to join in an Edinburgh group if someone could send me the info :-)

pombear · 17/09/2018 22:59

Just bumping this before I go to bed as I feel a little responsible for the accidental derail this morning when I spotted DonnaBe definitely not seeking local GC women to link up with, despite being definitely not GC.

In its essence, it's such a lovely connecting thread, so just popping it up to the top.

ErrolTheDragon · 17/09/2018 23:04

We don't shoot the messenger, pombear. It was a salutary reminder that we do need to check people out.

MrsFogi · 17/09/2018 23:38

Looks like there may be a quorum for those of us in South East London.

FloralBunting · 18/09/2018 01:02

I have plans for Saturday now. It's all rather exciting.

SPOFS · 18/09/2018 04:38

@IAmSproutycus

I am in Newcastle. How can I join the group?

Also, that Angelos chap that got sacked from Durham Uni's Humanist Soc and newspaper is in Durham. Might be worth inviting him?

ScepticShrew · 18/09/2018 12:59

I'm in Aberdeenshire & linked in with others in Dundee. Would be great to start a group up here. I've already met up with one other person and we're organising to get out with flyers. My twitter handle is the same as name on mumsnet. You wont find many posts on here as I tend to most of my social media on FB & twitter.

IAmSproutycus · 18/09/2018 15:01

Hi SPOFS, it’s women only so not for Angelos I’m afraid. There was a decision made by the group organisers to keep it that way. Certainly I voted that way to continue it. I’ll read through your posting history (sorry), and if you’d kindly PM me your email I’ll forward it to the good women holding our email list (we don’t all have copies of it for obvious reasons).

IAmSproutycus · 18/09/2018 15:03

Having said which, how in the name of Haydes do I search posters history? Search function allows up to one hour only!

BetsyM00 · 18/09/2018 16:53

Purple button at the top of the page that says Advanced Search.

sanitywhatsanity · 18/09/2018 17:06

I'm Newcastle but just name changed. Happy to list all my other names in a pm!

Bowednotbroken · 18/09/2018 22:35

West Yorkshire anyone? It would be great to be able to talk about this!

WhatTheWatersShowedMe · 19/09/2018 10:29

Brighton group is recruiting! Send a PM for details.

MaybeDoctor · 20/09/2018 12:24

I am happy to attend a meeting, not sure what the magistrate event involves.

Anyone else a bit wary of the personal safety aspect?

Mrskeats · 20/09/2018 12:27

I’m chester area

arranfan · 20/09/2018 13:59

,not sure what the magistrate event involves.
Anyone else a bit wary of the personal safety aspect?

Plans for the Magistrates are to hold a silent protest outside Westminster Magistrates on the day (afaik) but could do with more detail as it's very soon.

And, yes. I am concerned about the safety aspect. However, I feel safer trying to address this now rather than look out for my safety in a future where Self-ID has happened and it will be implausible to have a guaranteed safe place for women and girls.

MaybeDoctor · 20/09/2018 15:25

I am still fairly new to all this, so not sure who is going to the Magistrates court or why? Or who the named individuals are?

Anyway, if someone has details of a central London meeting please pm me?
