They’re hosting a Women Making History March and guess who’s hosting it?

mobile.twitter.com/shonfaye/status/993446574498963457

Shon, who gloatingly told a woman recently to ‘enjoy your erasure’.

Shon discusses the reactions to being compere of the Amnesty event during the Novara Media interview.
Discussed on this thread:

Article in Gay Times, 'Shon Faye silences transphobic critics with empowering speech at Women Making History event'

(extract)
"Despite controversy surrounding her involvement as host for the Amnesty event, Shon Faye has silenced her critics, and paid tribute to trans people around the world who have lost their lives.
Opening her speech, Faye made reference to the abuse that she had suffered for agreeing to host the event – there was even a transphobic change.org petition calling on her removal which garnered over 2,000 signatures." continues...

Shon hasn’t silenced us. We are still here. We are not going away. We will continue to call out Shon’s misogyny and unsuitability to speak on behalf of women.

Govt. report discussed in Independent:
"Hundreds of vulnerable women, predominantly from Eastern Europe, being supplied by trafficking gangs into residential properties to be sexually exploited by British men, report finds"

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/sex-trafficking-industrial-scale-prostitution-pop-up-brothels-appg-mps-a8360756.html

"Sex trafficking is taking place on an “industrial scale” across England and Wales as the government’s strategy for tackling the issue fails to deliver, new research claims.

MPs called for the criminalisation of paying for sex after research found so-called “pop-up brothels” – premises rented for short periods of time to sexually exploit women – were widespread, with hundreds of vulnerable women, predominantly from Eastern Europe, being supplied by trafficking gangs into residential properties in order to be sexually exploited by British men.

The inquiry by the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Prostitution and the Global Sex Trade found the practice was being enabled by “prostitution procurement websites” such as Adultwork, and driven by a minority of UK men who pay for sex...." (continues)

I hate to brake this to you but since half of you are law abiding citizens, or at least I hope you are

The law is simple it states that trans woman are woman and that's why there is the gender recognition act which most of you probably have not heard of.

She has just as much right as any of you to represent any organisation or cause

Terfing · 21/05/2018 11:24

Hi @huffsoy, welcome to Mumsnet Smile

Most people here are aware of the GRA and other laws in this area. However some of us have various concerns about the negative effects of self-id.

Moreover, Shon specifically has made numerous misogynistic comments that many users here have taken offense to. I'm sure they will be easy to find with a quick Google search. This was why many people were against Shon speaking at Amnesty, not because they're a trans women.

OrchidInTheSun · 21/05/2018 11:27

Do point to the law which says that men without a GRC are women @huffsoy. Thanks so much

beenandgoneandbackagain · 21/05/2018 11:28

Great "empowering speech". Lots of reference to the "women making history" . Did SF actually mention any actual bog standard, no pre-fix needed women, or just transwomen?

Doesn't this speech highlight the erasure of women that we are all concerned with?

Roomba · 21/05/2018 11:28

That's my direct debit cancelled immediately.

huffsoy · 21/05/2018 11:52

Do point to the proof that the woman concerned doesn't hold a grc

huffsoy · 21/05/2018 11:57

@terfing yes and some of you use this as an excuse to bring up the fact that she's trans and make it a trans issue

Terfing · 21/05/2018 12:18

@huffsoy I think most people on these boards would not object to a trans women speaking at Amnesty. Trans people face unfair discrimination and harassment worldwide. This needs to be stopped and feminists are shoulder-to-shoulder with trans women on this matter.

However, having a known misogynist (Shon) was not acceptable. It is Shon's misogyny that is offensive, not the fact that Shon is a trans women. Smile

Thread discussing some of the legal basis that I think Shon also raised in the Novaro Media interview:

huffsoy · 21/05/2018 12:52

@terfing I find this difficult to believe I've read posts from users who claim trans woman are a danger on mumsnet and there are a bunch of ladies on Twitter saying they left mumsnet because they didn't like trans people using the forum

EmpressOfSpartacus · 21/05/2018 12:54

I think a transwoman speaking for transpeople at Amnesty would be absolutely fine and ought to happen.

A transwoman speaking for women is another matter.

R0wantrees · 21/05/2018 12:59

One of the great features of this site is that you can read through threads in their entirety and so can understand both the context and views of posters.
I recommend having a read.

NobodyToVoteForNow · 21/05/2018 13:03

I really think we need to do a FOI request on their funding.

I'd guess more than half their regular donors are female. How is it that they can now afford to lose our support? Where exactly is the money coming from to replace what they stand to lose?

NobodyToVoteForNow · 21/05/2018 13:05

huff some transwomen are a danger to women. Or are you denying they offend at the same rates as men?

And the women who quit mumsnet did so because biological facts were being deleted as 'hate speech'

R0wantrees · 21/05/2018 13:13

some transwomen are a danger to women

transcrimeuk.com
"Documenting crimes committed by transgender individuals in the UK"

James Kirkup:
(extract)
"Transgender people suffer prejudice and harm. Like any other group, they include good people and bad, saints and sinners, those who want to shout from the rooftops about their identity and those who just want to live their lives and be left alone. As a group, they deserve much better from the law, from society, from politics.

But “better” should not come at the expense of others who also deserve an improved deal. Nor should it be based on anything less than a full, open and factual debate: laws and conventions arising from a chilled, restricted political and public conversation will be walls built on sand.

And right now, the debate about gender and the law is not full and open, not least because in their rush to speak for the rights and interests of one minority group, politicians, charities, bits of the media and other parts of civil society are ignoring the interests of another."

That’s hilarious. Not been on mumsnet much have you? The GRA is talked about all the time. The law is not “that simple” either as there are still single sex exemptions that can be invoked, and which do not include trans women.

LangCleg · 21/05/2018 14:09

I don't know what some people intend to achieve here. I often, on this very forum, say I would prefer not to have to throw old school transsexuals under the bus because the AGP/ladypenis brigade have got hold of the narrative and the political pull. But then along come ill-informed, rude, aggressive new posters telling me what I think and getting it all wrong... and, what do you know, suddenly all my sympathy withers away and I'm less inclined to worry about buses.

TransplantsArePlants · 21/05/2018 15:34

I am Very Happy for a transwoman to speak about transwomen

Not happy for SF to speak about woman.

(Would love to know how many transwomen are happy for SF to speak about them)
