MN no longer safe for gender critical women

TheXXFactor · 18/04/2018 22:20

I am reluctantly deleting my MN account, in light of the data breach: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3225517-The-MNHQ-Moderation-team

It's a fantastic site, Justine has shown herself to be a staunch defender of women and I'm enormously grateful to MNetters for all your support and humour over the years. So this isn't a flounce, more a reluctant slink out of the door of a party while the gin is still flowing but...

..this data breach could cost me my job and my personal safety. I have no way of knowing whether Emma has stolen my data and MN don't seem interested in finding out. They are not even reporting the breach to the ICO.

I hate doing this. I hate that trans extremists will see this as a victory. But I cannot trust MN to keep my data safe, or even to take proper steps to remedy a breach. I sincerely hope that they will review their approach, so I can come back. Until they do, the anonymity of usernames means nothing and every gender critical woman on here is at risk.

So long and thanks for all the Pom bears Bear Sad

I would imagine that was the purpose to posting screenshots on twitter. To get the women who refuse to submit, to git.

Winewinewinegin · 18/04/2018 22:25

Just what a TRA who wanted to delete all the awareness raising in mumsnet would say, right down to the thread title.

Not saying this is your motivation as I don't know you and sorry to see you go.

But think we should be aware that some people would love this site shut down and history deleted.

Winewinewinegin · 18/04/2018 22:25

Cross post Bewildered.

Winewinewinegin · 18/04/2018 22:26

Bewilderness. Doh!

UpstartCrow · 18/04/2018 22:27

Sorry to see you go, but its got so nasty for women I do understand Flowers

EasterRobin · 18/04/2018 22:33

If you're worried, you can sign up again straight away with false details and a non-identifying email address. MNHQ only have the details you give them (and your IP address, which by itself isn't enough to identify you).

EasterRobin · 18/04/2018 22:34

Hopefully we will see you again shortly with a brand new shiny username (although I do really like your current one!)

TripleRainbow · 18/04/2018 22:35

You have to do what feels right for you. I really hope you have a change of heart and stay though. In all this insanity I really appreciate everyone's thoughtful contributions on these threads.

We're all in the same boat. I'm not impressed with MNHQ's response so far either. I'm going to stick around though. MN isn't perfect but the fact they deal with things calmly when faced with challenges is why we're still able to discuss issues affecting women and girls without being silenced.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 18/04/2018 22:36

Reregister in another name.

TBH, this might all be a good thing. People put far too much personal data online.

I have very few accounts with my personal data. I make it up. You shouldn't give personal data out unless you really have to. I don't think MN even asks for it anymore - they used to ask for a postcode, but they don't now. Thye don't actually need it, it's not as though they will be direct mailing people.

The IP data could be an issue. But it makes the case for using a VPN. I use one sometimes but this has persuaded me of dedicated use

Don't let the fuckers limit your life or your choices. Don't let them limit your freedom of speech. There are ways to protect yourself.

Don't let them shut you up. Fuck them

Winewinewinegin · 18/04/2018 22:38

Yes do come back with minimal data and a separate email address if you feel you can.

Either way: Wine

thebewilderness · 18/04/2018 22:39

It is easy for me to say because there is noting they can do to me they have not tried to do the past fifteen years.

Rufustheconstantreindeer · 18/04/2018 22:41

Ive changed some details on my account page

Is that the same thing as re registering?

HairyBallTheorem · 18/04/2018 22:44

I tried that, Rufus but it seems that I can't change the e-mail account I'm registered under, so I think I may have to go down the de-reg and re-reg route (not disappearing completely, because I want to keep talking about feminism!)

Ekphrasis · 18/04/2018 22:47

Mn could back date and name change all your previous posts under this name.

It might not make sense in a thread though if someone then quotes you are replies to you and uses the original name.

Winewinewinegin · 18/04/2018 22:49

@HairyBallTheorum you can definitely change the email account you are registered under.

Would be such a shame to lose all your posts if there was a way not to that you feel ok with.

HairyBallTheorem · 18/04/2018 22:52

Does de-regging lose all your previous posts? I thought that only happened if you specifically asked them to be removed?

I don't mind the posts being up there - I think I'm reasonably careful not to post identifying details, and I try always to think "would I say this to someone's face?" before I post. But I do mind my email and real name being on MN's books and would like that to vanish, because I'm not sure I buy the "she's said she's very sorry and won't do anything else" line. (In fact, I'm absolutely damn sure I don't buy that line).

Winewinewinegin · 18/04/2018 22:55

Ah, good question Hairy not sure.

Ooooh i did hairy i did!!!

Complete technophobe

Dh had a right cobb on with me Grin

Winewinewinegin · 18/04/2018 22:57

MN might edit data in the circumstances to make it non identifying. You can check what they have in account details if you haven't already.

AngryAttackKittens · 18/04/2018 22:57

You can change your email address, you just need to enter your password to make the change. I'd suggest changing both for those who're staying.

Rufustheconstantreindeer · 18/04/2018 22:58

Your posts stay

I name change the middle bit (so constant) in this case

But I rarely say anything contentious

Didnt help the poster thats being misquoted all over the shop Sad

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 18/04/2018 22:59

Hairy
I have deregged a few times. Yoyr previous posts stand but you will have to namechange obv. If you are a long term account holder you will lose the ability to have 1000 posts in one page (I wish I'd known I was giving that up, let me tell you!), instead it's a 100 max.

Otherwise, it's no issue. They ask for far less information than they used to. Make it up. They don't sell your data so it really isn't significant

MipMipMip · 18/04/2018 23:01

We can report this directly to the information commission. They really should be involved.

On a related matter, anyone know what happened with the TEA infiltrated site that was mentioned a little while ago, possibly crowdfunder? I believe some people planned to report that.

Winewinewinegin · 18/04/2018 23:02

TEA infiltrated? What was that?
