Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Is this really a feminist board?

I am a crap feminist. I haven't read a single book on the subject. Not De Beauvoir, not Greer, not Butler. The reasons for that are to do with a disability that I'd rather not go into, but I am a woman with a brain, and the Republic of Ireland is having a referendum on repealing the 8th this week. There it is, look, thirty threads down. And this "Feminism and Women's Rights" board's primary concern seems to be "What it will really take the peak trans the world?"

So I'm asking you, because I genuinely, honestly, cross my heart and hope to die, believe you are all better read and/or have more experience and/or more knowledge of being a woman than I do.

Doesn't that bother you? Doesn't it bother you that, four days away from the repeal vote, there's one thread on that in the bottom third of a fifty-thread page, and two or three dozen trans-related threads covering everything from Amnesty International to Jordan Peterson to exactly what Munroe Bergdorf told Venice Allan? Does it give you any pause for thought?

OP posts:

Excellent illustration of the cliche of trans women identifying as women but with us

(Assume you meant 'not' with us?)

I get sick to the back teeth of threads being vandalised by narcissism that is not coming from women. It's just graffiti. Halt and derail every single fucking time. But you don't understand me - the cry of the male from time immortal. I just want to say - it's not that I don't understand you; it's that I don't care if I understand you or not.

AngryAttackKittens · 22/05/2018 16:01

Me neither. I'm sure the navel gazing is all very interesting to the person who's contemplating their own navel, but for me? Meh. Impossible to convince a narcissist that other people don't care, though, if you tell them that it goes through the NPD filter and comes out on the other end as "you hate me with a burning passion and want me to die? that's what you said, right?"

Dude, no, you're just boring me.

LangCleg · 22/05/2018 16:10

It ruins otherwise interesting threads for me.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/05/2018 16:24

I wish the board was still FWR, tbh 'Feminism and Women's Rights.'

Any 'feminism' which undermines women's rights isn't feminism. And (imo, others may well disagree) there may be women's rights issues which women who are uninterested in 'feminism' (though they can't actually be disinterested parties whether they like it or not) may want to discuss.

Can you not just participate in the ongoing conversation, MadBad?

Why must you come and shout My nappy's dirty, somebody change it NOW! on every single thread? There are perfectly good discussions going on and you could try some topical input for once? Thanks in advance.

spontaneousgiventime · 22/05/2018 16:54

MadBadDaddy Blowing raspberries to posters on an adult message board? Really? That's you in my ignore bin, I like to discuss things with other adult women not tantruming toddlers.

neonyellowshoes · 22/05/2018 17:11

The OP was spot on.

Flip the thread and it's turned into a spat about who was mean.

@GaspingShark this is not a feminist board, it's the TERF board. There may be genuine issues with TRA, I don't actually care, but the TERF response is massively disproportionate.

Imagine if all this fury could be ploughed into something that would actually benefit lots of women...

ToeToToe · 22/05/2018 17:15

It's so very tiresome - Mad isn't the first, won't be the last. OP isn't the first, won't be the last.

It was posters like the OP who got the board changed from Feminism/Women's Rights to "Feminism Chat" - because the words women's rights were just too off-putting or something. And Dittany was just too scary for them, so Dittany had to go too Hmm

SomeDyke · 22/05/2018 17:16

And yet again, feminists being told what they should and shouldn't talk about...........................

TERFs are feminists too, just the cunty, sweary, shouty and unherdable sort! Smile

( the usage of cunty on these boards has been a great boon to me personally I might add!).

DarthArts · 22/05/2018 17:18

I haven't read the thread - yes a MN crime....

That said, no I haven't been active on here about the 8th.

In all honesty it's because I do t think there is anything to debate - and that's what I come here for when I feel I need my views sharpened/tempered by some very insightful posters.

It's a fucking shameful piece of legislation.

I don't need to discuss or debate it.

What I have been however is active about it on other social media and pulling no punches.

So in the response to the OP I'd say there are probably other women like me who haven't engaged/talked about this on MN - not because we don't care, but because there's nothing to say other than to get behind the bigger SM campaigns to repeal the 8th and demonstrate a weight of opinion that way.

neonyellowshoes · 22/05/2018 17:20

It's not feminism though, that would be for women. This is anti TRA.

Anti TRA when they are being anti-women is both (for women) and not (anti trans)

Nothing gets radical feminists talking more, than being told to shut up about something Wink

The activists in masks punching/intimidating women does little to shut us up either.

My god, the language in your posts, Damnthat. It's unbelievable. "Just stop and be nice, and then all will be well..."

No, I don't think we will "just stop" while transactivists re-define women, and police our language. We're not in 1984 yet.

spontaneousgiventime · 22/05/2018 17:44

Damnthatonestakentryanother2 Oh wouldn't you just love that? Women shutting up I mean? How does NO sound? We will not shut up, not today, tomorrow, next week, next month, next year, years ahead. Get used to it, you are not getting our spaces.

Damnthatonestakentryanother2 · 22/05/2018 17:47

Ereshkigal
I generally appreciate people who make good faith arguments, even if I disagree. Dishonest goady people, not so much.
A case of "opposites attract", then Grin

SomeDyke · 22/05/2018 17:49

"It's very easy: just stop. That's all you need to do............"

The activists in masks punching/intimidating women does little to shut us up either. Yes! There you go being misleading again, NATWALT again and again and again (and repeat until they shut up).

Nope. It is intriguing to see how many times the same nonsense comes from many different angles. We're not doing it right, we should just focus on other stuff (and anyway all our fault for spreading misinformation and lies -- and probably being hysterical as well). Oh, and a side-swipe that could be taken to mean if naughty wrong-sort-of feminists didn't get distracted by this nonsense, then other (more important) stuff could have been sorted, or at least closer to being sorted.................

Still nope. Not fooled.

Damnthatonestakentryanother2 · 22/05/2018 17:57

smithsinarazz
Really, the trans issue (like other feminist issues) should be being discussed, in public, without anyone being threatened or insulted, and without anyone being expected to subscribe to anyone else's dogma.
That would be nice. But their seem tone precious few of us on mums net who think that way, vastly outnumbered by those who think that myths become fact if you shout them often enough, and that a "discussion" means chanting "penis" "penis" when someone else is taking and smirking at each other like a bunch of five year-olds

SardineReturns · 22/05/2018 17:59

I am bored of GFs.

The people raising this give no fucks about women or girls, here or abroad.

Many of the posters here have been here for years, we know our business, and we know a cunt when we see one. And that fact applies for a variety of situations right now, as it goes.

Do these people give one single shit about abortion rights globally, about the imprisonment, death. About the physical and psychological damage. About the impact on children.

I'll let you all come to your own conclusions.

AssassinatedBeauty · 22/05/2018 18:02

I'm still waiting for all those who've complained about the content here to start threads on topics they feel are important and contribute on existing threads they feel are important. There's no point arguing with all these "you're all horrible bigots and bad feminists" tantrummers.

Rufustheyawningreindeer · 22/05/2018 18:03
