How would you actually implement bathrooms separated by sex?

I'm actually curious about this. I'm defining sex as the most common combinations of chromosomes and gonads.

How would you enforce that only people with a particular combination uses a particular bathroom? In the case of intersex people, or transgender people who pass well?

@blackandredarrow Could it not be so that all people who make a nuisance are asked to leave?

  1. What constitutes a "nuisance" depends, believe it or not, on the sex of the people involved. A woman stripping her trousers off to wash blood (or coffee, or chocolate) out of them isn't a nuisance in an women-only loo, but would be in a mixed loo. A man stripping his trousers off to wash them wouldn't be a nuisance in a men-only loo, but would be outright threatening to some women and therefore not appropriate in a mixed loo. We've had similar discussions re defining "indecent exposure" in an open-plan changing room that isn't sex-segregated.

  2. This doesn't keep women and girls safe. Many public loos are unattended so there isn't someone who a woman can call on to help her evict a man who is causing a problem. Single-sex loos prevent a man from starting to cause a problem, allowing women to relax and use those loos freely. Mixed-sex loos force women to be vigilant and then have to navigate dealing with an infractor after he's already begun his infraction. Toronto University tried mixed bathrooms and had to back out after women were filmed and this incident alone tells us that mixed-sex hygiene facilities are a terrible idea.

What an odd article

Melinda Scott, dean of students at University College, told campus newspaper The Varsity that some washrooms in the college's residences will now be separated by gender for "those who identify as men and those who identify as women."

Separating by 'gender' to those who 'identify as men/women' is still being bloody unisex. To make them not neutral, they would need to revert to separating by SEX. Jesus christ. If its down to those who 'identify as women' then the voyeur can just claim he identifies as a woman and offend again. Which is part of the issue with this unisex by stealth bollocks

In light of these concerns the uni returned to single sex but not for long:

The legislature made it a crime to discriminate against men wanking or filming in the unisex lavatories.
