Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

How would you actually implement bathrooms separated by sex?

I'm actually curious about this. I'm defining sex as the most common combinations of chromosomes and gonads.

How would you enforce that only people with a particular combination uses a particular bathroom? In the case of intersex people, or transgender people who pass well?

If they pass well I probably wouldn't be able to tell.

I'm a woman and I've used the men's, by the way.

blackandredarrow · 08/05/2018 22:09

Every one of them, but I don't see any answering my original question to my satisfaction

I meant there is more than just gonads and chromosomes

"what if a transgender person passes well? how would you be able to tell?"

A minority pass in photos but RL is a different matter. Women have evolved over millennia through brutal natural selection to be able to tell the sex of strangers. The lives of our female ancestors often literally depended on this ability.

How many transwomen did you mistake for women after spending a short amount of time in their company?

Opheliah · 08/05/2018 22:11

Well we're mumsnetters yknow not actual law enforcers

blackandredarrow · 08/05/2018 22:11

Of course, but what would you consider a transgender woman and what a bloke?

"I mean there is more than just gonads and chromosomes"

A dictionary would help with your doubts and confusion re the definition of the two sexes.

blackandredarrow · 08/05/2018 22:12

I'm asking how would you strictly enforce it

OP posts:
ReluctantCamper · 08/05/2018 22:12

you've had loads of answers blackandredarrow, basically saying that no-one is interested in rigidly enforcing who can use the loos, but them being nominally single sex allows people who are making a nuisance of themselves to be challenged

Confused
blackandredarrow · 08/05/2018 22:13

Are they? As you say, trans women are using the women's

OP posts:
Tinkletinklelittlebat · 08/05/2018 22:13

Here have a fish.

blackandredarrow · 08/05/2018 22:15

Does that not result in passing (something over which people has a limited control) being the basis for segregation?

OP posts:
ReluctantCamper · 08/05/2018 22:15

I'm out.

it's like trying to have a conversation with AI

blackandredarrow · 08/05/2018 22:16

I wouldn't know, because if they passed as women, how would I know they are trans?

OP posts:
CoteDAzur · 08/05/2018 22:17

"what would you consider a transgender woman and what a bloke?"

And again, I recommend you get a dictionary.

We don't actually have to guess at words' meanings, you know.

Opheliah · 08/05/2018 22:17

Does that not result in passing (something over which people has a limited control) being the basis for segregation?

Passing when it comes to loos probably yeah. But not sex segregation in general.

blackandredarrow · 08/05/2018 22:18

And I am thankful for all the answers.
If being a nuisance is the criteria, what does sex have to do with anything? Could it not be so that all people who make a nuisance are asked to leave?

I know, sorry, I'm trying to be strict with definitions and following them until the last consequence

OP posts:
blackandredarrow · 08/05/2018 22:20

I'm asking about how would you visually differentiate one from another

OP posts:
Thetartofasgard · 08/05/2018 22:20

Of course, but what would you consider a transgender woman and what a bloke?

A bloke has a penis.

A transgender woman has either had her penis removed (and gets to use the women’s toilets) or still has a penis (and should use the mens.
Simple.

blackandredarrow · 08/05/2018 22:21

Isn't that morally questionable?

OP posts:
Opheliah · 08/05/2018 22:21

Can you tell one from another? Have you met humans?

blackandredarrow · 08/05/2018 22:22

I didn't say it needed to be. I am asking whether it is viable at all

OP posts:
blackandredarrow · 08/05/2018 22:22

By your definition, how would you differentiate those? Would you look at prople's genitals?
