MN no longer safe for gender critical women

I am reluctantly deleting my MN account, in light of the data breach: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/womens_rights/3225517-The-MNHQ-Moderation-team

It's a fantastic site, Justine has shown herself to be a staunch defender of women and I'm enormously grateful to MNetters for all your support and humour over the years. So this isn't a flounce, more a reluctant slink out of the door of a party while the gin is still flowing but...

..this data breach could cost me my job and my personal safety. I have no way of knowing whether Emma has stolen my data and MN don't seem interested in finding out. They are not even reporting the breach to the ICO.

I hate doing this. I hate that trans extremists will see this as a victory. But I cannot trust MN to keep my data safe, or even to take proper steps to remedy a breach. I sincerely hope that they will review their approach, so I can come back. Until they do, the anonymity of usernames means nothing and every gender critical woman on here is at risk.

So long and thanks for all the Pom bears Bear Sad

Sorry, I was being all brave thinking about risks such as losing work by businesses and professional reputations being targeted etc. Totally different situation for anyone risking their anonymity and personal safety, I didn't mean to minimise that, sorry Flowers.

I have no worries about being outed btw. All my friends and family know my views and everyone at the law firm I work at are firm believers in biology and reality. If anyone tried to attack me in any way I'd have the full force of the law behind me. The senior partner especially is ruthless in court.

Yarnswift · 19/04/2018 09:00

Gosh don’t apologise, I think you’re all extremely brave!

That’s what makes me so mad about this breach - there are women whose children could be put at risk, who have abusive spouses trying to find them. Who have posted about intimate issues like health or addiction or any number of things.

I hope MNHQ get proper advice on how to deal with this and they absolutely do need to report to the ICO. It is a criminal matter of some gravity - it’s more severe than ‘just’ leaking identities of financial loss because the data has the potential to cause physical harm - it falls under a different category. They also need advice on how to comply with ‘minimum amount need’ data collection and visibility so that no one who doesn’t need it gets access to personal data.

It’s a real can of worms. The intern who leaked this will have damaged their entire future career- I work with clinical and patient data and if I’d stolen data like this I would literally never work in the field again - it’s a gross breach of trust. They could also (and I think should also) face criminal charges because of the nature of the information accessed and the potential for harm to women and children. I doubt she fully realised what she did but it’s going to have a serious impact on her life. A very foolish thing to do.

missbonita · 19/04/2018 09:07

Just one of the things that saddens me about this is that a foolish young woman, who has been utterly manipulated, has now lost her career. For what? To impress a bunch of aggressive people who don't give a shit about her.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 19/04/2018 09:21

Oh come on Miss, she isn't stupid by any stretch of the imagination.

Certainly devoid of any critical thinking skills though. What is it with Universities these days? Logic was one of the first classes I did.

But she's a big girl and she made her own decisions to call women 'transphobic' scum and take action on them.

Accountability is required

Yarnswift · 19/04/2018 09:27

She is accountable. She’s shown that she has poor critical thinking, poor impulse control and cannot be trusted with data. I wouldnt hire anyone who demonstrated those traits and if she’d done what she has done in my industry she would be pursued to the full extent of the law.
It was not a one off action, she seems to imply she’d been collecting data for a while.
She will likely never work in digital content again. She may face criminal charges. She probably wrecked her future career path.
I’m afraid I dont feel sorry for her at all. I feel sorry for the women who are now worried abusive exes may find them, or who may lose their jobs from being found to have gender critical views.

I'm staying.
I'm a biologist, I'm employed by my company because I am a biologist which I will point out to them should this ever come up. They can't (and they wouldn't because they don't either) expect me to believe that humans aren't a dimorphic species.

MargeH · 19/04/2018 09:45

Sorry, but I'm not buying into 'the poor thing, she was manipulated' excuses.

Here she is, telling the world how her personal details were posted online....and then posts an image with them just in case we missed them first time round.

thetab.com/uk/leeds/2016/02/04/roosh-vs-followers-posted-details-online-i-criticised-22209

Maybe she sees it a badge of honour.....y'know, being a right-on journalist 'n all that.

SecretsRSecrets · 19/04/2018 18:34

I'd like to point out something I noticed to anyone who may have missed it. This is one of the reasons I love MN...

I'll point out the opposite first: The TRAs are online gleeful and promising all sorts of evils deeds on the MN posters, and thrilled that they may have acquired personal details in order to do this. Absolutely no thought to any vulnerable women and children.

Here's what cheers me: One of the posters who was exposed was pro-TRA. And the women of MN are worried about her being threatened or harmed in anyway.

Massive difference between the two groups right there, and I know which I admire.
