Transgender campaigners and organisations have released an open letter to Channel 4 criticising Genderquake, a season of programmes touted as an exploration of the gender debate, as "counterproductive".
Signees are particularly concerned about Genderquake: The Debate, a studio discussion hosted by Cathy Newman that promises to look at what gender means in 2018. It will discuss topics including: 'what defines our gender identity', 'how that affects our rights', 'should it be easier to change gender' and 'does gender matter'.

The letter, published by indy100 in full below, argues that the debate will give legitimacy to transphobia, prejudice and the notion that trans identities are up for discussion. This concern is presumably stoked by the presence of Australian-born academic and writer Germaine Greer on the panel, who has previously said transgender women "can't be women". continues...

"The letter is published in full below and has been signed by dozens of prominent transgender and non-binary activists and campaigners - and allies - alike, including Fox Fisher, Owl, Stephanie Hirst, Juno Roche, Travis Alabanza, Kate Llewellyn, Jack Monroe and India Willoughby."

I have returned to watching bleak dystopian sci-fi on Netflix. It’s way more cheering than the last hour’s chuff on C4.

Theblueplanet · 08/05/2018 23:06

That was a waste of time. Could have had some really interesting contributions from that particular audience too. Disappointing.

Lemonjello · 08/05/2018 23:07

^what was that weird head girl telling off that cathy newman gave the audience? fuck me

has she never watched any questions? you need a dimbleby for this job.^

Bizarre. Trying to assert some kind of control I guess. Unsuccessfully, as she couldn’t even get her words out properly.

wielblad · 08/05/2018 23:07

It might be worthwhile to complain to Channel 4, since one can bet that following the letter, others might do so but about the existence of any program at all and on having GG and SD at all.

bialystockandbloom · 08/05/2018 23:07

Well hello you lot, I've never commented on this board before (though have lurked and learned), but this show has peak-peak-peak-transed me. Topped off by only giving the "summing up" to CJ and MB only. Women know your place. Fuck this shit. I've joined your ranks.

Elendon · 08/05/2018 23:07

Can you imagine a diner party with Jenner and Bergdoff?

I'd be afraid to eat with the wrong cutlery.

DuddlePluck · 08/05/2018 23:07

Am fucking furious - that wasn't a respectful debate, it was a set-up from start to finish. Absolutely disgusting.

Wave777 · 08/05/2018 23:07

Piss poor

Badly managed and far too much Caitlyn Jenner who is none too bright and very very boring.

rememberthetime · 08/05/2018 23:07

Greer is the same age as my mother (if she was alive) and for her to have such progressive feminist views is a miracle given her upbringing. I'm also from her part of the world and I know what she means about the culture of masculinity. She deserves huge respect for opening up people's eyes to the destructive nature of gender stereotypes.
Women her age had more to overcome than any PF the other women/men on that panel and they completely failed to acknowledge it.

Cwenthryth · 08/05/2018 23:08

I expect channel 4’s complaints dept will be busy tomorrow.

Do they have any obligation to fair representation, impartiality etc like the BBC do?

That was an hour of my life wasted. Oh apart from the trailer for the new series of Humans looks good. Excited for that.

I’m not surprised TRAs don’t want debate. They have nothing to say and no calm, rational arguments or rebuttals. They have shouting, and deferential hosts.

^This^

I don't understand why they even thought for a minute that CJ would have anything worthwhile to contribute. Boring, boring, boring (can I say ?)
MB behaves as though they think they're in charge of and more important than everyone.
I'm a bit in love with Sarah Ditum though.

The host was shit.

I spotted the Man Friday t-shirt Smile

CircleSquareCircleSquare · 08/05/2018 23:09

I’d like to know how much they paid Jenner to be on the show because they constantly seemed to defer to her, in order to get their money’s worth.

Very poorly conducted show, badly hosted, terribly conducted and all round terrible television.

CecilyNeville · 08/05/2018 23:09

A five minute slot on BBC news of Bindel v Fae (or any other pairing) covers more ground, with more considered argument, than the entire hour of that. Wish I hadn't bothered.

HelenaDove · 08/05/2018 23:09

I didnt watch Genderquake but im watching the debate now on Channel 4 + 1 as ive seen some comments on my Twitter feed.

Wave777 · 08/05/2018 23:09

I wonder how they could tell which women were the ones who should get to talk most? Hmm

Paleninteresting · 08/05/2018 23:10

GG won’t recall being on the show quoted because she wasn’t on it. She gave a quote to a researcher because she was travelling when the show was on.

LikeAZombie · 08/05/2018 23:10

Monroe didn't come off too bright either with that briefly mix up at the end. Too busy listening out for offence and made up words to follow a basic sentence. And ash must be the most annoying woman on earth.
I'm fucking pissed off

Invalid · 08/05/2018 23:10

Lefthanddown · 08/05/2018 23:10

That was shit overall, the sodding ad breaks were annoying.

I know GG is 80, I've enjoyed her books and her wit, but perhaps it's time for her to retire.

Sarah was great, but disappointing she wasn't able to finish most of her points.

I think if audience members were shouting 'penis' out, it doesn't help the GC argument overall.

thalia2018 · 08/05/2018 23:11

Yes what exactly was the point of the audience if they weren’t allowed to ask questions or give their views? Must have been very frustrating to be there. Either engage with an audience like Question Time, or just have a group of panellists for a discussion without an audience.

SarahCarer · 08/05/2018 23:11

Those born male got by far the most air time. The heckling fools did none of us any favours. GG was shown utter contempt and disrespect while CJ was treated as the elder statesman. Sarah made some excellent points but couldn't hide her rage while the celebs looked so composed and also couldn't resist arguing back too quickly for TV

I don’t think the C4 format is right for a debate. The ad breaks (as well as Cathy Newman’s rubbish hosting) killed it off. Would have been better to pre-record and have some audience participation. God it’s made me so fucking angry. I can’t believe this is what passes for debate on this incredibly important issue. Toilets, boring anecdotes from CJ, TOTAL BULLSHIT quoting of the Stonewall report, and Munroe fucking Bergdorf saying the life expectancy of a trans woman is 35 completely unchallenged, awful attacking of GG and ridiculous bias from Cathy Newman. Just why fucking bother. Urgh.
