LGBT+LD @ lgbtlb
Public statement by the LGBT+ Liberal Democrats executive regarding the resignation of our honorary president, Lord Paddick:
1/4
The LGBT+ Liberal Democrats executive has reluctantly accepted the resignation of Lord Paddick as our honorary president.
2/4
Lord Paddick previously tended his resignation, which we declined when he made certain undertakings about his meeting with a group set up to oppose transgender equality legislation.
3/4
We regret that those undertakings have not been honoured. Subsequently Lord Paddick tended his resignation again, which has been accepted.
4/4

Lord Paddick has form for resigning

Lord Paddick quits as Liberal Democrat Home Affairs spokespeson following furore over leader Tim Farron's views on gay sex
The former Lib Dem London Mayoral candidate said the decision had been made 'weeks ago.'

He quit as LD home affairs spokesperson as he was uncomfortable with Tim Farron's views on gay marriage. The resignation prompted Farron's ultimately. He is an important and influential figure in the party.

I'm not quite sure what's going on here or why. It sounds like the LGBT LD didn't want him to resign. It sounds like its connected to trans issues and Paddick's position. The timing is interesting.

I don't want to read too much into this. But its suggesting a split in opinion and approach. (I don't believe this shows that Paddick is pro-women's rights. I suspect he is more pro-due process, at least at this stage). And that its damaging to the executive as a whole.

When is the meeting with Paddick scheduled for? It could be very interesting now. Looks like Paddick really is sticking his neck out.

Oh and Brian tweeted his support for Sarah btw.

cistersofterfy · 04/05/2018 13:30

Sarah Brown didn't get elected.

I am a Lib Dem.

Conflicted as I want the party to do well as long as I still think it reflects my values but I was directly accused on twitter of all sorts by the Lib Dem LGBT account and then entered into a debate with Zoe O'Connell on Facebook when I expressed my views on an enquiry from a constituent concerned about self-ID that there are valid concerns to listen to without dismissing it all as transphobia.

Not being open to debate and discussion isn't liberal. I see many of my party colleagues on social media trotting out transwomen are women as if that's all the response that's required. I don't think it is.

There have been a number of women who are members of the LibDems who have described feeling bullied / silenced by influential members in ways that are neither liberal or democratic.

I can't imagine anyone else being taken seriously and being supported to stand for election under similar circumstances.

Well there is Heather Peto for Labour... who said they were elected they would "work when I can and staff would fill in the holes when I can't”."

It seems very far from how women are treated in politics.

Sarah Brown didn't get elected.

Good.

That the LibDems were prepared to select Brown for candidacy is grim though.

DarthArts · 04/05/2018 14:13

Oh yes - I'd forgotten that little gem from HP.

R0wantrees · 04/05/2018 14:18

The volume of 'abusive' tweets are being used by some to obscure and deny the concerns of women about the conflicting rights.

Responses to twitter accounts such as Lily Madigan & the LibDeb LGBT+ etc are likely separated from their context.

cistersofterfy · 05/05/2018 21:02

The Labour Councillor that beat SB in the election is getting a lot of grief on Twitter, largely led by Lily Madigan. She's shared a few things - the letter to the guardian, a WPUK post and one about Transgendertrend.

cistersofterfy · 06/05/2018 16:37

Ann Sinnott has just tweeted a twitter reply to the accusations of transphobia that she has been getting, including threats of complaints to Labour.

She's advocating for an open debate where everyone is represented.

excellent, hopefully one with both respect and nuance...

I've started a new thread. I thought it was worthy of attention.

Still really appreciating that BP is openly listening to both sides when most have not yet been brave enough to do that. Thanks Brian.
